Brazilian midfielder Denilson has stunned Arsenal by announcing that he wishes to leave the club.

The 23-year-old has been on the Gunners' books since 2006 and has made over 150 appearances for the club.

He has, however, grown disillusioned with life at the Emirates and believes the time has come to move on.

The Samba star claims a lack of silverware is to blame for his transfer request, with Arsenal having gone six years since they last picked up a trophy.

Denilson feels he needs to make a fresh start if he is to make the most of his career and sees himself playing in the Primera Liga or Serie A in the near future.

"This has been the worst season of my life and I am so upset, so frustrated," he told The Sun.

"I am a winner and I came here to win trophies but I've been here for five years and won nothing.

"A footballer's career is over very quickly so it is time for me to move on.

Crazy

"This is not a sudden decision. I made up my mind eight months ago.

"I was fed up of coming home and feeling down.

"But I haven't said anything until now because I did not want to disrupt the team during the season. And I haven't caused a big scene.

"I've simply been to see Arsene Wenger and told him how I felt and he's agreed to let me go.

"I know some people will think I am crazy. They are right. It is a great club with a great organisation, a great manager and so many talented players.

"Yes, I make a good living at Arsenal but other things in life are important.

"I need a fresh challenge and although I know I'm taking a big gamble I am ready to take that risk."

Denilson added: "I can't see myself returning in a Chelsea shirt or Liverpool or Manchester City, and definitely not Tottenham. I think my future will be in Spain or Italy."

He's reached the point every Arsenal player gets to at some point. A midcareer crisis. after spending the last 5 years ring hyped to high hell about what a great prospect you are and how great this team will be when it reaches it's potential, he looks across at the likes of Anderson, Rooney, Nani, Messi and Ronaldo and sees what they had achieved by his age. Then he realises you have to move away from the academy to do that.

He's harbouring hopes of playing for us :p

Denilson is a strange one. When he was first signed he was unbelievable highly rated, had captained a series of Brazil youth teams and looked to have a really bright future. But at Arsenal he has looked very average. His passing is inconsistent, he can't really tackle or defend and he doesn't exactly bomb forward either. He's one of those players who I can't quite work out where they play, as no particular midfield role seems to suit him.

Bad times at Emirates.

Players feel something's wrong, but Wenger tells it's all right.

Jumping before he gets pushed, he's been on every Arsenal clear out list for this summer that I've seen.

He isn't the greatest of players, but in fairness it is hardly the greatest of teams.

A clear out would, in principle, be a great idea, but Wenger will only replace everyone he sells with someone even less developed and less experienced.

Lack of silverware being the main reason he wants out. I don't think he's that good that he'll end up at a club in La Liga or Siere A his preferred destinations where winning silverware is a common occurrence. Mr Denilson thinks he's better than he actually is i reckon.

I remember the w@nkfest over him when he first burst onto the scene.

Seems to becoming a trend at Arsenal with these promising young talents.

Those quotes should be translated as: " I'm fecking average and can't even get in a team of bottle jobs. The coach doesn't want me anymore and neither do any of the other competent English sides so I'll have to move to anyone that wants me.

Doubt arse fans will give a feck. They should be far more concerned that clichy is off, cesc wants to go and that nasri is seriously considering it. And that wenger has finally gone bonkers.

He's the stat devotees worst nightmare.

Statistically, he was excellent last season (or maybe the season before?) but never impressed whenever I watched him play.

He's a sideways passer,

He's the definition of average.

This is a huge insult to Arsemal, fabgregas is one thing but Denilson?!

My good God.

Does he really think he is good enough to go to a club that is winning trophies?

Not all stats, I bet MotM stats would reflect that :smirk:

All goes to prove that stats are bollocks. Wenger letting him think it's his decision is cruel.

Yeah, what happened to Vela? Looks like we got rhe right mexican.

Wouldn't be surprised to see him pitch up at Juve. No trophies there but it'll be a new bench to sit on.

He's been very average this season but then he's not been given a proper run of games for a long time. When he had Silva next to him, I thought he looked pretty good. Since then, he's regressed and looks lost in games.

The only chance of trophies he woild have in Spain is if he went to Barcelona or arguably Real Madrid, and neither of them will take him because they are packed with midfielders who can do a better job than him. Milan could grab hin as they don't really care that much about the quality of players they sign. I think he will go to a club like Olympiakos, Shakhtar or Fenerbahce though, i.e. earn plenty of money and win domestic trophies that no one really cares about.

Wenger's not shown much skill in shipping underperforming players out in recent years though has he?

Was always a great prospect but has ended up one of those players who can't make the level jump to the top tier.

At times he's looked as though he might but then seems to be anonymous for 5 games. Just has not got it at a consistantly high enough level.

Has always looked to me like a player who has also never quite physically matured - 23 now and still has the physique of a teenager. That has definitely been a problem for him as by now you expect the youngish still players to have fully matured into good athletic specimens but he still looks sometimes a lightweight player to me

Be interesting to see how he does under another regime.

Can't say he has not been given the games either. 150 is a lot of patience by the club for a player but still I don't think I can say he's never given less than 100% for the shirt

.........so best of luck to the lad

If his motivation is trophies, he's not good enough to feature for any title-contending outfit in Europe's big leagues. If his motivation is first-team football, then he'll have to drop a level to get it.

I remember reading one of his tweets during the January transfer window that said something along the lines of, "I'm a Gunner for life".

There was speculation he was on his way out of Arsenal back then, too.

No no what he meant to say was " I'm a Gurner for life"

Denílshit.

His finest hour:

The third goal came just seven minutes into the half. Denilson lost possession in their half, they played it forward to Park who was allowed to run and run and run and run and run and run while Clichy played startled rabbit. Eventually Park, who I'm sure couldn't believe his luck, just slotted it home at the near post. I know United had men over but Clichy had to go make a challenge at least, make him do something, you never know you might get a foot on the ball. That Denilson was overtaken by the referee as he 'chased' back says everything you need to know about him at the moment.

He has no future at Arsenal with Ramsey and Wilshere coming through.

I don't think he is as bad as people make out. Would probably do a good job at somewhere like Liverpool.
