about the defence...

Denis Irwin reckons Roberto Carlos and Rio Ferdinand would be the perfect players to put United back on track after a season without a trophy. The former Republic of Ireland full-back would not be surprised if the club make a bid for both of the defenders but he accepts some of his old team-mates may have to be sold to make way.
"If the club do go for that type of player then I am sure the plc would insist that one or two go out as well," said Irwin.

"They need a player or two to improve the team and these are the types of players you need, the likes of Roberto Carlos and they have been heavily linked with Rio Ferdinand. "They will obviously have to strengthen at the back - Ronny Johnsen has gone and I've gone, Laurent Blanc has signed for another year but they will still need one or two others there to strengthen that area," Irwin told MUTV.

Everyone knows that we need at least two defenders and sale of players will be imminent - nothing new about that.

Are you sure no one still think that we should just keep our current squad and there is no need to change anything? ;)

Hands up those who want to keep our current squad as it is.

Weastey I believe would be the only one ;)

Can you please find some new material Ichk. This bit about we need two new defenders is getting old. I merely posted what Irwin said. It doesn't mean we're going to sign two new defenders. Its just his opinion.

Hand up! ;)

Venables is no Alex Ferguson. If Rio thinks he is, he's too stupid to play for United.

Leeds, Rio and Rio's advisers all have a financial interest in Rio moving on. Venables can't change that.

It's up to Rio: United means the challenge, the biggest stage, the best players. Leeds means uncertainty, player sales, transitional manager.

I merely pointed it out that it is old hat, I didn't start a "2 defenders" thread
