Codemasters has announced that it is at work to produce DiRT 2 on a variety of consoles in 2009. The follow-up to the critically applauded DiRT will be simultaneously released for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, PC, Nintendo DS, and Sony PSP. The sequel promises real-world environments and officially licensed rally cars and off-road vehicles. The Group N Subaru, a favorite vehicle from the first game, will be the first car players drive in the sequel. Codemasters also claims it will have online racing functionality and social features, though the company hasn't specified what those are quite yet.
Word of this follow-up comes just over a year after the series' namesake, Colin McRae, died in a tragic helicopter accident, and Codemasters intends to honor the racer by keeping his name on the brand. "Colin McRae was all about the speed, the excitement, and the entertainment of rally driving," said Gavin Raeburn, Codemasters senior executive producer. "He could do things with a car that no one else would and that's where we're taking the series. It will be a great tribute to an incredible champion." The decision to continue the series with McRae's name was made jointly between Codemasters and the McRae family.

Between MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, Score International Baja 1000, and Baja: Edge of Control, it seems that the rough world of off-road racing is becoming very fashionable on current-gen consoles. DiRT certainly got favorable reviews and hit big financially, so it will be interesting to see what happens in the competition when this sequel races onto the scene.

Is this in the Colin McCrae (spelling?) series?

I used to love those games. Colin McCrae 2 was the last one I played but it was

Can't believe he died:(

Nothing will come close to Richard Burns Rally, but if they make this one so the brake pedal needs to be actually used then I might buy it.
