"United midfield trio in Houllier's dream team

THREE Manchester United midfielders - Roy Keane, David Beckham and Ryan Giggs - have been nominated by Gerard Houllier, the Liverpool manager, for UEFA's "Dream Team", drawn from the first 10 years of the Champions League. UEFA's technical director, Andy Roxburgh, put forward Peter Schmeichel, who won the 1999 Champions League with United.
UEFA yesterday announced the recommendations of Houllier and Roxburgh which will be mulled over by other leading coaches, such as Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger, Ottmar Hitzfeld and Fabio Capello, before European football's ruling body unveil their all-star XI in advance of the European Cup final in Glasgow on May 15.
Building from the back, Houllier suggested Oliver Kahn ahead of Schmeichel, Fabien Barthez and Edwin van der Sar. Roxburgh favoured Schmeichel because of the Dane's "enormous charisma, presence and ability". Reading from the right, Houllier's back-four comprised Mauro Tassotti, Franco Baresi, Paolo Maldini and Roberto Carlos. Houllier acknowledged that centre-back is not Maldini's usual position - "but he is outstanding wherever he plays". Roxburgh omitted Tassotti and Roberto Carlos for Christian Panucci and Marcel Desailly, both two-time winners of the European Cup.
Houllier's midfield was "the highly gifted Beckham, the fluid Frank Rijkaard, midfield leader and big-match winner Roy Keane and the flying Ryan Giggs". Surprisingly, Houllier contemplated including Eric Cantona as an attacking midfielder.
Roxburgh, who praised "Rijkaard (a Rolls Royce of a player) and Fergie's wing-wizards Giggs and Beckham", left out Keane for Zinedine Zidane. Stefan Effenberg, Luis Figo and Didier Deschamps all received honourable mentions from Roxburgh and Houllier.
In attack, Houllier pondered the merits of Jari Litamanen, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Giovane Elber before settling on Raul, Real Madrid's "prolific scorer". Alongside Raul, Houllier chose "the exciting Andrei Shevchenko, who has been a star and prolific goalscorer for Dinamo Kiev and AC Milan".
Raul got the nod from Roxburgh, who preferred Patrick Kluivert as the Spaniard's partner. "For nearly nine years, Kluivert has been a prolific scorer in the Champions League," Roxburgh said. Others briefly considered included Alen Boksic, Gianluca Vialli, Rivaldo and George Weah.
