because my first language is Thai, i have very limited knowledge of some terms.. so anyone who is generous enough please clarify the following for me:

1. What's a powerhouse? Is this the position of a striker or a forward? What are the attributes of a powerhouse in general? Any example of players in our team who play this position? Anyone else from any other team?

2. What's a target man? Is this the position of a striker or a forward? What are the attributes of a target man in general? Any example of players in our team who play this position? Anyone else from any other team?

3. What exactly is direct ball tactics? How is it different from long balls? Any team using this tactic in particular?

Basically:

1. A powerhouse is someone that is very very strong.

2. A target man is the forward you want to get the ball to - the target like in archery.

3. Direct ball tactics are getting the ball into the back of the opposition's net with a single pass and a volley. ;)

Seriously, you already knew 2 of the answers.

i think so.. but i would still like some examples to go with it..

i was watching football analysis today and they called Rooney a powerhouse.. he looks smaller than the other guys on TV so i was curious whether i have always had the term correct in my own definition..

is rooney a powerhouse???

examples,

1) Sparky, Keano, Töfting

2) Niall Quinn, Heskey, Iain Dowie, John Fashanu

3) "Direct football" is the pc cousin of the long ball, instead of a long Sami Hyppia hoof up to Emile Heskey its a "long pass" aimed to a players toe and a goal chance created with 2 or 3 passses, all teams use it occasionaly, us for example, a Barthez throw out from a corner to Giggs who 1-2's with Scholes before sending a low cross in for Ruud to put away.

possibly, hes small and stocky and a low centre of gravity, looks like he could run through a wall. Shearer has a similar build.

thanx, you could be very helpful when not abusing other people! :D

Erm, so a powerhouse doesn't need to be a forward/striker? i've always had the impression that a powerhouse is a strong build striker.

Tofting is not a striker is he?

midfielder, powerhouse is just a tough player, not specifically tall, just broad shoulders and mean looking basically.

Otherwise known as counter-attacking football, something we used to be rather good at! ;)

Just split up the word: you get "power" and "house", think "engine room". That is, "engine"/"strength".

You could either be a powerhouse forward or midfielder. I would personally say it has as much to do with strength and being mean as it has to do with being the team's heartbeat. In Keano's case he is both, Rooney is probably more a case of the latter.

Sort of, it looks the same only we weren't exactly COUNTER-attacking, just a continuous onslaught.

We would create goalscoring opportunities constantly. Now the ball goes dead in midifeld and we just pass it around and end up losing it.

powerhouse = physically strong person

Doesn't necessarily have to be a footballer and it doesn't only relate to football.
It's just an analogy.

Long balls are generally aimless, more hit and hope. Usually used by the the hunchbacked gypsy

Direct balls are purposefully punted to someone with the intent of finding the forward line with extreme acccuracy. Unfortunately no-one at United has this abiolity right now

I'd say Barthez taking a goal kick and putting it directly in the opposition net would be the most direct form of direct football there is.

isn't it true that if you keep playing direct ball at lightning pace you become very tired soon into the season?

i've noticed that teams playing direct ball will hit a slump sooner than everyone else.. i mean.. you do end a season on a high note if you have a large enough squad but there will be a period in between where you just cannot get into rythm. Like what Arsenal are going through at the moment..

and how we always used to suffer from a bad patch every now and then right smack in the middle of the season.
