Udinese defender Cristian Zapata has revealed that he is close to joining Liverpool.

The Colombian international is currently away with his national side preparing for the Copa America in Argentina but has told a South American radio station that he is likely to leave Serie A for Liverpool.

“I have some options,” Zapata told Colombian radio station La FM.

“Bayern Munich and Liverpool are two real possibilities for me. We are pretty close to those clubs and those are my options and I hope they come true.

“I haven’t heard much from Arsenal, that possibility seems to be at a standstill at the moment. The Liverpool option is the most serious one.”

“I have gained experience, but the time has come for me to make the jump to a big team.”

The 24-year-old joined Udinese in 2005 and two years remaining on his contract with the Serie A club.

As he is a versatile defender who can play anywhere across the backline, he is believed to be Liverpool’s second defensive target after missing out on Phil Jones to Manchester United.

Shame players seem to be jumping ship on Udinese as soon as they achieve something. I'd have thought Zapata would rather give them one more season to at least advertise his services on the highest level.

More importantly, is he good?

Haven't seen him for club, but for country he's pretty good. Fast and strong going forward, defensively suspect, but so are most LBs these days. He's a solid improvement on what they already have, but not a scary option.

Still, Liverpool continue to improve :(

I don't watch many Colombia games but I doubt he's their left back (mainly because I think they play three at the back) and he's definitely not a natural left back, nor a natural right back (although I'm sure he'll play there when needed to, a much better option than Skrtel or Carragher). He's very gifted physically and not at all lacking technically but he still acts like a bit of a fruitloop sometimes, concentration-wise and in terms of decision-making he's definitely erratic. That said, when he's at the races he can be really dominant.

He's awesome on fifa.

uhh... so yeah, content...

Can't really fault liverpools strategy so far, I'm annoyingly impressed with the side theyre starting to build. I mean, theyve got a way to go to get back to where they were but with these kind of buys they probably wont descend into obscurity

The last few games I've watched it was a straight 4-4-2 and he was free to bomb forward. But with Yepes still captain, I've seen him favored more as a side back recently...

I don't think he is better then Agger or Skertel, if they sign him it doesn't change nothing.
