Croke Park??

To all the GAA people do you think Croke Park should be opened to foreign games? If not why not?Personally i'm undecided but i'm tending to sway against the idea.

didn't they have some American college teams play American football there a few years back? can't get more foreign than that.

Dunno what the big fuss is about anymore. The GAA is alive and well despite the existence of football (soccer) and rugby in Ireland. Having a few Intl games there won't affect the popularity of GAA sports and would bring the GAA loads of money in return.

it definitely should be opened up to all other sports

the only thing holding it up are the dinosaurs who still hold positions of "power" within GAA circles

Always wondered why there's never international matches played there..

It's soccer and rugby that are the problem in reality, although they say 'other sports' - that's wrong, there's been Aussie Rules, Boxing, American Football in the stadium at various times.

A trial run might sway some of the naysayers. Allow Rugby and Soccer to be played there for the duration of the building work at Lansdowne Road. The world won't end and Ireland won't have to go abroad to play 'at home' even though there's an 80,000 seater lying idle up the road.

I think this might be the "solution" for now -- it might persuade the GAA to see the benefits -- financial -- which will probably cause the light to go on.

from rte.ie/sport

Seven of the Ulster counties are now in opposition to Roscommon's and Sligo's motions for change.

All 12 Leinster counties want Croke Park to be opened.

Cork are the only dissenting county in Munster, however, Limerick have yet to decide on their stance.

In Connacht, Mayo and Leitrim have also yet to vote, with the remaming counties in favour of an amendment.

Congress votes on the matter on April 16, with a two-thirds majority needed to pass a motion.

I think the best option would be a temporary trial period. What happens when they start playing God Save the Queen?Personally i dont have a problem with this but given our heritage i beleive it would cause a bad atmosphere.Especially considering the history of Croke Park

Would they have to though? We're not due to play England in soccer and the rubgy boys are in Twickenham next year, aren't they? What's the time frame for the Lansdowne Road re-jig.

Incidentally, I'd like to see Martin Johnson try any shenanigans at Croker....

Thats the thing theres been no specific date given for landsdowne being finished! It seems to sound like a longish development, other than that i dont see any reason why the GAA would be so divided over the issue.I think its more to do with English sports rather than "foreign" sports. Its a tough one!

Interesting debate coupled with the proposed new stadium (55 mill) to be opened in the North on the old Maze prison. It is proposed that GAA alongwith other sports may play here. GAA has to change with the times, many of its fans do follow these other sports as well.

But the argument is that the GAA is the only thing left untouched by foreign influence and there are many people who want to keep it this way!
about time Ireland stopped being so backward in all things and came out of the darkages. Its now 2005 for gods sake!

cool, just read about it on RTE.
bout time the world gets to see Europes finest stadium, they should apply for a CL final asap.

Actually, I think it is more or less finished for the foreseeable future anyway. There's a railway line running just behind that open end and so I don't know if they have any other plans, or if their hands are tied.

It holds 82,500 as is.

Can you imagine the noise emanating from the stadium if Hill 16 (Railway End) was covered during a championship match involving Dublin whose fans are renowned for getting behind their team by singing and chanting non-stop from start to finish

Its a conspiracy

 The Arnotts remind me of Liverpool sometimes..... ;)

"Mick Lyons is illegitimate
he aint got no birth certificate"

Fantastic atmosphere on the hill when they sung that, he even turned round to face us, all 10,000 of us and gave a sly finger to each and every one of us to which we replied,

"Mick Lyons

is a wanker

is a wanker"

imagine "Molly Malone" at full throttle in a covered Hill 16 stand, intimidating or what, worth an extra player to the Dublin team

May I remind everyone that Westmeath is just 1 of two teams who lifted a Men's Senior Football Inter-County Cup in this great stadium last Year. Exdluding Armagh who do not qualify.

A bit unfair there GB. Ireland is one of the most Advanced Countries in the world and if the Brits gave us back the North I am sure you would enjoy living in a United Ireland.

A lot of money has went into the building of the new Croke Park, the revenue generated from these "foreign sports" will help in offsetting that.I find it funny that some people here in Ireland whilst discussing this vote were constantly referring to rugby and Soccer as foreign sports, they played American football in Croke Park a few years back, how more foreign a sport can you get.
