Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed interest in Lyon midfielder Clement Grenier.

The 22-year-old has been likened to Samir Nasri in his style, and is rated at around £8million by his club.

Grenier, who scored on Sunday night against Rennes in front of Gunners scouts, came close to quitting the Stade Gerland last summer.

However, he seized on injuries to key man - including former Gunners target Yoann Gourcuff - to make 27 appearances, notching seven goals and providing eight assists.

And now the France Under 21 international could be set to earn a move to the Premier League.

Wenger told French programme Telefoot: 'We are following him. His intelligence of play pleases me. He has interesting qualities. He reminds me of Nasri.'

The Lyon President doesn't seem to think £8M will cut it, he wants the same price that Bayern got for Gotze.

I've never heard of him before but one just doesn't get a compilation with Gladiator music and not be a talent.

I was literally just about to make a thread on this guy, as obviously we have been linked since the close of the season.

Has anyone watched him play?

Typically Alaus has come out all guns blazing, saying he is worth as much as Goetze. Good luck with that, considering he only has a year left to run on his contact.

Seems really good at set pieces, almost Juninho-esque at times (two beautiful ones these past two weeks) and seems a real talent for the future, yeah. I haven't seen him that much myself but my friends who watch Lyon on a regular basis are adamant he'll make it at the highest level.

And indeed, typical Aulas reaction, but that probably means he'll let him go. Though knowing Wenger, he'll probably be too stingy to go over the reported 8M (which seems pretty low in fairness), tap up the player, get him to sign no extension and sign him on a free next year.

Cracking player, hope he stays. Looking forward to more of him next season with Benzia also getting more time if LiLo leaves. Aulas is asking for 31MP apparently, but it will be a big loss to lose a player like him.

That's encouraging to hear from an Arsenal fans' point of view. Is it true he only has another year to run on his contract?

Also on a side note, if rumours are to be believed Arsenal are also interested in Ganalons - how do you rate him?

He is a fearless, tidy and win the ball type of midfielder. It says something that at his age he's the captain of Lyon.A pure product of their academy so I'm not sure if Arsenal will play the very inflated transfer fee Aulas will ask of them

Lyon tend to get a lot of money for their players, I doubt £8 million will be enough.

Another promising player, very effective in his role. He was made captain of the club recently and doesn't look like he has many intentions to leave. Both these players are highly rated, so is Benzia.

Looks like he's another player who can shoot from distance with two feet, they are always handy.

Interesting views from another French forum from a guy who has watched him all season. I'm translating his post :

Grenier is just the flavor of the moment player because he's scored some crucial goals in the last 5 games, including 2 Juninho-esque free kicks and a beautiful volley 3 seconds before the final whistle.
And he also has on his side that with Gonalons he was one of the leaders of the April "revolt" when everything was going bad. He's clearly more of a leader than Gourcuff.
And therefore has the ego that goes along with it. Which can be an advantage or an inconvenience according to how he uses it.

I find it hard to understand how, in a team game, to grade players, we only keep their individual efforts, as prestigious as they may be.
Grenier has been at best non-existent, at worst guilty of a lot of lapses in his collective game (defensive work at walking pace, bad passing being his main problems), usually salvaging his games by a few flashes of individual brilliance, often from set pieces (corners at the beginning of the season, free kicks at the end). I don't remember a game where we could say to ourselves at the end "Wow, great 90 minutes by Grenier!".

Promising and progressing, that's for sure. But there's still a lot of work to be done to reach the next level.

Of course, I would rather that this progression carries on with us, because if he carries on like this, he can explode in the two next years and become the player that the media are portraying at the moment. It might as well be with Lyon.

A French guy with an ego. Sounds like trouble. Also sounds like a Wenger buy. He's got a thing for players with big egos.

He is a great player this kid, so fecking intelligent on the ball.Much better than the current Gourcuff.

What happened to Gourcuff he was amazing with Blanc at Bordeaux he scored some amazing goals and was the best player in France for a year or two. Now he is forgotten at almost 27.

Personally i think Gonalons is the better prospect. Didn't Wenger want to sign him as well?

Bad knee injury + the fact the couple of seasons when he was at his best with Bordeaux were probably him overperforming. But he's played like 15 games this season, his injury has affected him badly when he'd be at least a more than decent midfielder.

It really does sound like how a French person would say 'Grinner'.

I find it funny that the Gooners are cracking one off over this signing whilst sneering about United potentially bagging the far superior and PL experienced Fellaini.

Double standard fecks.

There's no double standard. We've seen Fellaini and he isn't top4 stuff, the frog may be.
