Villarreal insist no offers have been received from Premier League clubs for goalkeeper Diego Lopez.

The Spanish shot-stopper has impressed for Villarreal this season since joining the club from Real Madrid last summer.

Lopez had come through the ranks at the Bernabeu, but moved on in search of regular first-team football.

His performances this term have seen scouts flocking to El Madrigal, with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur rumoured to have watched Lopez in action.

But Villarreal are in no mood to sell the 26-year-old and have slapped a mammoth price tag on the keeper.

Not obsessed

"Diego Lopez has a value in the market of 24million euros (£18.85m) and this sum is the only one that we would study for the player's possible sale," a club spokesman told skysports.com.

"We have not received a formal offer for the kid, but the presence of foreign scouts to watch our players is not rare."

Lopez, who is under contract with Villarreal until 2011, is not expecting to be distracted by the rumours surrounding his future.

He said: "My challenge is to show a good level every day and I am not obsessed with the rumours in the papers."

I don't think we'll go for a 'keeper this summer. Sir seems to think Foster is the second coming.

Edwin will be 38 next year.. I would like to see Buffon play for us, he has got another 6 years of good football left, and Juventus aren't the team they used to be..

You´re right. Edwin will be 38 next year and when he´ll retires we´ll have Foster as nr. 1 and Kuszczak nr. 2

no need to have 3 international 'keepers, 2 is enough and some youngster as third choice 'keeper, no need for Buffon.

What makes you so sure Foster is cabable of beeing a number 1 keeper at a club that is expected to win the Premier League + FA cup and challenge the Champions League? I hope he is, don't get me wrong, but one of the top clubs of the world like us should have one of the best keepers in the world.Remember our experiments with Howard, and Carroll?

Foster has all the capabilities of a top class goalkeeper, he deserves a shot before we start talking about signing other 'keepers. Especially someone like Buffon who would cost a lot of money.

btw United aren´t expected to win the Premier League and FA cup, they are expected to *challenge* for both but any United fan that expects United to win the Premier League and FA cup EVERY season is a spoiled cnut.

You will never know until you give him a chance. Every great keeper starts off young and inexperienced. After a period of time they gain the respect and confidence they need to be considered world class.

You can kiss any idea of Buffon coming here goodbye! He stuck with Juve through all the match fixing demotion shit and has just signed a contract extension that included a hefty raise, not only that but its going to keep him there until his 36th birthday from what I've understood.

can't see us spending that kind of money on a keeper. or even getting a keep in that would expect to be our number 1 with the situation we are in. VDS is still a very good goalkeeper and will be number one for the rest of this season and possibly the start of next season. i think foster will be given an extended run in the first team next season. i think he has all the necessary attributes to be a fantastic goalkeeper for us. with pig as a backup for both and when VDS eventually decides to call it a day i can see heaton becoming third choice. this story is nothing more than paper talk in my opinion, i think we are well stocked in the keeping department at the moment and for a few years to come, providing all goes to plan.

From The Independent:

With Edwin van der Sar entering his last season as United's goalkeeper, neither Ben Foster (whose rise to the England squad is more indicative of a lack of competition than true quality), nor Tomasz Kuszczak are ready to take the No 1 jersey. Hence United's apparent interest in Villareal keeper Diego Lopez. The man himself is calm over the rumours, perhaps worried more by the apparent bid from Tottenham.

He might be on his way if Villarreal don't grab a CL spot.

Id take him, theres a strong chance Kuszczak will be sold. A couple of german sides were interested a while back I think

The rumours about him are popping up again.. I hope to hell they are false looking at his recent streak of errors which can be seen at 2.25 & 3.10

He's an excellent keeper making a few uncharacteristic mistakes.

Was judged to be the best keeper in Spain last season, and the second best keeper all around Europe, by many.

If you'd watched him regularly you'd not be saying you hope we don't get him.

Youtube videos and all that...

Wasn't Casillas the best keeper last season in spain?

Second best in europe? meaning he is best behind who?

There are around 10 goalkeepers better than him in europe.

Nope, he had a big dip in form for the first and last month for Madrid last season so Lopez was better overall.

Julio Cesar was the best.

Go on then, name these 10 keepers.

Cesar, Buffon, VDS, Casillas, Reina, Cech, Given, James, Kameni, Lloris.

He is probably in the level of the last 4 that i have chosen. But, he is good enough for us probably after VDS leaves but that doesn't mean he is anywhere near the best in Europe.

I only hope we do not get him because I have seen him make quite a few errors myself when I used to be able to watch full La Liga matches weekly (which did include last season) Anyway I also hope we do not get him because I have faith in Foster.. Who like Lopez is still young and will make mistakes.. I am not saying he is not a good keeper.. But as we all know experience is the key when it comes to Gk's..

He's been better than Cech and Buffon ever since he moved to Villareal, and he's been a level above the last 4.

You don't judge players by ability, you judge them by their performances over a reasonable period of time, like 3 years. He's not been far off any of those keepers over that period of time, at all.

Palop's better than at least two of them as well. Same for Frey, who's outperformed Buffon in the league for a while now in general.

No chance. Casillas was horse until November. His wall positioning for Del Piero's free-kick here was representative of his early-season form.

Somewhat of a role reversal this season however. With Casillas putting in some stellar performances (e.g v Sevilla) and Lopez looking a bit ropey.

We all love Buffon - he was essentially the best goalkeeper for several years - but his last couple of seasons have been patchy and he's been outperformed in Serie A most notably by Julio Cesar. I understand that he too (Buffon) seems to be getting back on his game this year.

He had another impressive game today for Villarreal against Valencia. He's big, he's reliable, he's experienced and he makes the saves that win you games. Has to be the favourite to replace VDS if we look to buy.

What he like mentally? Could he hack it at United ?

He's experienced, probably the best of the goalkeepers in Spain at dealing with crosses and he used to be number 2 to Casillas at Real Madrid so has some form of big club experience unlike other candidates. He's consistant too... Not really sure what else we could ask of a potential first team goalkeeper. Until they turn up at the club and play in front of our fans, we just wont know their mentality. All you can do is look at the fact he's played lots of games in la liga, the champions league and played for a big club in Madrid and hope that these factors mean that he has nerves of steel between our posts if we sign him.

Been thinking a bigger club should snap him up for a while now, great keeper.

Nothing posted about this lad for a long time, twitter rumours that we have signed him, how has form been of late, what is his contract situation?

Edit: apparently deffo a wind up.

apparently it s a joke by one of his team mates

Capdevilla tweeted: "Diego, recently signed by Manchester United, good luck friend, the best is leaving."

It was a stag do prank. He has since apologised hasn't he?

Not very funny either. My mate got tied to a lampost in the buff. Much more appropriate.
