PRESTON ISSUE 'HANDS OFF' WARNING OVER MOYES
by Mark Buckingham
PRESTON NORTH END have warned Manchester United that they will not allow manager David Moyes to become Sir Alex Ferguson's number two.
After Ferguson performed a retirement U-turn to remain at the Old Trafford helm, there has been speculation about the appointment of a new assistant.
Since Steve McClaren moved into management with Middlesbrough last summer, Ferguson has been working without a recognised sidekick.
Now he has pledged his future to The Red Devils, he is expected to bring in a right-hand man to ease the coaching workload.
Moyes had been mooted as a possible successor to Brian Kidd as Ferguson's assistant three years ago but it was McClaren who was handed the assignment.
The rumours have resurfaced but Preston's acting chairman Derek Shaw is in no mood to witness his highly-rated manager jump ship.
"David was linked with a move to Manchester United after Brian Kidd left the club and before Steve McClaren joined them," said Shaw.
"Now once again he's being linked with the job. But we have had no approach from Manchester United and nor would we welcome one.
"David is our manager, and we would like it to remain that way. He committed himself to Preston long term in the summer, and we hope that the contract will be honoured from both sides. He's with us until the summer of 2005.
"It's something we could do without, and the reports are very unsettling, especially because this is a busy and important time for us.
"But that is the world we live in, I suppose."
