Got NCAA Football for my Xbox today ... who are the favs for next season and what players are tipped to have a great season? Saw some very early player rankings for the 2005 draft and Texas had 3 players (D Johnson, R Wright and C Benson) in the top 10. Could you shed any light on them, Marcello?

DJ is awesome at MLB. He will be a top 10 draft pick, health provided.

Benson is a good RB, but not sure how he'll perform in the pros, but he should get 1300+ yards this season and is a Heisman hopeful.

Wright is a monster...6'2, 315...should have a great year, but the DL is weaker after April's draft and teams will double team Wright. His stats might drop off. Reminds me of John Randle...not real tall but big, fast, explosive, and strong.

The Horns will struggle at WR, but have two solid TEs (Scaife and Thomas) and Vince Young is a Michael Vick clone.

The OL is good and could become the strength of the team this year if Scott (LT), Allen (RG), Blalock (RT) and Glynn (C) continue to improve on last season's progress. Both Blalock and Scott could become a top tackles this season (Blalock was a Freshman All-American in 2003).

The secondary is young and inexperienced and will struggle. They'll be a bowl team again, but I'm not predicting a conference title. They'll find a way to blow an early season game as usual, get trashed by OU, drop a heart breaker to a weaker road team (Tech or Colorado) and finish 8-3.

I hope I'm wrong.

Three years running, two of those games totally lopsided...why would I have confidence? Me hoping for Texas to win a conference championship and play for the national championship is like being a Pool fan and hoping for a League title and a spot in the CL final.

Ain't gonna happen soon.

Miami has some potential breakout players next year.

Tyrone Moss (RB)
Kevin Everet (TE)
Baraka Atkins (DE)
Antrelle Rolle (CB)

USC will do well this year. Should be a three way race between Miami, USC, and LSU.

What's going on in Florida these days? Nice to see UofM chasing such a standout citizen. Is this a return to the old Jimmy Johnson/Dennis Erickson days? CBS Sportsline Top 25

To summarize reams of police reports:

Willie Williams -- he of the 12 arrests at age 19 -- is being wooed by Miami. It is almost laughable that he is currently on probation after violating a previous probation. The only sentence left is double secret probation.

Up the road, three Florida International players were nearing double-digit felony charges earlier this month after an alleged crime spree. The lowlights: Police say one player, it's not clear which, pistol whipped a student and then shot out the window of a car.

At Florida State, the motto is, "If you can't beat 'em ... beat 'em." Tallahassee police said they had to use pepper spray and a stun gun to subdue 290-pound offensive lineman Bobby Meeks. Police say Meeks was resisting arrest by kicking and punching officers outside a club. Apparently what the Tally cops call resisting rest, some players call Saturday night. If that's not bad enough, Meek's uncle was charged with battery in an alleged fight with officers.

The same night in the same town, Florida A&M kicker Paul Johnson was charged with DUI after being found passed out in his car along the side of the road. Not sure if the car was parked wide right of the median.

I would love for UM to return to the late JJ early Erikkson days, though it seems highly unlikely since Coker has established a good rapport with many parents with his awe shucks Andy Griffith style personality. Willie is more of a prankster who gets involved in the wrong crowd. Of course none of this would be in the news had the University of Florida (Gay-Turds) not tried to get him drunk and in trouble with the law while he was visitng Gaysville last year. They knew he was a UM lean and with no chance of getting him, they tried to get him in trouble knowing that his probation hadn't expired yet. Luckily the judge saw things as they were and realized that Willie's grades and SAT scores didn't match his behaviour, and decided to give him a second chance.

Dude, the kid has been arrested 12 times by the age of 19...kind of hard to claim it was a "one-off ordeal" or that "he's in the wrong place at the wrong time."

And a return to those late 80s/early 90s days...so we can see more of the brawls like against Texas in the Cotton Bowl and that infamous game versus Colorado. Yeah, fun to watch, but shows just how out of control a program can be.

