in the 70s & 80s? Cos' the way people are talking, you'd think we have some divine right to win trophies. Well, for those who can...think back to the grey days of the 70s & 80s...not a championship in sight, just the odd FA cup to celebrate......and didn't we used to celebrate in those days. Whilst success over the last decade has spoilt all United fans, remember this........Failure makes the next success twice as sweet.

I was just turned 4 in 1980 when me big brother bullied me into supporting United. :D
Thank you big brother :D

Them were the days allright, a top 4 finish and a good run in the cups was a dream season, and if we beat the Pool nothing else mattered either.
I agree with you about the latter day fans being too greedy and seemingly not being able to grasp the fact that were not just handed the premiership title every yr. Were one of about five clubs who has a good chance of winning it every yr. If we fail 3 times in ten yrs or so i cant see how the bastards can complain.

Those were the days my friend.Never be the same again though :(

I was as gutted as the next guy about the Boro result but when you've been through relegation and the like, it aint that bad really. These days, it's hard for the new breed of United fans to contemplate failure but, Newsfalsh, you'll get over it!

I've mainly stayed off the boards this weekend because tbh, it's like reading about kids who've had their sweets stolen. You lot, with exceptions, really don't get what footy is all about and some of you equate a United loss with crap players and coaching rather than just 'shit happening'.

It looks as if the arse or the scum will win the PL now, so what? We can't win it every year. I still think we can do it but it's all about poo and arse fecking up now. Tbh, we haven't played the type of footy consistantly that is required to be considered champions; arse have, and poo have played a tactical game that has stifled a lot of creative and attacking teams so more power to them too.

There's a good chance that we can win the CL as everyone left starts afresh with the same record W-0 L-0 D-0, of course I think Real are the fav's but hey, if we get to the final against them, or anybody for that matter, it's one game - 90 minutes (+ stoppages eh Bayern? ;) ) anything can happen.

Keep your chins up, we are 1 point off the top of the PL and in the qf's of the CL!!! It aint that bad!

i hate our glory support..its like they've never seen united lose the title.. hell, they probably haven't! we've won the title three years on the trot since 99!

Don't want to go back to them days. I think I'll dump the club for the time bein until happy days return again....fecking United, what have they done fer us lately? Nowt......   ;)

Ofcourse, it was much better in the good, old days; during the war...

My father started to support United in 1956. I grew up with that view. I am only 34 myself, so I cannot claim to have vitnessed the 60's and 70's versions of the team very much, though I did become a supporter in 1978. Living in Norway it is not natural to visit Manchester 2 times a month to cheer the lads on. And I guess not many of you in England visit Norway to see their clubs very much either. I don't like the discriminating view so-called 'hard-core' supporters have on other supporters. Manchester United wouldn't have been the club you watch so very closely so very often, if it hadn't been for the enormous interest English football generates across the British borders. Manchester United is an international club. And it has been so since the days of 'the Busby Babes'. And if it hadn't been, then the club wouldn't have the cash to dish out for players like e.g. Nistelroy. A club need all the supporters it can get. And even though some supporters are not as permanent as others, it is nonsense to talk about who's needed, and who's not. We are United, aren't we?

Another thing is the debate about how spoiled now-a-days supporters are vs. the older supporters. Ofcourse it is so. Ofcourse the children of the rich are more accustomed to success, than maybe their parents were. But then again, I do believe the fans of the 60's, and maybe even the 50's also could be rather craving for victory too, versus the fans that originated from earlier years. I am sure the fans from before the war complained abt. how spoiled the fans from the 50's and 60's were. After all; Sir Busby did achieve something too, didn't he?

And I am pretty sure the fans from the 70's pretty much were at times frustrated at the lack of success, and wished back to the days of Matt Busby. I cannot believe they all just ignored their past, that they didn't wanted their team to once again stand on the top both in Europe and in good, old England? And even the 80's, which was rather frustrating too (due to all the 2. and 3. places in the home league) in despite of some cup-triumphs, I am sure many of you wanted United to become as good as Liverpool was.

Yes, it is correct that we should not forget that United cannot go on winning the Premier League every year. And we cannot demand that we shall win the throne of Europe again, or else we are poor. But it is in our hearts. We DO believe we are the best club in the world. We want that. It is the core essence of our dreams. There are no club ever that can be greater than our club. That's why we cope so poorly with losses. That's why we always are fighting 'till the end. We don't want to die, ever. That's our favourite theater, and we play it over and over again. In 'the Theater of Dreams'.

And nothing can ever change that. Than God.

...oups...a typerrr...

The last sentence should have been:

THANK GOD.

There you go.

Shall I reveal how old you are? ;)

I first went to Old Trafford in 1971......

We got relegated a few years later... :( ...

I never missed one home game from the mid seventies to the late eighties, grim days...

But now things are looking a bit better... :) ...

My story is quiet unique, I think.

