The FPS returns to WWII with a new name and setting

Treyarch has revealed details on Call of Duty: World at War, previously known as Call of Duty 5. Unlike Call of Duty 1, 2 and 4, which were developed by Infinity Ward, World at War is being developed by Treyarch, the developer of Call of Duty 3, and will return The FPS franchise to its WWII roots. Treyarch also revealed to the Official Xbox Magazine that the next Call of Duty will, for the first time, support 4 player co-op over Xbox Live. IGN has contacted publisher Activision to see if that feature will make its way over to the other platforms, but no confirmation on that yet.

After Activision announced the next Call of Duty will feature a new military theater last May, fans may be disappointed to hear that the series is going back to WWII. However, Activision is remaining true to its word by taking the franchise to territories in the Pacific, with players fighting the Japanese. Parts of the game will also take place in Berlin as the Russians advance in on the Germans.

While Infinity Ward isn't developing Call of Duty: World at War, the FPS will still utilize Infinity Ward's award-winning Call of Duty 4 engine. Treyarch has also recieved a full year of development time over its previous Call of Duty 3 release.

Although no specific dates or platform confirmations were made, Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith said last May that the next installment of Call of Duty would make its way over to the DS, PC, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360 platforms before the end of the company's 2009 fiscal year, which has typically ended on March 31.

Infinity Ward and Treyarch are taking turns with the sequels. I'm bored of WWII, it has been done to death. Plus the weapons are weak and shite.

Most of the FPS fanboys on other forums seem to think COD5 will be shite, as it's not being developed by Infinity Ward.

Blah, the WWII thing has been way overdone now.

Besides infinity ward arent doing this one, so im not likely to bother with it. Ill skip this one and wait for number 6.

I like WWII games.

Call of Duty 4 was immense, so the bar has been set high...

One positive thing about it going back to WW2 is that it will be the first time that a Call of Duty game takes place in the pacific theatre. Shame Infinity Ward can't make this one though.

Well, a game development team can only push a title of this scale out every two years minimum. If people want one every year, then this is how it has to be done. I believe however (it was around a month or two ago) that IW are not happy about this, and Activision have said that COD5 (now not COD5) will be the last one not by IW. Whether this means that IW are going to set up a second team or future releases bearing the COD name will be every two years I don't know. Treyarch will probably carry on with the WWII thing under a different name (Word at War most probably).

This game will probably be shit

COD 6 will be amazing though

Whichever studio did CoD3 should stay away from this title ... although I'm not stoked about another WWII game, I hope atleast it'll be as good as CoD 1 & 2.

Atleast the graphics will be better than BiA:HH.

Ah, just read Weasty's post. I remember posting about CoD4 about how IW named all the files for CoD4 "CoD3", acting like the 3rd installment never happened.

Was COD 3 really that bad?

The WWII is a bit over done, and I don't find it as enjoyable as modern day combat. I still expect COD5 to be good, and better than anything MOH can offer. And at least it is set in the pacific, instead of a boring, mundane wasteland such as france.

First CoD 5 screens leaked

Screenshots of Activision's Call of Duty: World at War were supposed to be kept under lock and key until June 23, but someone didn't get that memo.

There are several hi-res screens of the game now on NeoGAF, after having leaked from the German official Xbox Magazine, and other sources.

We'll have loads more for your viewing pleasure soon, as well as a full eyes-on report, after having seen the game in action recently. Check back soon...

I'll probably stick with COD4 until number six is made, can't be arsed with WWII again.

im going to get this for the pc.

any recommendations which graphics card will be good enough for this ?

Leave WW2 alone. There are enough games set at this time. Liked the way they brought it modern day. WWII has been milked, no originality.

Call of duty should always be WW2.

I used to spend about 12 hours a day playing COD2 when I had finished college and wasn't working. I was fecking great at it, been in the same clan for 2 years aswell

You sad bastard lizzie

I agree.

I used to be in a clan too, I think we called SOS for a while before changeing to SOH but then CoD3 came out and the whole clan split....was a sad day

well thats your opinion. I personaly think it looks great.

in fairness though, compared to cod 4 the screen shots look awful....and given that call of duty3 was mediocre at the best of times then theres no real hope for this one

In what way? Do you not like the art style?

well given that ive just been playing crysis and metal gear everything has, granted, been seen through a shit filter

first of all I fecking hate how next gen now seems to be more shiny and monochrome. anything thats too bright to see is too dark.

that then just looks shit compared to the likes of

granted they could sort out that but if call of duty 3 is their example then.....

So it looks like it will focus on the Pacific theatre?

CoD 4 single player was great, multiplayer is too 'spray and play' for my liking. Project Reality is much better.

All the CoD games made by the Infinity Ward team have been ace, the Activision ones have been piss poor.
