Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson could be making plans to shake up his backroom staff by promoting Mike Phelan and bringing in Ricky Sbragia from Sunderland. Ferguson could see Sbragia as an ideal reserve team manager and that may release Phelan for senior duties. Phelan's input is highly rated by Ferguson and his knowledge would strengthen the bench alongside Portuguese assistant Carlos Queiroz.

Is this a vote of no confidence in Queiroz?

How feckin' ugly is he??

From SkySports:
Sunderland reserve team coach Ricky Sbragia is in talks with Manchester United about a coaching role at Old Trafford.

The Wearsiders have confirmed they have received an approach from United and that negotiations have begun.

Sir Alex Ferguson is reportedly keen to promote Mike Phelan to work with the first team alongside Portuguese assistant Carlos Queiroz.

And Sbragia, who has been at Sunderland for eight years, has been targeted by Ferguson to take Phelan's place as reserve team boss.

Ferguson has recently vowed to make the coaching set-up at United his legacy, notably employing Brazilian and Dutch coaches to work in the youth ranks.

But with United slipping behind Arsenal and Liverpool in the Premiership, first team affairs are fast becoming a major concern.

Former United midfielder Phelan is highly-rated by the Scot and has been fast-tracked through the ranks since rejoining the club as a coach four years ago.

However, United's Director of Communications Paddy Harverson refused to comment on behalf of the club regarding rumours of a backroom staff shake-up.

How good can he be though? Sunderland are shite.

Comments re new reserve team coach from Sunderland fan site:

...But if people are hell bent on displacing the responsibility for this season's poor showing, there is one point I would like to raise: RICKY SBRAGIA FOR FIRST TEAM COACH!
Brought in under the thrifty regime of Mick 4-5-1 Buxton, Sbragia is one of the few (in fact, the only, to my knowledge) members of the back room staff to survive the equally thrifty regime of Peter 'Hooooooof' Reid. And his results on the field have been nothing short of a bloody miracle.
Since then we've won the reserve league championship, missed out on it on the last day of the season against Leeds in front of thousands of fans at Bootham Crescent and, at worst, finished top half of the table. All with a core squad so young it would have a dewy eyed David O'Leary talking foetuses, not babies.
The Adrian Heaths of this world come and go - after his disastrous flirtation with managership at Bramall Lane, I seem to remember Heath sticking his oar into the New Ferens water for a while - but Sbragia has been connected to the reserves for, well, forever. At least since the club was founded in 1998 when the Stadium of Light was built. There's no doubt about it, Ricky Sbragia has done a very good job bringing the youngsters through.
