Mazhar Tactics

The plan is straightforward: get the most out of the incredible attacking talents of the front 4 by giving them all of the support that they need. With their mental fortitude, tenacity, skill, smarts, speed, and determination, the attacking quartet of Kopa, Nedved, Bergkamp, and Ronaldo can be a test for any defence.

To lay the foundations, my team has an incredibly solid back line. Courtois is arguably the best keeper of this generation with an incredibly presence in the box. Ahead of him, Vogts is one of the best of all time at defending the right flank. Der Terrier's role is to lock down the right flank and defend first and foremost. Laying the foundation in the middle is the incredible Puyol-Piqué partnership that won so many trophies for both Spain and Barcelona. Puyol pulling out all stops to stop an opposition shot/goal works well with a silkier, more composed defender in Piqué, who'll cut off the passes and plug the gaps that appear. At left back, Roberto Carlos will have the freedom to push up and offer more attacking support thanks to the foundation laid by his other defensive teammates as well as his keeper.

To allow the front 4 to play so fluidly, the midfield needs to be solid and tenacious. What better midfield partnership for that than Desailly and Robson? Desailly was as much of a rock in the midfield as he was at the back, and he'll be ideal to deal with Sjor's midfield being run by Xavi. Robson will add even more steel in the midfield and also offer attacking support to the attacking quartet. Desailly will be the more defensive midfielder to allow Robson to play his natural box-to-box role.

The attack is designed to be fluid, unpredictable, and capable of unlocking the opposition via any means possible. Nedved and Kopa were both incredibly in the middle, but their dribbling also made them very difficult to deal with out wide. Kopa's dribbling made him very difficult to stop, and when he couldn't dribble, he could unlock defences with his incredible vision and array of passes. Nedved was no different in that regard but was also a long-range goalscoring threat. Nedved was also an incredibly tireless runner and will be tasked to support the team off the ball by tracking back and helping protect the left flank along with Roberto Carlos. The front two of Bergkamp and Ronaldo will have the freedom to roam into various areas and operate as more than just mere strikers. Both forwards were incredible goalscorers and also able to create something out of nothing. Bergkamp's creativity will also add to the unpredictability that Sjor's team has to deal with.

Finally, if all else fails, my team has incredible set piece threats. Nedved's deliveries were very difficult to deal with, whilst Roberto Carlos had a rocket of a left foot for his more powerful direct free kicks. In the box, Piqué and Desailly are all major threats any time a ball is delivered into the box. Lastly, if the team's in a tough spot, the mental fortitude of players like Puyol, Robson, and Nedved wil ensure that we get over the finish line in any way possible.

Sjor Tactics
Something a bit different around Xavi. Still very much a possession based team but in a 442 system, wont be tiki taka but rather a slightly direct version similar to Spain where Xavi played alongside Senna.
Side full of class on the ball and willing runners in all segments of the game.

That Sjor defence is the difference for me - not high on Pique or Carlos at all. Also think his midfield duo controls the action a lot better.

yeah like pro i dont rate maz defence apart from vogts and tibo, puyol is fone but for me he is more a character and a leader then a great defender.

dont rate desailly in midfield, like at all...you pretty much giving up possession battle with him in there at this level so the plan to defend fenomeno and co. would probably be to keep the ball much longer then i initially planned and let Xavi, Puskas and co. cook in the final third. Id fancy Etoo to have a lot of fun against Pique and Puyol who even though is built ideally to counter pace and dribblers, he struggled a lot against numberus players of that ilk

Piqué deals with pace by plugging the gaps and cutting off the passing lanes, not by directly marking and engaging in 1-on-1 battles with them. He's very good at reading passes in behind him, so I wouldn't be too worried about his ability to deal with Eto'o. Regardless, given the level of players my team's facing, Desailly comes in to offer that added protection to the back line.

As for the midfield battle, if this was a 4-4-2 vs. 4-4-2, then my team would lose. However, the beauty of a 4-2-2-2 is the ability of one of the attacking mids to get involved in the build-up and effectively outnumber the midfield. This is where both Kopa and Nedved will find some joy. Robson's also no slouch on the ball as he's shown in his legendary performances for United and England, whilst Piqué was great at passing the ball out of the back and evading the opposition press on him. My team will get more time on the ball, and Sjor's side will need to respect the ball-playing ability of Piqué as well as the playmaking abilities of both Nedved and Kopa.
