Manchester United set to be beat City to young Lazio midfielder
According to Calciomercato, Lazio youngster Daniel Cataldi is coming over to Manchester this summer to sign for Manchester United. The red side of Manchester are the favourites to secure Cataldi, even though Manchester City have been linked with the midfielder for some time.
Cataldi represents Italy at U18 level and is an attacking player, described in some places as a midfielder and in others as a typical number 10. There's not much known about him in England but given that the Manchester clubs are battling it out for him, there has to be something there.
Manchester United have a record of bringing over young Italians with Federico Macheda, Alberto Massacci, Davide Petrucci, Michele Fornasier and, back in 2004, Giuseppe Rossi all having made the move whilst youngsters at Serie A clubs.
Calciomercato say it's an issue for Italian football and not just down to Premier League teams offering more money to young players who show potential. They say that when the youngsters move to England they are treated like real professionals and the training is at a more senior level.
In Italy the system of co-ownership sees many youngsters playing at several lower league clubs and disappearing from the radar, they say a more structured system in England is preferable. Even though it happens in reverse occasionally, Paul Pogba is used as a possible example, there's a worry that Italian clubs are losing out and need to do something about it.
