De la Hoya-Mayweather set for May

Mayweather will risk his unbeaten record against De la Hoya

The much-anticipated bout between Oscar de la Hoya and Floyd Mayweather will happen next May, according to reports.

De la Hoya, 33, told ESPN.com that the bout on 5 May, 2007, was a "done deal".

Mayweather, who won the WBC welterweight title earlier this month, will step up to light middleweight for what he says will be his last fight.

It will be a lucrative final payday for the 29-year-old against De la Hoya, who has won 10 titles in six divisions but who has not fought since last May.

Terms were not revealed but both sides said that their fighters will make career-high purses, which means $25m+ (£13m+) for De la Hoya and in excess of $10m (£5.25m) for Mayweather.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told the website that the fight would take place in either Las Vegas or Los Angeles.

De la Hoya, who was an Olympic gold medallist in 1992, was last in the ring back in May when he claimed the WBC light middleweight crown from Ricardo Miyorga in a vintage display in Las Vegas.

Mayweather, who has won five titles in four divisions, outclassed Carlos Baldomir to win the WBC welterweight title on 4 November in the same city.

The American remains unbeaten in his 37 fights and said after beating Baldomir that his next bout would be his last.

De la Hoya is trained by Mayweather's estranged father but the Puerto Rican boxer said he would understand if his trainer felt too uncomfortable to be in his corner.

"I will sit down and talk about this," said De la Hoya. "I want us both to be comfortable with the situation.

"But I am prepared if he says no to me. I am prepared to move on and get somebody else."

Finally.

Yeah, he's going to get his ass kicked by Floyd. Oscar has been out of the ring for too long. But for 25 million I'd let Mayweather punch the hell out of me for 20 minutes. Sadly, I don't draw large pay-per-view audiences.

Although, now that I think about it, Mayweather doesn't have the power to KO Oscar, making it an interesting bout.

i'd pay to see mayweather kick the shit out of you

then i´ll start a thread in the caf to make fun of you :p

I was busy writing an apology letter to French Canada.

Now I'm going for breakfast.

I think De La Hoya will win this on points. Definitely a classic fight though.

Oscar won't be able to defend against Pretty Boy Floyd's speed. Mayweather doesn't have the power to knock him out. Should be a pretty good match.

Exactly the same thing people were saying about the Miyorga fight where Goldenboy produced a vintage boxing masterclass.

I wish I could remember those fights...I always get blind drunk at the pub watching the fights.

Another point fight fans should not forget is that Oscar will be fighting at his bet weight which is light middle whereas Mayweather will have to go up a weight class again.

I'm not so sure that Mr. Mayweather will leave de la Hoya's corner.

The way these fights are structured financially, the presence of Mayweather's estranged father in Oscar's corner only adds spice to the event, which means more viewers and more money.

It also adds value by providing a semblance of extra motivation for both fighters/corners.

Having seen Mayweather last few Fights no one in boxing would stand a chance against him but De La Hoya is a great boxer one of the best I think it will be closer then people are saying. lets all hope its a classic.

The next Question is who will Mayweather fight next maybe Hatton.

Family feud fuels Mayweather-De La Hoya

Like father, like son.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. told the Las Vegas Review Journal that he will not play the running game when he meets Oscar De La Hoya on May 5, 2007. He plans to stand and trade with De La Hoya, going for a knockout in what he still claims to be his final career bout prior to retirement.
Leading into to his recent bout with Carlos Baldomir, he also said that a toe-to-toe battle should be expected, but there was very little combat, and a lot of Mayweather using his superior skills to box Baldomir's ears off. He knows that most observers were unhappy with the way the fight played out, and he plans to fight in order to please the viewing audience.

"The fans aren't going to have anything to worry about," Mayweather told the newspaper. "I am going to stand toe-to-toe with Oscar. He has my word on that. I will be right there in front of him, toe-to-toe. It will be a toe-to-toe battle and, absolutely, I will (knock him out).

"He wanted to wear Reyes gloves and I said fine. He wanted it to be at 154 (pounds) and I said fine. I truly believe in my skills and I just wanted this fight to happen. That's all I wanted. When they handed me the paper, I signed it before I read a word."

His father, Floyd Mayweather Sr., also predicted a knockout, but the prediction was for the man he trains, De La Hoya.

The strained relationship between the Mayweather Sr. and his son has long been documented, and this fight appears to give the father some satisfaction against what he calls "a greedy son." He does not think his son wants to fight De La Hoya to prove he is the best. He feels that his son wants to hurt him by beating the star fighter he trains.

"This is a case of greed overcoming common sense," Mayweather Sr. said. "He's going to pay for getting greedy. He sees those dollars, but it's not about him wanting to fight Oscar, it's about him wanting to hurt his daddy. But he's going to have a surprise, because little Floyd is going to wind up on his ass. Little Floyd is fighting out of his weight class. Oscar definitely would knock him out."

The one Mayweather caught in the middle is Roger Mayweather, the uncle/trainer of Floyd Jr. and brother of Floyd Sr. He plans to be in his nephew's corner against De La Hoya. The family feud will only fuel the hype for the May 5 bout, and should also make for some very entertaining press conferences.

Low, I think. Pretty Boy Floyd has said the bout vs. Oscar will be his last, but people say a lot of things, right?

I doubt it will be Floyds last, he is just getting into the big money fights

Who's left after Oscar, though? Sure, the British public would want to see a fight with Hatton but I doubt that it would bring in a big ppv audience in America.

I think Mayweather Jr. will be looking to go out undefeated after beating De la Hoya...he'll probably then join up with Oscar's Goldenboy Promotions.

Maybe Moseley, not the fighter he was but would still be a good pay day

Hatton is one of the few that still has an unbeaten run. This is not my opinion but what I have read and heard is Mayweather has been avoiding Hatton for a long time. If Hatton wins more in the USA on PPV will there be a chance then.

Hatton versus Mayweather would be a real good fight, but there's no money in it for Pretty Boy Floyd. Plus he already moved up a weight class as a way of dodging him. Even Mayweather knows that dominating Kostya Tszyu is no small feat, if he fights Hatton and loses, how many more big money fights can he expect??

Mayweather should stop being such a pussy and fight Margarito. He hasnt fought a top fighter (top 5 in the division) since Castillo 4 years ago and people go around calling him the best. He's talented no doubt, but he needs to prove this by not fighting people he can run rings around for 12 rounds. Beating an ageing De La Hoya will do nothing apart from make him a shitload of cash Though having said that, I think DLH will put up a better fight than he did against Hopkins, and the extra weight may make a difference even though he won't come in anywhere near the 154 limit.

bump.

five days to go. the anticipation is killing me. not really, but I expect to be very entertained this Saturday.

This is one of those fights that only comes along very rarely...definately could go anyway but my money is with Mayweather, I don't think Oscar will be able for his agility

I'm going with Oscar. those left hooks will come out at some point. it's going to be a great night.

It's the only really good fight scheduled all year, but it should make up for all of the shitty PPVs that are going to be put on this year.....

any word on the undercard? Is the fight a Golden Boy Promotions fight? All of the fightes Oscars compnay has done have had really good undercards...
