Mid 50s. Sad news. I feel like real change is going to have to be made with regards to head injuries in football, and even just the cumulative effects of regular headers. I wonder if the current generation of forwards in the game who largely shy away from aerial duels have one eye on their future health.

Might want a new thread rather than being attached to a page of comments from 15 years ago slagging him off?

Tbf I didn't even read the thread but you're right.

They don't head the ball in kids football anymore, think its U13 when it starts. Not sure that really changes much but its a start, can't see how football, NFL, rugby etc. can ever really change their rules without completely changing the sport to avoid this.

Remember him scoring from just inside the half way line against my boys Wycombe yonks back, great player at that level.

Dreadful news to have something like that so young.

There should be more research done on Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, and perhaps a ban on headers at all levels which would make the game more interesting since everyone would have to improvise and get more skilful with their feet like Spain. High kicks should still be disallowed as dangerous play of course.

While I agree more research needs to be done, I don't think heading should be banned.

I think heading the ball is nowhere near as prevalent in today's game as it used to be. If you look at clips from the 80s for example, the best and most "cultured" team in England was said to be Liverpool, but even their goalie Bruce Grobbelaar would just wallop high kicks into the opposition half for the opposition centre halves to head back. And every team was doing that!

Teams very rarely do that these days, even in the lower divisions. And of course the footballs are lighter than they were even in the 80s.
