PRESTON ISSUE 'HANDS OFF' WARNING OVER MOYES
by Mark Buckingham

PRESTON NORTH END have warned Manchester United that they will not allow manager David Moyes to become Sir Alex Ferguson's number two.
After Ferguson performed a retirement U-turn to remain at the Old Trafford helm, there has been speculation about the appointment of a new assistant.

Since Steve McClaren moved into management with Middlesbrough last summer, Ferguson has been working without a recognised sidekick.

Now he has pledged his future to The Red Devils, he is expected to bring in a right-hand man to ease the coaching workload.

Moyes had been mooted as a possible successor to Brian Kidd as Ferguson's assistant three years ago but it was McClaren who was handed the assignment.

The rumours have resurfaced but Preston's acting chairman Derek Shaw is in no mood to witness his highly-rated manager jump ship.

"David was linked with a move to Manchester United after Brian Kidd left the club and before Steve McClaren joined them," said Shaw.

"Now once again he's being linked with the job. But we have had no approach from Manchester United and nor would we welcome one.

"David is our manager, and we would like it to remain that way. He committed himself to Preston long term in the summer, and we hope that the contract will be honoured from both sides. He's with us until the summer of 2005.

"It's something we could do without, and the reports are very unsettling, especially because this is a busy and important time for us.

"But that is the world we live in, I suppose."

Robbo is the obvious choice...take the pressure of management off him and he'll do the buisness.
we're not looking for a successor, we just want a good coach who has the respect of the lads...Robbo fits the bill...the old boy feel good factor is a bonus.

I'm not so sure. Is Robbo a good 'technical' coach? We need an innovator who can make these players mesh. We have Robbo on the pitch in Keano so duplicating his Captain Marvel attitude is already a given. I think the reason McClaren was so well respected was because he had new and successful ideas that improved fitness and technique. I think we need someone like SM again to fine tune the squad. Maybe Robbo is the answer, but imo, I don't think he is. We shall see.

He wants to groom - ala Mclaren n Kidd!!!

An extra pair of hands never hurt anyone!!

I dont see whats wrong with the current backroom staff except one thing.

Remember when we had Eric? The players watched him and learnt possibly more than any training can teach them. They learnt a playing style but also a training style IMO. He had a huge influence on them I reckon, the likes of Beckham, Giggs, Scholes, Nevilles and Butts.

Compare the youngsters who grew up in his presence to the ones who are without it and I think we need someone like him back. Not that it was all down to him, but he made an impression thats for sure. Bringing him back as a coach would be great IMO, for every player, simply because of his presence.

Thats all we lack, someone like him and his influence, but for now give the staff some credit, they can do it I reckon.
