Beckham: A joke footballer

An insight into what a sad and pathetic joke David Beckham has become.

I was not aware of the incredible (lack of) achievements since he turned up in Yanksville MLS with the Milky Way or whatever his team is called. But its just begger belief!

How any of you lot can respect this (albeit very rich) fool is beyond me!

Beckham plan sparks conflict

David Beckham confirmed last night that he will join AC Milan on a short-term loan deal during the Major League Soccer close season but emphasised that he is not saying arrivederci to his underperforming MLS side, LA Galaxy.

The 33-year-old England midfielder’s honeymoon in Hollywood is long over, to such an extent that the LA Times suggested on Friday that “the Beckham circus could fold its tents and the club could go back to being what it once was — competitive in MLS”.

Galaxy lie second from bottom of the Western Standings going into today’s final game of the regular season against FC Dallas and have no chance of reaching the playoffs, which they also failed to do in Beckham’s first season in California.

Their record of eight wins, 13 defeats and eight draws is symptomatic of an experiment gone badly wrong.

But despite Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti’s declaration that the Rossonneri would like to make the proposed move permanent, the Galaxy captain insisted that he will be back in California for the start of the 2009 MLS season. “I will be back. My commitment is to the Galaxy and that has not changed,” Beckham said.

“Footballers don’t have four months off in any league in the world apart from here. It’s my second season and I’m not prepared to have that time off without playing or training. I don’t agree with the amount of time off we have here. My body is not programmed for that.

“It’s a two-month spell, maybe a little longer. Milan have got a great team, so I’m not expecting to go straight in the starting line-up. I will have to earn the right to get into that team. I’m in Serie A form. It’s about getting my fitness up.

“I came to the Galaxy to actually win trophies so I want to do that. I’m also very committed to my role as the MLS ambassador as well. It’s been slightly disappointing because we haven’t made the playoffs again. But on the other side of it, the success of the MLS as a whole and the attendances and things like that, they have all been rising, so it’s a great position the MLS is in at the moment.

“My hope for the season coming with the Galaxy is to win trophies. With Bruce Arena as manager, it’s important that we forget the disappointments and step up to the challenge.”

Landon Donovan, Beckham’s teammate, spoke for many in the Galaxy team when he criticised the timing of Beckham’s announcement. “It could have been better timed,” said Donovan, whose own future is in the balance, for he is a target for Jurgen Klinsmann at Bayern Munich.

“It doesn't make a huge difference but it would have been nice to have waited. I am waiting until after Sunday’s game before anything on my future comes out.”

There has been no official comment from Galaxy’s owners, Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG), but Arena said on Wednesday: “I don’t see where that benefits MLS or the Galaxy. Given the position the Galaxy is in, it would seem very odd to me if we were loaning out our top players at the start of the season. ”

In the past four years Galaxy have accumulated 41 wins, 55 defeats and 27 draws in the regular season. Only Real Salt Lake, a new MLS franchise, has fared worse.

Last season Beckham drew a crowd of 66,237 to Giants Stadium in New Jersey to watch him play the New York Red Bulls but this season the attendance was 46,754. FC Dallas had a crowd of 22,331 when Beckham came to Pizza Hut Park in May, up from 14,600 when Galaxy played there without Beckham last June. But the attendances fell to 8,960 and 8,541 for each of Dallas’s next two home games, signs that Beckham’s impact is only ephemeral.

Galaxy have yet to say they are happy with the idea. “We are in exploratory talks to look at whether [it] makes sense for the Galaxy and David,” MLS deputy commissioner Ivan Gazidis said on Thursday. “If it does — and only if it does — then things will go forward.”

I really don't see what you're getting at? You just look like another idiot getting in any cheap shots at Beckham because he left United.

He's a United Legend and regardless of what some say has done a fair bit for football as well.

i might be wrong but isnt there a cap on how much wages can be paid per team?... if so surely the massive amount they pay beckham would imact on the wages and therefore the quality of players they can get for the rest of the squad???

oh no he isn't.

Beckham was a big part of the most succesful season United ever had.

And he went to the US only after Capello didnt play him at all and it seemed like he had no future with madrid, only after capello did a uturn and beckham again was a big part of madrid winning la liga.

Lets not get all panto now, retard.

He's a United Legend and i'd bet my user account on it that most of the semi sane people who post on the caf agree with me. I even bet Red Indian Chief would agree with me and that doesn't happen very often :smirk:

you may lose your user account as the 'is beckham a legend?' debate has been had on many seperate threads and a very even debate.

Anyway, that was not my intention here on this thread. I was just totally unaware how AMAZINGLY UNSUCCESSFUL he has been in MLS. For a player who was meant to be playing at standards way below himself, he simply should made much more of an impact. But his Milky Way team is going backwards.

Its incredible that it should be so, utterly incredible.

