Is it possible to close the website to members only to reduce the traffic or whatever when the caf goes tits up like it has the last half hour? Or would there be any other similar solution?

Would be pretty handy.

Yeah, would be lovely.

I'd be in favour of this, when traffic gets so high you have to log in to view the forums. Thing is, I expect a lot of the traffic is from existing Caf members anyway.

Would make sense, though that is assuming it isn't members loading that is causing the problem as well

Id say a significant portion of the traffic was from fans of other clubs wanting to see what we made of the whole thing, which is fair enough. But when it stops us(and them also) being able to read the caf, it makes no sense not to close it to members only(unless Ive got it wrong or its not possible/plausible for other reasons).

This issue gets raised every year or so. It's never been implemented because I believe that (a) it's fairly difficult to implement, and (b) the Caf is kept running pretty much solely through advertising revenue, and the vast majority of its traffic (and thus revenue) are from guests - not registered users.

Yeah, I thought that might be a problem, but dont RAWK do it? It'd only be for an hour max Id say, and it doesnt happen weekly, only after a bad loss.

It's twice weekly recently to be fair

Isn't it a self-limited problem? How long do these episodes tend to last? I know when I try to load a forum and "it cannot take the strain" I tend to come back after a few minutes and is usually fine - instead of frantically pressing F5 when I'm fully aware nothing has been written in that time frame. Setting an artificial limit to one-hour could possibly lead to a whole lot of guests coming to try and visit the site again after said hour has passed and the cycle repeating itself.

Its technically possible, but it would be counterintuitive in that it would limit the amount of people who could post.

If it was closed to members only, how would that limit the amount of people who could post?

Its already closed to members only. Only members can post now, as opposed to "guests" who can browse the threads without signing up. Guests have the option of becoming members, which is not likely to change as it would stagnate the membership "gene pool".

We need the revenue to keep the place going and without guests we would have to close.

If we deleted the amount of 'Perspective' threads, the Caf would run like Usain Bolt.

I doubt it'd need like an hour, just close it for 15 minutes at the end of matches for members only. It's just other fans want to see the immediate reaction to a loss so they come rushing in, but if they see it doesn't work right away they'll probably get discouraged and just not bother until a bit later.

But if the site is down due to too many users, no revenue will be generated at that time anyway.

At least if it was running for members (and as many guests as the system could handle) money would be generated from those visitors. Or is that what already happens, the system just let's in as many as it can? I was under the impression that, at times of overload, it's down for everyone.

It is rarely down for very long. We are considering making the general private for various different reason though.

That is manual process so it isn't really a very good option.
