Manchester City appeared to be continuing their ambitious summer acquisition programme last night, with Benfica's Argentinian right winger Eduardo Salvio the subject of a €30m (£25.8) bid from the club, according to several respected sources in Portugal.

City have not yet responded to inquiries about the bid but Benfica are already understood to have begun the task of replacing the 23-year-old. The Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira Ferreira is understood to be asking €40m (£34.4m) though a compromise would appear likely.
City, who this week secured the signature of Alvaro Negredo from Sevilla for around £16m, with £4m add-ons, are also close to securing Stevan Jovetic for £22.4m plus add-ons.
Salvio is a similar player to Jesús Navas, the winger, who completed a £17m move, rising to £21.5m in add-ons, from Sevilla to City last month. A pure right winger, he is known for mixing defensive duties with an ability to score 15 goals a season. He played every game last season for Benfica.
New manager Manuel Pellegrini left City’s South African training camp to spend a few days back home in Chile yesterday. The 59-year-old unexpectedly took a flight out of Durban early this morning, with a personal issue to attend to in Santiago. It meant assistant boss Brian Kidd will be in charge when City took on Amazulu in Durban last night.

Two right wingers, two strikers and a CM. City are done with transfer foreplaying.

Another €30+ million signing, taking their total to 5 this summer if this happens. Ridiculous really. Surely they'll get rid of a few players now to balance it out a bit.

Oh lord. So what, 4 seasons they have had big money now? Yet they STILL haven't managed to bring any youth through and are STILL relying on spending crazy money. fecking shambles.

Don't despair, we are about to conduct 'IMPORTANT TRANSFER BUISINESS' ourselves.

 Jesus, this seems a bit unnecessary. A few must be leaving surely..

They should buy another centre back instead

City are essentially sticking two fingers up to financial fair play, which I find quite funny.

Why would they spend almost £50m on two fully developed players that play in the same position in the same summer?

Another player they can buy and then sell 3 years later after sacking their manager and letting the new one have a squillion quid.

City doing their typical, well planned, transfer window, fling a bucket of shit and buy whatever player it sticks to routine.

I know it's hypothetical but let's put a City fan hat on for a sec. Would you be happy with City's signings this summer if you're a City fan? They sure go for quantity, but I don't know about quality or squad needs. It's probably like us buying two Garays and two Baineses.

A lot of people here are underestimating Jovetic and Navas. I havent seen enough of Negredo or Fernandinho to comment on them but the former two are going to play a big part in their upcoming campaign. They tried to sign Isco, Falcao and Cavani but it didnt work out. The players they are buying are definitely upgrades. For example Jovetic, if he is played on the left wing, like I think he would, is better than Nasri and Fernandinho should definitely be better than Barry because who isnt?

So the point Im trying to make is even though they arent signing these "marquee" players, Pelligrini is getting players that not only add depth to the squad but also improve the quality of their squad. And he isnt like Mancini, who last year bought Rodwell, Garcia and Sinclair just for the sake of making up the numbers but not really to improve the quality of the squad.

Will they be able to have enough homegrown players in the squad at this rate, and still be able to fit all of these players in their squad though? Maybe Pellegrini isnt aware of that rule...?

Another signing, that takes there total spend over 100 million this window now doesn't it?

The 8 home grown players is not a necessity. The rule is that you cannot have more than 17 players who are not home grown.

Really can't see this happening at all. The same guy that Atletico Madrid sold for less than half of that only a year ago. He's a decent player but nowhere near good enough to command that kind of fee, but then again it is City we're talking about. I wouldn't be worried in the slightest about him. Gaitan is better, and a lot on the caf don't seem to think he's good enough for United.

The difference between all these purchases and previous ones is that Pellegrini actually knows what he's doing, unlike Hughes and Mancini who just wanted to buy everyone they could.

People talking about fees I'm not sure really get the point. Yes, in terms of market value that's way to much for a player of Salvio's quality, who as far as I know is good but nowhere near world class. But City don't give two shits about market value. Like PSG and Monaco, to them money is a limitless resource. Market value only has an effect when people care about money. City don't see a player and go "right, I'd like him, how much can we afford to bid?" they say "right, I'd like him, let's just chuck increasing amounts of money at his club until we get him". Their bank balance is irrelevent to them. What's important to them is that come the close of the transfer window they have all the players they wanted, and they don't give a shit whether those players cost them £10million or £100million. It literally doesn't matter to them.

City have refused to buy quite a few players this Summer because of their cost.

I beg to differ. The last two transfer windows have shown that they have started giving a shit. Otherwise, Falcao or Cavani would be released in a City shirt not Negredo.

Have they? Fair enough if so, but I must admit I've not seen anything along those lines. I don't follow transfer news that closely, though, so I'm not saying you're wrong. I do know that the "big three" they were after simply chose other clubs for various reasons (Isco, Falcao and Cavani). I'm not sure that means that City decided they didn't want to spend the moeny touted, or were just rejected in favour of somewhere else.

My point still stands, though. £25million for Salvio would be obscene, but they don't give a shit.

I don't know what happened with Cavani, but Falcao chose Monaco because (a) he's a Mendes client, and (b) Monaco will let him leave on the cheap for Madrid in a year or two. City wouldn't.

They refused to pay the fees PSG and Monaco eventually paid for Cavani and Falcao.

Yes they overpay for players but it's not to the extent where by they'll let the clubs they're buying off charge them whatever the hell they want to.

Seems like thats exactly what happened with Negredo.
