Veron out, Diop in anyone?

great player, big strong skilful and heart of a lion. this is the way forward for us. 23 years old and hungry to prove himself.
i know there are a lot of names banded around the forum but IMHO this is the best def mid option for the shirts.
Duff-Diop-Cisse would inject some real threat.

Found this at the team's site:

Gud news for Fergie
Chelsea have scrapped contract talks with Eidur Gudjohnsen - opening the way for a £10million move to Manchester United. Old Trafford boss Alex Ferguson is poised to pounce for the Iceland striker when the transfer window opens in January. And Chelsea have also put pay negotiations with defender John Terry on hold while they battle debts of around £80m. Fergie is ready with an offer that both club and player will find impossible to refuse. Gudjohnsen, 24, and Terry, 21, are seen by Blues fans as the bedrock of a future team that can challenge United, Arsenal and Liverpool for the Premiership title and success in Europe.

Don't know how true this is, but these two and Diop, could make things really interesting. There might be some players not only on their way out of Old Trafford, but fighting for a place on the team.

If we get Gudjohnsen, that could mean no Cisse next summer. I'd rather have Cisse than Gudjohnsen.

I see your point Spacey, but really wonder if West Ham is willing to give up a player many believe to be the heart of the team in many ways. Cisse is young ( 25) and would fit in nicely at United but I don't know that West Ham is going to get rid of anybody. Their situation at the bottom of the table is rather precarious at this point and I would think that Roeder wants to hold on to as many players as he can to try to improve their position.

U are classic!!!!!!

The only player United material is Di Canio or a more mature/experienced Joe cole.

imo Gudjohnsen would be a great buy
but not Diop ,he isnt anywere near united/world class

he's who fergie was on about "getting more physical" .

Di Canio is in his thirties, and while he is really a good player, United does not need aging players. It will help in the short term, but in the long run, it is not a good thing. Older players get injured ( as do younger players) but they take longer to heal. Look at Seaman for Arsenal. He has been out with a groin injury. He may be back now, but those kind of injuries you do not rush back from, especially the older players.

if united really want a good , hard player they should get either van bommel or tomassi .both young and imo world class

and expensive

Diop seems to be the physical kind of player Fergie referred to of his rivals. But if he came in do you play him with Keane, playing two defensive central midfield players (e.g. Viera & Silva). Does he jump the queue ahead of Butt and Scholes? He could well be one for the future. I think he's touting for a move quicker than Fergie may want him.

He's 23. If Fergie expects him to wait past the summber of 2003 he'd better change his expectations!

He is very similar to Vieira, and remember we were ready to bring Vieira to OT two summers ago for big bucks, presumebly to partner him with Keane(what a combo). Though a CM would have to move on for Diop to join. Also in light of SAF's comments about the arse and dippers building powerful squads(particularly with african players), and with the player and his agent claimimg United's interest, this story looks more credible.

Tomassi is 28. We have somebody the same age who does the same job just as good to him in Butt IMO.

Fergie (if he wants Diop) should just go and get him first chance, if he waits around and says "Ah we will wait and see what happens" I bet Diop will end up at some other big club. The secret is make your mind up and do it.

While I think Diop would be a good signing for the future I don't think the position he plays in is where United need new blood. I would love to see signings that would act as alternatives to Giggs and Beckham. I'd love to see another winger (left or right sided) who had the effect Kanchelskis did. Does anybody miss those rapid direct counter-attacks from one end to the other that we were famous for. The Arse seem to have carried on that mantle.

Yeah. Especially since when SAF revealed he wanted to bring ZZ to OT when he 1st stepped into the international scene, but he didn't ...Of cos comparing Diop to ZZ is kinda silly now, but who noes? ;)

Like LenSharky mentioned ... big strong and skillful ... and he's not just a bull but an intelligent one - he has shown his goal scoring instinct in WC too ...

My only worry is hiw work-permit if he does come by ... He need to play 75% of the games to make sure he's eligible to have his work permit renew ... I really wonder at such position as CM, he will get that 75% ...

Strange though - how come Fortune don't have such problem ? ... is he carrying some sort of special passport that England recognised ( since he's from SA ) hence a different story here ?
