Spain international Ivan de la Pena is set to file bankruptcy proceedings against Lazio, claiming the Rome club owe him almost £3m in wages. De la Pena's contract with Lazio ended this summer and he has decided to pursue a personal claim against the club in order to get the money he is owed in unpaid wages.
Lazio appear to be in dire financial trouble and de la Pena is expected to make matters worse when he presents his case for Lazio to be declared bankrupt on Monday evening.
The Rome giants have already had their Serie A registration turned down this summer, with the Italian League worried about their financial state.
President Sergio Cragnotti must convince the League this week that the club can operate this season, despite reportedly also owing unpaid wages to former managers Alberto Zaccheroni and Dino Zoff, as well as players Marcelo Salas, Karel Poborsky and de la Pena. These unpaid salaries are said to amount to around £6m.
The club also has general debts of approximately £17m. Cragnotti has refused to admit he is worried about the possible relegation of the club to Serie B should they be unable to prove their financial stability for the new season, but the Italian press report that it may force them to sell prize asset Alessandro Nesta to Inter Milan in a bid to clear their debts.
The club also owe Manchester United £10.5m from the £16.5m purchase of Jaap Stam in 2001. They are thought to be keen to remove that debt by striking a deal with United which would either see Hernan Crespo, or Claudio Lopez and Juan Pablo Sorin, move to Old Trafford in place of the cash owed.
