Sevilla have agreed to let forward Diego Capel join Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon.

Capel burst into Sevilla's first team during the 2007/08 season but the Spain Under-21 international slipped behind Jesus Navas and Diego Perotti in the pecking order last season.

Sporting launched a summer move for the 23-year-old winger and he is now set to sign a five-year contract with the club, with Sevilla receiving a fee of €3.5 million.

"Capel was an important football player for Sevilla but a deal has been reached," said coach Marcelino Garcia Toral.
Dos Santos interest

Capel's exit could now pave the way for the Sevilla boss to make an approach for Tottenham's Giovani Dos Santos.

The Mexico international has also attracted interest from Valencia and Udinese but Sevilla are keen to steal a march on their transfer rivals.

Although the 22-year-old has failed to establish himself at Tottenham since joining them from Barcelona in 2008, he impressed on loan at Racing Santander last ter

He had massive hype surrounding him for a while. I remember fees of £15m being mentioned. I would have thought he'd have looked to move to somewhere like England if he was leaving.

He was very good in his debut season, looked likely to be better than Navas or even Reyes. Every time I've seen him since he's been disappointing.

Overhyped and he bought into it. His contract was coming into its final years and he had excessive demands for Sevilla so it dragged on and on. He went from a first team starter to an impact sub and had a season with 0 assists.

He's still fast and he still looks exciting when he carries the ball forward and takes on a fullback. But I think he's only now coming to terms with the fact he's not as good as people told him he was.

Am I right in thinking Spurs bid something like £15m for him a few years back?

He's like the current version of Joaquin but with even more diving. Biggest diving bastard in Sevilla. He'll fit right in where he's going (yes I'm having a go at the Portuguese league).

It's like Lee Sharpe, didn't improve as expected and a younger and better (Perroti in this case) stepped up and took over.

To be fair toward Lee, he had that little problem of having to compete with the best winger of his generation for a first team place. Even at age 38 and out of his original position Mr Ryan Giggs is our main creative spark in CM. Imagine him in his prime.

And to be fair towards Diego, he has struggled to compete with the emergence of Perotti and the role of Navas on the other flank. Capel has stagnated and hasn't added anything new to his game in the last couple of seasons.

i think thats unfair on Lee Sharpe....

he was a very good player for us but was always going to be second choice to Giggs

I was gutted to see Sharpe go - I think he made a mistake in leaving United

Tbf he's only 23, has 2 caps under his belt, is recently a U-21 European Champion and isn't taking a big step down in his career. Sporting isn't a bad team. Sevilla aren't much better although the league they play in is.

Sharpe had a much bigger impact with United than Diego Capel has ever had. He was PFA young player of the year in 90/91 and destroying the best defences in the country and our most exciting player in the European and domestic cup runs of that season.

He was also pretty good for a few years after that despite being inferior to Giggs and was a very good player in the success of the 94 side. His return from injury was one of the factors which made the 92/93 title side very good as he gave us balance and unleashed Giggs from the right when Kanchelskis was struggling with form and injury. Eric's signing is often cited as the making of that side but Sharpe's return to the side and McClair giving Ince a reliable midfield partner were also important parts of the shaping of that side and season. He was also on fire for the first half of 93/94 and had Giggs out of the side for abit with Kanchelskis also on fire.

It all fell apart when he went to Leeds despite not being quite as good in his last two seasons for United.

Sharpe always seemed like the sort who loved the life football could give him rather than football itself. His career would have been much better if he didn't drink that much.

Capel's not very good. Run with ball head down on left then turn back and pass it back to his full-back, basically the left wing Milan Baros