I've been following this situation for the past year, including his court appearances. He really is a good kid, and I think thats why Miami is sticking with him. He had an anklebraclet on and was told to stay at home with his grandmother and he complied (other than a couple of times when the bracelet went off as he went outside to take the trash out). I think this will be a case of someone making the most out of a second chance. He's a smart kid and could be as good or better than Ray Lewis.

usc has to be seen as the favorite. i also like michigan, but i'm biased.

how is the ncaa football for the xbox? love last year's game, but with having to buy the rosters and everything, i've held off thus far.

anyone see that espn football is being sold this year for $20? odd...

get your xbox modded (chip plus a bigger hard drive). youll be able to simply ftp stuff like rosters or games to your xbox hard drive from your pc after that and you can play the games from your hard drive as well, which makes loading a lot quicker. i think you can also put stuff on your hard drive without modding the xbox by buying an action replay ...

its the first game of the ncaa series ive played and the first football game ive played on my xbox so i cant really compare it to previous games. game itself is very good. has some flaws (the amount of dropped balls even when my wr is wide open is insane) and an extremely annoying slowdown bug, which i solved by copying the game to my hd, but its still a good game overall. running is pretty easy and theres some very nice features like create-a-sign. give it a rent if youre unsure if youre gonna like it.

sega are selling all games (nfl, nba, nhl etc.) for $ 20 this year .... i think theyre trying to boost their popularity but ive read mixed reviews about nfl 2k5 ....

if it wasnt for the lefty glitch, mvp baseball 2004 would be one of the best sports game money can buy.

thanks. played it this weekend. my thoughts: running it is too easier, throwing it is insanely difficult.

He just got in today. :D

BTW, Shalala sent UM Alumni this letter explaining her decision.

University of Miami President Donna Shalala e-mailed a letter to all alumni registered with the University Tuesday morning explaining the University's decision to admit Willie Williams into school.

Here is a copy of the letter: July 27, 2004

I feel an obligation to communicate with the University community on an issue in the news.

In my experience, most higher educational institutions in this country consider institutional interests above any others in making decisions, despite protestations to the contrary that we are acting in the interests of our students, or faculty, or staff. In the case of our decision to admit Mr. Willie Williams, we probably should take a pass knowing the outcry might be damaging to our hard-earned reputation.

We choose not to in this case. Not because, as many would argue, we need his exceptional talent on the football team. Indeed, anyone who knows anything about UM football knows we have so much talent that we have the luxury of being more selective and continuing our dominance in the upper echelons of college football. We do exactly that every year; our coaches take character and the ability of a young man to successfully complete a course of study very seriously. They also know from history that it is hard to predict how well a highly-prized recruit will do or, God forbid, if an injury will destroy an athletic career. We choose to trust the experience of our coaches.

More importantly, we choose to support the recommendation of members of our faculty and staff who constituted our admissions group. They possess broad experience in reading complicated admissions applications, which in this case revealed a more accurate picture of a young man than what you have heard and read to date. Laws protecting the files of young people have resulted in inaccurate public reports--and sloppy conclusions by various so-called experts.

This is hardly a perfect applicant to the University. Oh, how we love perfection--perfect grades, perfect character, and perfect recommendations. Those are the easy ones! This young man is not perfect and has made some bad decisions--in friends, in behavior, etc. However, he is young, and his file reveals academic talent as well as the better-known athletic ability.

Mr. Williams is also one of us--a son of Miami. We have a special obligation, relationship, and commitment to the young people of our South Florida community. We want them to continue to think of us as a place of academic excellence and opportunity. My friends and advisors have suggested that some institution will take him if we don't; I believe that to be a true statement. However, our reading of his application is that he will have the possibility of a real future if he attends an institution that is both tough and demanding academically.

Therefore, as a condition of admission, we have placed the bar high for him. There will be academic conditions that he must meet to play football at Miami. Additionally, he will participate in a program that we provide for all athletes that includes mentoring, constructive counseling, and monitoring of their behavior--both on and off campus.

It may seem to you that in this case we are prepared to make a decision that, at least on the surface, seems in his interest and not ours as an institution. I believe that periodically having to make decisions like this makes us a better institution. Since it is your institution, I value your comments. Feel free to e-mail me at dshalala@miami.edu.

Sincerely,
Donna E. Shalala
President
