Liverpool have reportedly made an approach to sign Aston Villa winger Stewart Downing.

The England international has impressed for Villa this season and has been an ever-present for the club in the Premier League.

He is Villa's top scorer with five goals in the league and is understood to have been the subject of an enquiry from Sunderland last week.

The 26-year-old is now being targeted by Liverpool as new manager Kenny Dalglish seeks to inject some fresh blood into his squad.

Downing cost Villa £12million from Middlesbrough 18 months ago and he has made 64 appearances after injury delayed the start of his career in the Midlands.

Villa boss Gerard Houllier revealed last month that he was confident that he would be able to retain the services of Downing during the January transfer window.

However, Villa's pursuit of Sunderland striker Darren Bent could prompt the club to consider letting Downing move on.

An offer of £18million is reported to have been made for Bent and cashing in on Downing would provide some of the funds to bring in his fellow England international.

Hmm...He'd be an upgrade on Jovanovic, Babel etc. but that isn't saying much at all. Hope it happens and Liverpool pay a lot of money for him too.

All they need now is Shaun Wright Phillips and they wont be far from the worst squad ever.

Please please God let this happen. He's not good enough for any team who have champions league aspirations. Let them waste a chunk of their transfer budget on him. Mind you, its probably just BS.

Decent player, would give them a lot more natural width seeing as i don't think they've actually got a proper left winger.

Pretty much this.

Far from top notch but better than what we currently have and provides natural width as you say.

He went through a few seasons of being absolute shite at Boro, but at Villa he's come good. This season he's done well for them

He would be a significant upgrade but (presumably) would be overpriced.

The kind of buy that would just continue Liverpool's vicious circle.

Sounds like a player they don't necessarily want, but do need to improve them.

Downing would add more width to their left side. He's fairly quick and he's not afraid to shoot/cross with either foot as well. I think it would be a step in the right direction.

Yep.

The long and short of it for me.

It really depends on NESV (or whatever its called). It seems an expensive way of improving yourself to me - given they'll have to give Downing a raise etc.

We have to improve on what we currently have while also being realistic about we can attract and who's within budget.

Downing would probably tick all 3 boxes.

Torres must be delighted. From playing with the likes of Xavi Iniesta Villa and co to...Maxi, Downing, Kuyt and Spearing.

He'd be a decent stop gap signing. Definitely better than the rubbish you have on the wings right now. Means the end of Babel surely though?

  imagine the conversation:

Kenny: Look Fernando we are really serious about challenging for trophies again so we are going to bring in Stewart Downing!

Torres: Sorry who?

Kenny/NESV: Erm he plays for Villa? Flopped massively for England but honestly he is really really good!

Torres: Better than Messi/Cole?

Kenny: Erm yeh possibly, on his day. Well he's left footed anyway...

Downing is currently better than Cole who is definitely better than Messi. The bottom 10 must be terrified after hearing of this deal

If true, yeah.

Talk of Babel going to Ajax with Suarez coming in the other direction. Would be pleased to get shot of Babel should that be the case. Not really sure about Suarez, whether he'd come and, if he did, whether he'd be any good. Leave that to folk who know more. about the chap..

TBF its not like world class players are be lining up to sign at Liverpool. He'd be a solid sort of buy. But nothing spectacular and probably overpriced.

Suarez seems a good striker but I don't think you'll should buy a striker who's good enough to be a starter considering Torres plays far better when alone upfront.

That's exactly my view. We have far more pressing concerns than a striker. Probably nothing in it anyway.

They could play him wide and then up front when Torres gets injured.

He's a Gareth Barry or James Milner type of player. Not extremely shit but not good at the same time.Liverpool have plenty of players like that, it would be money well wasted again

Disagree.

He's better than any left winger they currently have.

Assuming Dalglish will stick with his preferred 4-4-2 Downing would improve their team.

Yes it would improve the team but to the extent they need?

Surely they don't think they are in danger of relegation?

So unless they are planning on securing their mid-table position I don't see the point.
