Yes I can hear you Clem Fandango!
Right, I figured that this was the best place to put this. Basically, I want to buy a desktop, primarily for office work, since I only have a laptop and it is getting very old and slow.

I'm looking for a system that will last, has very good specs and is reliable, and will be used for work, not gaming.

Can anyone recommend me anything? I can spend up to £800.

Up to £800 will get you a very decent system these days. I can't recommend a specific system because I only buy the parts and build myself so I'm not down with current base systems. But for that kind of money your gonna be looking at Quad Core atleast.

I've been told it's cheaper to build your own but I am technologically inept and would be happy to spend a little more and save me the hassle. What computers do you build?

Mainly gaming systems for friends etc, but at Uni studying it so I deal with it day in day out. Mate of mine just built a Quad Core, 4gb RAM, IP35 Pro, Geforce 8800 GTS etc which is not far off my spec which cost me £1200 a year and a half ago for just £700 odd, not including monitors etc.

I dunno about buying, Dell maybe?

Basically get yourself a ready made system....for 800 i reckon you could get a very good one.

You'll need a graphics card but since its not for games why not go for a cheap one? or even opt for onboard graphics(allthough if you do decide to play a game on your pc it might struggle)

Get a high end quad core and plenty of RAM(should be able to get this since your saving on graphics)

IF you want it to last, ideally(if its within price range) even see if you can get one of those Intel i7's with DDR 3 RAM(if affordable)....both of those are relatively new at the minute and will last for quite a while.

Alternatively....you could state your budget(ok £800).....tell exactly what you want it for and exactly what you expect from it then let other caftards loose on building your system and getting back to you with specs and a price
