Diego Forlan and his sister
(You might already know about Diego helping his sister out but I just came across this on the net, and thought it sums the guy up really)
As Diego Forlan pulled on the United shirt for the first time he was fulfilling a promise he made to his sister who lay, in hospital, close to death 10 years ago. He vowed to become a soccer star in order to support her. Alejandra was almost killed on a rain soaked coastal road in Uruguay when the car in which she was travelling crashed into a palm tree; her boyfriend was killed instantly. Her 12 year old brother,
Diego, wept silently at her bedside and made a vow - to become an international and pay for all the medical expenses she would ever need. When he first turned professional he was on £35 per week. So desperate were the family that businessman Samuel Liberman invested £150,000 in him in 1998. Diego received £1m from the transfer which was immediately transfered to his fathers account to pay for his sisters treatment and round the clock care.
In these days of footballers fighting in night clubs and paying £75 for a hankie this is news to lighten the hearts of football fans everywhere. Here we have a footballer driven, not by riches, but by a burning desire to help his sister. He is paying for 1st class tickets for all his family to come see him play at Old Trafford.
He is also masterminding the conversion of his Manchester house to accomodate his sisters wheelchair. He phones her every single day. His sister says that he has made her the proudest sister in the world. His family maintained a constant vigil at the hospital where she spent 5 months on a respirator in intensive care.
Diego visited the hospital every single day. He would read to her and tell her jokes, "suddenly my younger brother was the big brother - looking after me always". In these days of heartlessness and greed, it was great to read this.
Since arriving at Old Trafford Diego has been lynched by the media and had jokes made about him, But he has gone on to score 9 goals for Manchester United in the 02/03 Premiership season starting most games as a substitute he also went with Uruguay to the World Cup and scored one of the goals of the tournament.
At 23 Diego still has a lot to learn and could turn out to be a very good buy for Manchester United
i like him even more now