My family was over visiting relatives (mother's side) in St Alban's when I was 7. During the visit, we were in a sport shop and my father asked me what t-shirt I wanted. I ofcourse chose the best looking crest. A big Manchester United crest covering a large portion of the centre of the shirt. I still have that crest, though the t-shirt has long gone.

In Canada, during the 70's we'd only ever get to watch the FA Cup finals on TV. I saw the Cup victory over Liverpool and defeat to Arsenal. We got to watch highlites of the PL matches and some matches during the 80's.

So my first favourite players were, Steve Coppell, Lou Macari, Martin Buchan and Gordon McQueen. My all-time favourite is Bryan Robson by miles. I still think he is the best player I've seen in a United shirt.

My first big hate for Liverpool was during the milk cup final when Grobbellar hacked McQueen down and got nothing for it. I hated the bastards that day. I still wanted to see them beat the italians though.

The last 10 years have been fantastic. Hey, the last 25 years have been great. Even when United doesn't win, they still still know the name oof the game is good football. We've had that most of the time. Only Dave Sexton played a negatively. Alot of people slag Atkinson, but I'm of the opinion he brought back the excitment to United's game. SAF is in a class by himself.

I was a travelling supporter in the 80s - BC (b4 children).

Pulled into a services once at the same time as a coach load of Chelsea fans - should have seen the panic on peoples faces. We ended up all chatting together and having pictures taken!

Came home from an Everton game with no front window, after representatives of the charming and friendly people of Liverpool stood on the M/way bridge chucking bricks off it. It was a bit like being in a submarine, with the Supporters Club sec. shouting "Dive, dive" to us, and we all sat in plane-type crash positions, and one bloke who had travelled to the pick-up point by motor-bike, sat there in his crash-helmet.

Fun times.

Once in the seventies I was going to an away game at QPR and we stopped at the services, Tottenham were playing at Bolton that day and their fans were at the services...

I wish I could recount a story like Livvie's but I went to the toilet and as I was leaving this great big neanthertal with Tottenham scarves hanging off his body beat the crap out of me...

His mate weighed in most heroically as well, these "fans" were as ever giving the reputation of football a good name...

Anyway we drew and Tottenham lost 1-0, everyone made a point of telling me the score from Burnden Park...

Coming home it was a running battle at every service station between United fans and Tottenham fans, I'm glad that those days have gone and I hope that recent signs aren't signs of those days returning...

Well said Roxy, anyone remember the days such as 2-0 away at Notts County, paying on the turnstiles at Wembley to see big Norm beat the Toffee's. 0-0 at home vs Videoton then 0-1 away, christ the list is endless but what fun we had.

Bring back the Scoreboard paddock, United Road and Stretford paddock. We talk about the support now, but it was nothing, nothing on the 70's...! Remember Norwich, Cardiff, Blackpool, Sheff Wednesday away. This was support of a club who played the game how it should be played ATTACK,ATTACK,ATTACK-ATTACK, ATTACK. Watched by supporters who loved the club not PLC or shoppers. I don't honestly care how many trophies we win so long as the team keep playing the way we were brought up to expect. I'll go for a 4-3 any day and you know what you can do with a 1-0 bore......! As Sir Matt said "Play the game with a smile on your sleeve" Pity nobody ever said that to Anelka.....!

what rubbish. i've been going to Old Trafford and supporting united for 26 years.

I will be totally gutted if we don't win this season. Worst of all is that we will be throwing it away, handing our title to one of two teams who shouldn't even be within touching distance of us at this stage of the season.

Agreed, mate. Your spot on about playing it the way it should be played. That's another reason why it will be so galling to lose to liverpool. They don't even deserve to wear their own red shirts, let alone take the title from a proper-playing attacking side. boring fecks.

One good thing might come out of failure this season.............the daytrippers might feck off to anfield or Highbury.

the hair was longer and the shorts shorter. mid-table much of the time. spoiled now if MU lose a few. 70's - 80's - why i hate pool! (AND FOREST).

I though the caf was great last November when the sunshine boys stopped posting.
It brought back menories of the 80's. :D

Big Ron was a fekin genius;with his football savvy
the eighties should have been a golden era for the club, however maybe it was a blessing in disguise, because it heralded the arrival of Sir Alex Ferguson himself, the man with all the answers!

It's ok if we dont win this year.
The only fear i have is not winning anything in the next few years. let's hope not...

every club has it's own "good days"
we owned in the 60's
Pooers in the late 70's and early 80's
then we again in the 90's
i hope 2002 is not the end of the "good days"

At last! One of the best threads I've read since coming into the caf. You're all bang on! We follow United wherever they go because THERE'S ONLY ONE UNITED!!!

Some people need to cheer up. Of course it's gutting not to win, it always has been. We just don't do so much of it these days. There's always room for criticism of players, management, coaching etc although we shouldn't lose sight of the fact that we love football all the more when it's exciting. The finish to this season could be a classic and we're not out of it yet. But, what the hell, then we've got the World Cup and then next season. Isn't life great?
