Manchester United are refusing to comment on claims they are set to agree a deal with Italian outfit Lazio for Argentina striker Hernan Crespo.

Speculation has linked the hitman to Old Trafford for several weeks and Sir Alex Ferguson fuelled the fire last week when he said he wants to add to his strikeforce before the group stage of the Champions League gets underway.

Reports coming out of Rome suggest Crespo has been offered to United as Lazio try to settle their debts.

The former Serie A champions, who reportedly still owe United £12m from the signing of Jaap Stam last year, look like being forced to part with their prize assets because of the current financial crisis in the Italian game.

Lazio value Crespo at more than £20m and it is claimed they have told United they would be happy to divide the balance into instalments and wait until next summer for the first down payment provided the Stam debt is written off.

With United chief executive Peter Kenyon stating players will have to be sold before any more cash is spent this season, Lazio's offer could be too good to refuse.
