Nash leaving was sort of a shock and most think he was afraid of resigning only to be traded a month later. He also never wanted to leave Phoenix in the first place back in 97 or 98 when he was traded. But the Mavs have a good player in Marquis Daniels to takeover at PG (and he is better defensively than Nash). The club is high on draft pick Devin Harris as well. I still think a trade for Shaq could occur but I don't see Dirk going to LA. But if Kobe vaults to the Clippers (a huge mistake if he does so), I think Shaq stays another year with LA and Rudy T. Still, I could see a 3 team trade that sends Finley or Dirk and Dampier to LA, Walker to GS, and probably a few spares to make up cap differences. Maybe Dallas sends the rights to Podkolzine to LA or GS. Josh Howard could be involved too.
The thing with Walker is he has a high salary this season (like $14m) but is a FA in 2005 so the gaining team will have lots of free cap space. He's also a very good player as long as he's the first or second option in an offense. He can still be an allstar in the right team. Would either LA or GS take him knowing he can still contribute at a high level and projecting to next summer with approximately $14m of cap room available?
A Dirk to LA, Shaq to Dallas, Walker and Podkolzine to GS would make sense. I've heard the LAL front office wants to make a run for Yao Ming next summer and would need lots of cap space to do so. Trading Shaq (or him opting out next summer) would leave quite a bit of cap room. However, if Dirk is traded to LAL and Kobe resigns, the duo would eat up about $30m in cap room. Not sure when Fox's contract ends, but he's worth like $5-6m. Payton will be a FA next summer, that's another $5m o/a. The Lakers could take Walker knowing that they will save $13.7m this year (Shaq - Walker's salary) and then another $14m in free room next season thus making a run at Yao.
Another twist could see Dallas drop out of the Shaq sweepstakes and go for Dampier. Also, there is mention of signing Ostertagg (Dallas native) and maybe a brusing PF. One thing for sure - Dallas needs to play defense consistently. Daniels will be an upgrade at PG, defensively, but will lose considerable offensive ability as well as leadership. However, the club has high hopes on him. He could be another Chauncy Billups. Ostertagg, Bradley, and Podkolzine could be a "3 headed monster" version that clogged the middle for Chicago in the 90s. Ostertagg would immediately improve the shot blocking and give Dallas a legitimate defensive low post presence.
It's going to be an exciting summer (and I'm not a NBA fan, but I love to watch all the offseason stuff in sports).
