Disaster strikes England

England captain Michael Vaughan's chances of playing in the first Test against Pakistan are rated as slim after he suffered a knee injury.

Vaughan was batting with Andrew Strauss against Pakistan A when he twisted his right knee as he completed a run and had to retire hurt without scoring.

He was taken to hospital for a scan and will have treatment.

England's chief medical officer Peter Gregory said: "He's got to be a doubt for the first Test."

The injury happened just five days before England's first Test against Pakistan in Multan on Saturday.

Dr Gregory said Vaughan's injury was complicated further because he had had surgery on the same knee before and he also missed the opening Test against New Zealand 18 months ago when he was hit in the nets.

"It's still very sore. We will need 24 or 48 hours to see how he pulls up clinically and responds to the treatment, as well as to take into account what we find on those scans," said Gregory.

But he warned Vaughan's tour could be over if he needs more surgery on his knee.

"He has a history of cartilage damage, and it would be very likely this is too. "If there is a tear it would be pretty bad for him. Usually with tears you would need an operation."

The way we're batting it won't make that much difference.................

England finally hit batting form

Tour match, Lahore, day two (stumps): England 126 & 256; Pakistan A 138 & 31-1

Paul Collingwood scored a rapid 60 in Lahore

Pakistan A closed on 31-1 chasing 245 to beat England in the final warm-up for the tourists before the first Test.

England had their best batting day on tour but there were concerns for Michael Vaughan, who retired hurt for nought after twisting his knee.

Paul Collingwood, Andrew Strauss and Ashley Giles all scored useful runs as England were all out for 256.

However Kevin Pietersen missed out. The South African-born batsman has compiled just 16 runs in four innings on tour.

The day began with Pakistan resuming their first innings on 127-8, and England needed just 23 balls to polish off the tail with just 11 runs added.

Importantly, Steve Harmison claimed his first wickets in Pakistan as he tempted Mohammad Asif to edge to Marcus Trescothick at slip and trapped last man Mohammad Khalil lbw.

England were effectively 10-3 in the early stages of their second innnings however, after Asif had removed Marcus Trescothick and added the wicket of Pietersen once Vaughan had limped off the field injured.

Trescothick fell for one before Kevin Pietersen went for a golden duck, both falling lbw.

But Strauss and Collingwood then put together a 113-run stand for the third wicket as England led by 244.

Both men had luck on their side early on - Strauss was dropped in the gully early on and Collingwood was caught by a fielder who stepped over the rope at long leg.

Finally, Strauss was caught behind for 56 when he edged a cut shot off Shahid Nazir for 56.

Then the more attack-minded Collingwood, apparently having done enough to cement a Test place, was out for 61 - both men falling with the score on 123.

Andrew Flintoff, in his second innings on tour and batting at number six, hit an aggressive 28 which included two sixes.

But he gave leg-break bowler Mansoor Amjad his second wicket of the session when caught at deep backward-square leg - a carbon copy of Collingwood's demise.

There were more confidence-boosting runs from the lower order.

Ashley Giles was last man out for 49 and Geraint Jones added 30 as Amjad finished with 5-97.

Just four overs were possible in Pakistan A's second innings before stumps and the hosts refused to be cowed as Matthew Hoggard's two overs cost 22. But one ball from him produced a wicket as Taufeeq Umar was caught behind.

Both have been crap pitches, you can see that by the low scores all round.

England have delayed an announcement on whether they need to replace captain Michael Vaughan on the Pakistan tour.

Vaughan twisted his knee on Monday in the match against Pakistan A and his chances of playing in the first Test, starting on Saturday, were rated slim.

But coach Duncan Fletcher said: "We are still not sure about Vaughan.

"We have sent his reports by e-mail to medical experts in England and, hopefully, we should get a firm answer by tonight on his condition."

Fletcher said the injury was similar to the one which ruled him out of the first Test against New Zealand in the summer of 2004.

If Vaughan does not make it, Marcus Trescothick would take over as skipper for the match, starting on Saturday.

Owais Shah and Robert Key have been mentioned as potential replacements but they too have been ruled out.

"Key has had a shoulder operation and Shah has a knee injury which didn't look too serious at first but a closer look has shown it is a far more serious," Fletcher added.

England's chief medical officer Dr Peter Gregory said Vaughan's injury was complicated further because he had undergone surgery on the same knee in 2002.

And he warned Vaughan's tour could be over if he needs more surgery on his knee.

"He has a history of cartilage damage, and it would be very likely this is too," said Gregory.

"If there is a tear it would be pretty bad for him. Usually with tears you would need an operation. "We have asked for the scan report done last year and will compare both the scans."

Alex Loudon should be the best deputy if the need arises, he seemed very classy on the rare occasions I saw him play.