Yes the MLS uses a completely fecked up system to control wages.
They have what we'd call reserves i suppose on the squad that don't even make enough to support themselves. something like 10k pounds a year.
Then they have a general salary for 90% of the players at about 65k pounds for the year and then they have the special players or whatever rubbish its called who take up most of the rest of the budget. But in general the galaxy are a shit team and play shit football.

que allwaysredwood to come storming in here with some bullshit proclaiming how the MLS is great .

The LA Galaxy sucks because of horrid defending

must be!! Doh, why did I not think of that!

Why can Beckham apologists never come to an objective view? He should be crucified for what he has not achieved in the MLS. Its borders on the obscene!

A joke footballer who was won 7 league titles in two different countries, and a champions league, and twice been voted second best player in the world?

yeah... im not the biggest beckham fan but its undeneyable that hes had a pretty good carear...

throw in 100+ england caps, captaining his country

putting in numerous crosses and free kicks that were just brilliant and having one of the best games ive ever seen a footballer play in my live in the england greece game...

hes a bit past his best now though and does not look that bothered in the little mls ive seen...

what do you not understand in the statement 'what a joke footballer Beckham has become'?

He was once have a highly decoarted and very talented player but those days are sooooo long gone its not funny.

Im shocked at how ineffectual he has become. I mean for feck sake, he cant even make a positive impact in the MLS.

Serie A and Milano is going to be hilarious. Still, he'll shift a few shirts I guess.

Why should he be crucified? :wenger:

His stated objective was 'to win trophies in the USA'. That is mainly what his salary is for. But the facts show that in his time in the MLS, his team has gone backwards.

Players like Shenchenko or Veron were taken to task for the lack of impact they had. Just seems that Goldilocks is being treated differntly. ANd its a joke cos its the fecking MLS!!

actually i have a feeling he will do ok at milan...

afterall he will be delivering crosses etc to a different quality of player

I'm sorry, I obviously missed the bit where you said 'has become' in the title.

He is still a highly decorated and talented player. Unfortunately he doesn't have the legs he once had, but thats understandable. If you stuck Scholes in that LA Galaxy team then they still wouldn't be top of the table, as crazy as that might sound to you.

To be honest I don't even know why I am responding, you obviously have a personal beef with beckham and this little hissy fit you are throwing over absolutely nothing is a bit embarassing

I think what they are getting at is all players eventually decline. No need to make light of it. Happens every player no matter who they were/are. For what hes done for United I think he should always have our respect. Not sure if he's a true legend though.

Beckham sacrificed having a serious football career the day he went to the US. He isn't stupid and he would have known that.

Before this however, he had a great career. Nobody can dispute that.

United legend? Not for me. One of a list of very good United players in our history, but not a legend.

So because Beckham hasn't single-handedly transformed a club into the best in its country he is a pathetic joke....right

Shit thread.

:lol::lol:

Since when was football an individual sport? Oh wait, it's soccer over there, so it got to be different right?

First of all, he's got fecking Abel Xavier in defence, dopehead's going to be sniffing more coke than tackling. Then he's well known only for his crosses, freekicks and vision, and not his ability to weave in and out of players continually. Look at the shit he has at the end of the ball.

Ineffectual, you make it sound like he's going to get 5 freekicks every game.

Hes a great player and thats never been in doubt.
But this whole MLS circus has been a fecking joke, and he has shown a total lack of respect to his team and its players and staff.
He would have never been able to behave like this at madrid or United.
If his heart was not in playing for LA, he should not have gone there.
But he wanted to further his image and gain attention on a bigger stage, so he went to LA, took huge wages and did feck all.
He made a joke of the MLS(not hard to do) and his attitude of flying all over the fecking world while his team are in trouble.. modeling and hanging out with tom cruise...pfft.
chopper says "David Beckham harden the feck up".

Spot on.

I wouldn't say he became a joke when he went to America but he became a player who shouldn't really be taken too seriously in the same vein as others who have gone to the US like Xavier and Lundgberg.

It was silly of Beckham to go play in the States, but he's not the first player to do so.

Other joke footballers like Pele, Cruyff and Best played there as well.

All at the end of their careers when they played football purely to make a fast buck and weren't really to be taken as serious as before.

Exactly which is why most fans don't take him seriously any more.

I have a feeling he regrets moving there so early now.

Was a good footballer, but his various antics make it hard for me to slot him into "Legend" category.

I'm of the opinion that he went to the States to make money first, improve "sawker" second, and attention for Posh third, which is why I believe Becks farced up his career the moment he opted not to move to the likes of Newcastle and Tottenham rather than the Galaxy.

about all he's good for now unfortunately

and you think scholes would even consider going?
let's face it - beckham is a celebrity now not a footballer, and how such he has reached such iconic status astounds me tbh.

amazing how far a footballer can go just because he's deemed to be good looking.

Beckham was a great player for us and showed his worth after criticism with Madrid. He's actually making an effort to try to maintain his fitness to play for his national team. that should be respected in my book.

If he really wanted to keep his place in the national team he would have played in a competitive league.
