Specifically, derailing of MY threads. A recent example can be found here. This topic was meant to discuss comments made by Roy Keane about young, flashy footballers but within 20 minutes of the thread being active, it had turned into something else.
It's degeneration can be traced to the moment Van Illiterater stuck his oar in and proceeded to ruin the thread not just by his use of excruciatingly bad grammar, prose, spelling, and every other facet of the English language, but his inflammatory and extraneous content too.

From that point, the thread devolved into a spat between a variety of members and the original point of the topic was long lost.

Shouldn't the moderator's intervene and make sure threads stay true to the topic, not to mention clamp down on irreverent members?

Mate, this forum is a conversational mechanism, not a debating society!

I asked you a specific question about Beckham's media tendencies. You didn't answer it. It's your fault for leaving your thread unattended. :smirk:

Of course, you could always stop posting as you're getting quite boring. :boring:

Give it whatever fancy term you want, the point still stands. We're here to discuss football, something which isn't possible in the Football Forum thanks to certain people with a vendetta. They should be dealt with and leave the members who want to talk footie in peace. It's not much to ask for, is it?

As opposed to you who's ALWAYS been a boring bastard? And had the thread not been ruined, I might have gotten round to your query.

I reckon Re_Deus makes a valid point about the role of moderators. If we are going to have mods they need to perform as useful task, keeping threads on track would be one. If they can't do that why have them, let's make it an unmoderated free for all. Anyone who posts racist/offensive shite can be reported to Niall and be banned if need be.

This thread reminds me, how did Redeus get banned in the first place? What about that bloke Litmanen, I hear he's posting again under another name.

What a load of clap trap its the posters who are posting in them who should be keeping the threads on track.

Redeus was being a racist cnut. Litmanen claimed to 'follow' or 'have a soft spot' for United, despite the fact that he constantly made anti-United comments.

hes starting to sound like devilish now.....;)
yeah i agree with with Woody on this,if you leave your threads and don't reply on them, what else can you expect.
Oh,and quite a riveting thread by the 4th page....I thought Cal and DJS were ready to bond!

That's my point, we don't need mods, they do feck all anyway. We should be self policing.

IMO they are there to stop serious abuse, delete such threads, and ban posters, not interfere with the general flow of the conversation.

What's being proposed here is parallel to having conversational moderators in a pub. "You must stick to the line of debate". Madness!

What next, having to apply to a moderator before being allowed to speak? Round Robin style?

The point is that decent threads moderate themselves.

I bought a new DVD home cinema center yesterday......500 watts......5.1........it has totally transformed my DVD collection......Is anyone else watching the Celtic vs Rangers game??????.....

I don't get it..

Celtic have an all seater, yet they've always got an amazing atmosphere.

No muppets, all Glasgow lads and lasses in their crowd. Quite unlike, well, ........

That's probably true.... although, from what I've seen there are less, women and children at their matches, which probably gives the atmosphere more of an edge.

OT's got too much of a family atmosphere.

Those Turkish teams have the best atmosphere though, crazy nutters!

Feel free to talk football in the Football Forum.

Re_Idiot, if you don't like the way these forums work, feel free to visit Leyton Orient's forums.

Please shut the door firmly behind you on the way out - it's a cold draft in the winter...