Maybe I'm DJS and have stolen Slabber's ID.

Let's test that theory then.

Is Harry Kewell one of the most underrated football players in Britain?

Is Gbril Cisse undoubtedly class?

Do Mancs only make fun of Peter Crouch because they are jealous they don't have such a potent goal scoring threat?

a) Yes and but for his injuries we'd all see that.
b) Undoubtedly. He's only going to get better as he recovers from his broken leg.
c) Yes and because you're bitter because we won the CL.

Kinell DJS. You know stealing ids is a serious banning offense, don't you?

They'll probably close down Slabs account as well.

Thieving bindipper scum.

England lost by 6 wickets. Not the best start to the series but I wouldnt look into it too much.

People were moaning that we were under prepared for South Africa last winter and we won, and that we were off form for the Aussies, and we had them too.

We will miss Vaughan's captaincy if he's out, if not his batting.

Tresco's a bit rubbish at it and it will probably ruin his batting too.

From the sounds of it even though Vaughan will probably miss the first test, it looks like he will be coming along anyway which should help Trescothick out a bit.

I think the quartet of Flintoff, Pieterson, Harmison, and on this particular tour Giles perform the rest of the team will fit around them. I like you dont think much of Tresco's captaincy credentials.

Vaughan should be knighted. He's done more for English cricket in his little finger than SAF.

True, SAF has done very little for cricket.

SAF should be knighted again.

England captain Michael Vaughan will stay with the squad but remains "very doubtful" for the first Test against Pakistan on Saturday.

Essex youngster Alastair Cook has been called up as cover for Vaughan and will fly to Pakistan later this week.

Vaughan suffered a knee injury on Monday and has been advised to rest by medical staff.

"Michael will remain with the squad and the medical team will monitor his progress," said an England statement.

"Michael's orthopaedic specialist in the UK has viewed scans of his knee taken in Pakistan and the advice we have received is that he should rest the injury.

"He is rated very doubtful for the first Test in Multan and his availability for the second and third Test matches will be reassessed in due course."

England have decided to call up 20-year-old Cook as cover for Vaughan and also Andrew Strauss, who is expected to miss the third Test to be with his wife who is due to give birth to their first child.

Cook, a left-hander, is the 2005 Young Cricketer of the Year and averaged 48 for Essex last season and can open the batting or bat at number three.

He scored a double hundred against Australia in the summer and is a former England under-19 captain.

Chairman of selectors David Graveney said: "Alastair had an outstanding season for Essex last summer, is a member of our National Academy squad this winter and we believe he has the potential to succeed at international level."

If Vaughan is unfit for the first Test, Marcus Trescothick will deputise as skipper.

The England and Wales Cricket Board also announced spinner Shaun Udal, who is in the Test squad, will remain with England for the one-day series and Worcestershire pace bowler Kabir Ali has been called up too. Graveney added: "Kabir Ali's bowling should be well-suited to the conditions we will encounter in Pakistan and his selection for this tour will give him another opportunity to stake his claim for a regular place in the side."

Marcus Trescothick will captain England in the first Test against Pakistan in Multan on Saturday after Michael Vaughan was ruled out by injury.

Vaughan twisted his right knee on Monday playing in a warm-up game.

Trescothick said losing Vaughan was a "major blow" but was pleased to be leading his country, saying "it is always a great honour".

"We can take strength that we have played some outstanding cricket over the past 18 months," he added.

"We are all up for the challenge on Saturday."

Ian Bell, who missed the defeat to Pakistan A in Lahore, is set to come back into the team for Multan.

o.gif
"When your captain goes down it is not a great thing, but we have a good squad and we hope all the guys who are not involved stay ready in case they are needed," said Bell.

"We have enjoyed every minute of the tour so far - when you are in this part of the world you have to adapt very quickly."

Although scans on Vaughan's injury have not pinpointed obvious serious damage, he had surgery on his right knee in 2002 and missed a Test two years later with a problem in the same joint.

An England spokesman said: "Trescothick will continue to lead the side if Vaughan is unavailable for any remaining matches on the tour.

"Vaughan will continue to receive treatment and a further update will be issued in due course."

o.gif
Trescothick stepped in to captain England successfully for the first Test against New Zealand at Lord's last year when Vaughan was injured.

"I have fond memories of doing the job before and I am happy to take on the responsibility again," said Trescothick.

He has also led the team in five one-day internationals, England winning three of them.

There will be a heavy police presence during England's stay in Multan with 3,000 officers on hand to provide security. District police officer Munir Ahmed Chishtie said: "The security will be tight round the clock."

They are talking about Bell coming in for Vaughan, but I thought Bell would have made the team anyway.

So what do you think the England XI will be for the first test?

I think they were either going to play two spinners and Collingwood.
