Well the ATP tour is over now for the year. No more tennis till 2011 :(

Anyway one Davis Cup final before the season ends for good.

First time finalists Serbia lead by Djokovic versus the Nine time winners and rather surprise finalists this time, France.

Should be a great couple of days of tennis.

December 3-5th.

Come on Novak!

Oh my... Zimonjic/Troicki just lost a doubles game they were on the cusp of winning. I guess France is taking this one home now. :(

It's quite frustrating for Serbia as, not only were they leading two sets to 0, but the usual doubles partner of Zimonjic (Daniel Nestorovic) is Serbian. The pair just won the Masters Finals in London, and a bunch of Grand Slams too, however Nestorovic also has Canadian citizenship so he cannot compete for Serbia.

If he did, this would have been in the bag for Novak... I feel gutted for him especially. France has 1 million licensed tennis players to Serbia's 30 000 and all this was decided on a couple of points, not to mention that it wouldn't even have been a contest had Nestorovic been there alongside Zimonjic.

Why so sad? Aren't you French? I can't believe how they lost it yesterday. Zimonjic is brilliant and even if Troicki lost his nerve I would have expected them to win one of the final 3 sets!
France are in the driving seat sure but this is not over. I expect Novak to beat Monfils which now leaves Simon vs Tipsy in the final game and Simon's been poor for a year or two now. I'm yet backing Serbia to take this.

Novak absolutely thrashing Monfils right now. 6-2 5-2 and a double set point.

Djoko thrashed Monfils.

Now down to Troicki. Come on Troi!

Troicki gets the first set. Come on you Serbs!

Hope he does not have a meltdown like last night.

Troicki comes from a break down to go a break up in the 2nd :D

Llodra  Total and utter embarrassment. He should have at least tried to make it close so he can leave with a bit of dignity.

Grats to Serbia and Djokovic.

Serbia wins. Congrats to vuc, Mihalovic and all the Serbs on here :D

Cheers mate.

Great, wait unbelievable achievement for Serbia :)

I couldn't believe that right after we win Skysports just showed the French player crying.. WTF is that all about? Show the scenes of jubilation from our crowd/players..

Srbi: Mars na drinu posle pobedu je bilo PRICELESS.. xaxaxa

Andy Murray pays a tribute to Serbia's victory on his twitter

Amazing effort from serbia in davis cup, no funding, poor facilities but people with big hearts, work ethic and desire geat job

Djokovic most definitely deserved this. He deserves something as big as this and shows even a nation like Serbia who've never even made it to the finals can win the tournament.

If only Fed and Murray showed the same passion towards their country and Nadal and Djokovic do and who knows even the Swiss and Scots could one day win it!

Djokovic has had a very good second half of the season. Well deserved! Now time to stop choking next season and win another, much awaited Slam.

Well done Serbia. :thumbs up:

I´ve watched the final every day.

Murray is a world-class player (Premier League) and all other UK players are so shit (Premier Division, Level 7 on the English football league system).

You can't blame them. After Djokovic, Serbia has Troicki and Tipsarevic who aren't bad singles players then they have Zimonjic, a very good doubles player. After Federer, Switzerland has Wawrinka, and....? No recognized doubles player besides Allegro who isn't even that good. Same with Murray who's in an even worse position.

Well I can sort of understand Murray but Fed and Wawrinka can easily win both their games. They just need one decent doubles team. Sure Serbia are decent now but a year or two ago it was mainly Djoko and Tipsarovic who definitely is not as good as Wawrinka and Fed is also better than Djokovic. If the two of them try I'm sure they could do decently.

Murray I agree is in a sort of helpless situation.

They should make the Davis Cup once in 2/3 years. Would definitely attract more interest.

Does anyone actually understand the Davis Cup. I know it involves promotion and relegation, using a series of knock-out matches? And the world is divided by continent or something, and then you have "leagues" which go up and down with the "world league" or something at the top.

My experience of the Davis Cup is that after whoever is representing GBR wins or loses a match, the Guardian/Independent say that they are doing well/badly. Does it actually make sense and am I missing something or is it just a mental pass time that is carried on because it has the potential to one day be a big tournament.

The Davis Cup has a weird format with semi finals and various play offs all taking place at the same time but it's a pretty prestigious thing for a player to win.

It's the only tournament (other than the Olympics) in tennis where you get to represent your country and play as a part of the team.

It's become slightly boring in recent years but I still remember watching the great Nadal vs Djokovic match back in 2003 which was just so tense and fun.

Oh and Spain and Argentina are both 2-0 up and set to meet in the finals.

Ferrer, Verdasco, Lopez and Nadal vs Nalbandian, Del Po and co. Should be great!

Nalbandian is pretty incredible in Davis Cup matches

I mean this is the Eurozone/Africa Group 1, the Group that Great Britain will be promoted to next year.

Poland lost to Finland in the "2nd round play-offs", so Poland get a bye to the 2nd round and play Israel (who also got a bye to the 2nd round) whilst Finland who won the playoffs go straight to the 1st round, a round before Poland.

How does that make sense, who decided that. I simply don't get this competition. I know its 100 years old but come on. Maybe I'm looking into the detail too much. Maybe its just the World Group that is important.

Edit - Then again maybe Wikipedia got the score wrong.

To be honest I only care about the World Group i.e the top 16 and I just watch the matches when Spain play so I don't bother with the lower groups

Argentina in the final. Amazing scenes as Djoko fell down and didn't get up at 3-0 down.

Tears in his eyes!

You have to start at the first round, and go "outward". So if you lose your first game, you go left - to a play-off - and if you win you go right.

You might be right! But why did Poland go left and right

You might be right! But why did Poland go left and right

Because they either don't have enough countries to have that many rounds, or they have too many countries, so they had to add in extra rounds. So Poland got a bye through round 1, then lost in round 2. But because they lost their first match, they had to go into the playoff. They got a bye through the play off first round because there wasn't another losing team, so they went straight to the relegation play off final.

I'm not sure, but I think if Italy had lost in the 2nd round to Slovenia, they'd have played Finland in the play-off first round.
