....this year to last.

2001/2002 - Played 5; Conceded 8. Scored 11.

2002/2003 - Played 5; Conceded 4. Scored 9.

I'd call that an improvement.

Goalkeeping position strengthened.

O'Shea coming through seemingly able to play anywhere in the back 4.

Mickey and Nicky improved.

No Wallwork on the bench.

:)

And we're playing with an under-strength squad.

take off the games vs the hungarian who really sholdnt count and uve got:
played 3: conceded 3 scored 4.

Our defence is significantly weakened by injury. Otherwise I think it may be much better.

We look more solid as a whole. I think once we start converting chances we will be on fire. <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" />

really , some would say that return leg was a big match , for both sides. what if MU lost would it count as a big match?

Agreed, Livvie. The crunch matches have yet to come though. The only sort of crunchy one so far was the Chelsea game and there were some good bits but too many bugs to iron out.

Still a long ways to go though...

big match or not it was a walk in the park against a team that on a normal day (not the one we had in the away game) are not an qual opponent to us.

crem ,

on any given day you could meet your equal in football. they all count.

They've both scored goals since the season started, and before. Especially Ruud!

When they haven't scored for several games, you might have a case.

But this is one game!

It was a European qualifier - it counted quite a lot.

Maybe Celtic forgot to count Basle.

Hmmmm, let's see here.

Didn't we start last year with

Fulham win 3-2

B'Burn 2-2

Villa 1-1

Compare that to this year

WBA 1-0

Chelsea 2-2

Sunderland 1-1

Basically, same mediocre start as last year in which we won no trophies. But then we also had Andy Cole to play up front for a couple of months and Veron was playing superbly during August and Sewptember.

Damn I'm frustrated. Come on United and beat Boro!!

You're right for pointing this out Livvie. Some folk on here seem to think it's crisis time. A draw at Stamford Bridge is a good result, as is the Sunderland. The only problem I can see is the missed chances at the moment, but if we continue to make chances as we are, 17 against the mackems, I'm sure it will improve.

We never start the league with the sharpness as some like to think though, it's well-known we don't really get into gear until around Christmas, with the exception of one or two seasons.

It's an average start. But I'm sure we'll be looking back on these two draws as valuable points.

2 for Ole, 3 in the case of Ruud. For the league, anyway. Still, I agree... there's no problem.

Huh?

In the league, United's scored 4 with Ole & Becks on one each & Giggs top-scoring with 2!

Livvie20 - We're in the same 'position' in the EPL as last season with 1 win & 2 draws & whilst I've seen a slow & steady improvement in the defence, especially since the absence of Barthez, the attack seems to be some cause for concern, mainly due to Ruud geting frequently caught off-side to break down numerous United attacks, loosing the ball so cheaply, being static, & worst of all, missing 'sitters' which he would have comfortably put in last season !

But as you've rightly stated, it's early season & United have a reputation of being poor starters.

Our start wasn't the problem last year, it was our home form. If we had beaten teams that usually get a hiding at OT things would have been different. Improve that this season and we'll improve our chances of winning the league. A steady start with two difficult away fixtures out of the way and same points as the ARSE if we win tomorrow night, not alot to worry about imo.

The standard of opposition has been higher, apart from our 1st game.

Chelsea are a higher standard than Blackburn, and Sunderland had just come off a win against Leeds so their confidence was high.
We've started ok. Lets be honest if we had put our chances away we would have had 9 points. We are playing much better than we were at the start of last season.
Last season we were somewhat lucky to draw with blackburn and villa, (especially Villa if i remember rightly) this year we were unlucky not to win the games

That unfortunately might be the problem!

Early last season, the fighting spirit & attacking prowess was still there, a continuation of the United of old. That's why despite being behind in all 3 opening games, United clawed back to win or draw.

This season, United has shown that despite being superior in all their games so far, they failed in the UEFA Champs away-leg 0-1, scored only 1 vs WBA, & allowed Sunderland to claw back despite our obvious superiority.

The strikers are firing blanks in the EPL, ( Ruud has nought ) & we're allowing opponents back into the game. What more, teams don't fear us anymore - even at OT!

Arsenal has now taken over the mantel of the most feared team in the EPL!

That may be a good thing. It may means teams don't just sit back and defend and try and catch us on the break. We have always played better against teams that have been prepared to have a go. I think we are struggling to break down defences like we used to.

Evidence of the early games is that we'll have fewer runaway victories , but teams will score fewer soft goals against us. Sounds like championship form !
