Shocking news Guillermo del Toro has left 'The Hobbit', he had been working on the script and preproduction for the two films with Peter Jackson for almost two years. Today he announced that he was quiting as director, he posted a statement on TheOneRing.net to explain his departure:

"In light of ongoing delays in the setting of a start date for filming "The Hobbit," I am faced with the hardest decision of my life. After nearly two years of living, breathing and designing a world as rich as Tolkien's Middle Earth, I must, with great regret, take leave from helming these wonderful pictures. I remain grateful to Peter, Fran and Philippa Boyens, New Line and Warner Brothers and to all my crew in New Zealand.

Shame, he could have done a great job. But now at least if this film ever gets done Peter Jackson may actually decide to direct himself. Either that or it will be Michael Bay:nervous:

why does he have to leave? what an idiot.

It's boring enough spending three hours watching one of the Lord of the Rings films, I'm not surprised you get directors quitting after spending 2 years on one.

Del Toro would of made an interesting Director for The Hobbit... I love his style, when it comes to creative and imaginative use of production values he is one of the best.

yep, i think he could have done a good job. So assuming jackson opts to remain producer who is going to get this job?

Blompkamp for his brilliant District 9 and since he has already collaborated with Peter Jackson.

Andrew Adamson for his Narnia films... although I didn't enjoy them that much they are vastly inferior source material so maybe he could do better with The Hobbit.

James Cameron? Not sure what he is working on atm but an obvious suggestion.

Really it's a shame Del Toro dropped out.. although it's understandable.. how feckin' long can they expect a man to dedicate to one film that hasn't even started shooting yet??? He has that amazing ability to create a world that sucks you in... Big loss...

Don't know if he'd be up for having to answer to Jackson.

Not a chance  Can you imagine Cameron taking orders from someone else? He already thinks he's the best director in cinematic history, do you think he'll be told what to do by someone he feels is inferior? Not to mention he'd probably just spend the entire time thinking how much better Pandora is to Middle Earth. The hobbits would end up speaking Na'vi!

He'd much rather work on the screenplay for Avatar 2, I bet. Which I'd prefer, because Neytiri > any Middle Earth woman.

Ah shit, that's a real shame. He's got such a brilliant imagination and visual flair. Hopefully he worked on the project long enough that you can still see his influence in the finished movie.

Doesn't sound like the movie's even started - which is why I think he finally got pissed off with waiting and left.

Real pity that. He really was the perfect man to make these films his own. His influence will still be felt as he was heavily involved in scripting and development, but I doubt there's anybody in Hollywood who's name would cast the same level as excitment for The Hobbit now. Hopefully whoever takes over won't be too inclined to just copy Jackson's style from the LOTR trilogy.

With Guillermo Del Toro backing out of The Hobbit, talk had turned to Peter Jackson as a possible replacement. After all, he directed The Lord of the Rings. However Jackson's manager Ken Kamins has put the kibosh on those rumours.

"As for Peter directing, that's not something he can consider at this time as he has other commitments to other projects. But make no mistake, Peter and Fran's commitment to the franchise is total and will do everything necessary to protect the films and the investment made by New Line, [parent company] Warner Bros. and MGM."

Oh god please no.

Probably working on the sequel of the shittest movie ever.

Can't say that I blame him. For a couple of years he's been living in his head with this thing,he was signed on and now issues out of his control are delaying the shooting. that shit has no concept of time but he's been turning down work for this now for probably more than just 2 years. Time is money, not inspiration, dream's or drive.

Haha, I thought the James Cameron bit would bring up a bunch of anti-Avatar comments.

Then again you're all right about the fact he wouldn't be able to handle not being in control of everything.

Same reason a lot of the other big names probably won't end up directing the film...

Alfonso Cuarón's name is being brought up. I can see that happening.. not just cause he is friends with Del Toro but he has proven he can do both fantasy (Prisoner of Azkaban) and a barren desolate landscape (Children of Men).

Ooh... He gets my vote.

Currently watching Wolfman atm, should've walked away from this one too
