City close on Toure deal

Sky Sports sources understand Manchester City are close to agreeing a £16million deal with Arsenal for Kolo Toure.

The central defender is to return from the club's pre-season training camp in Austria to undergo talks with City officials and manager Mark Hughes.

City reportedly failed in a bid to sign the Ivory Coast international in January but appear to be close to landing their man this time around.

When quizzed on Toure's future on Monday, Arsenal chief Arsene Wenger said: "We'll see what's happening in the next 24 hours."

City boss Hughes is eager to add defensive reinforcements to his ranks having already pepped up his attack this summer, via the high profile additions of Carlos Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor and Roque Santa Cruz.

Bids for Chelsea captain John Terry and Everton stopper Joleon Lescott have failed to bear fruit, with Toure seen as a viable alternative.

£41m for Toure & Adebayor? Wenger must be pissing himself. Toure hasn't been good for a few seasons and Adebayor, although immensely talented, has only had one really good season.

I agree Arsene will be quietly pleased,41m for that pair is madness

The question is whether Wenger is actually going to use the money to strengthen the squad, or give Ponderos another chance...

I read today that Hangeland is stalling on a new contract at Fulham. Hm.

Saw speculation today that he is being linked with Arsenal

How much would City have to offer for Wenger to accept a bid for Fabregas?

Fabregas is not for sale, dead wood only.

You guys were spunking over Adebayor but now he's "deadwood". You write off opposition players and over rate yours beyond belief. Why don't you come back and look down at other teams' players ONCE you win the league?;)

Oh pete, it feels good to be league winners, but you guys should have that by next year right?:p

another bit of experience gone out of the arsenal squad..............

Toure at his best would be a good addition to what is still City's weakness- its defence.

Excellent signing for City. He and Dunne will work brilliantly together at centre back.

Arsenal supporters may act as if they've done a great bit of business off loading Toure and Adebayor for a huge sum of money, but the truth is their squad has been weakened considerably by losing two excellent players.

This could be an exciting season in terms of the race to break for top 4, what with Arsenal and Liverpool both currently going into the season with squads that are far from strong looking.

Hope your new players play well at the African Cup this year City....

Adebayor had one fantastic season and we spunked, but then he tried to move and he has sucked since.

41 Million for the pair is fantastic business.

exactly, you can say the players arent worth £41m, but fact is, Arsenal have been in a pretty vulnerable position lately, and losing their first choice striker and one of their precious few solid defenders is not the way they are going to solidify.

Frankly, this move simply concerns me in regard to City. We have been resigned to the fact that Arsenal arent going to be major contenders, but City are still something of a wildcard going into next season. We have laughed and mocked at their squad full of strikers, but if they are just going to go around splashing silly money (and they can) on every single position, whats to stop them having an extremely good set of players (although i dont want to say team) by the start of the season?
Lets not forget, City do have a limitless supply of money, and operating profitably will be a long way down their list of priorities. The arabs dont give a shit if they have to stump up for a yard long wagebill, and have a 50-man squad, and have a small army competing for every single position - they dont have a care in the world. If City are attracting players who have previously been successful for the big 4 (Tevez, Adebayor and Toure for a start, and thats just this summer) then we need to start taking them seriously.

From Arsenals point of view, I cant see the sense in selling players to the very club that is going to be banging on their doors trying to get that Champions League place and break into the big 4.

Its not fantastic business if City replace Arsenal in the big 4. That extra champions league revenue is pretty significant, not to mention the fans uproar.

Excellent signing for City. He and Dunne will work brilliantly together at centre back.

Did you see Dunne play last season? He was terrible for most of it. In fact both of them had really poor seasons and are not really a partnership to inspire fear into any team on recent form. Lescott would be a far better signing, and Onuoha was the most impressive City centre back last year.

Arsenal ain't gonna win the league with their squad as it stands. Too weak in defence and midfield. I'd fancy playing them at the moment.

Excellent - is it at OT? Prepare to be fecked if so.

Manchester City defender Kolo Toure is reportedly interested in a move to Paris St Germain.

Toure returned last month after serving a six-month suspension for failing a drug test, playing the full 90 minutes of City's Carling Cup win over Birmingham and the Champions League loss to Bayern Munich. He has made only one appearance from the bench since then and was an unused substitute in City's 6-1 Barclays Premier League thrashing of Manchester United.

"I would be interested because of the competition there currently is at City," Toure is quoted as saying by RMC Sport.

"If the name of Paris comes it will not be like previous years.

"Now if they call me, I would listen to what they say. Given the very good players there are there, it really makes you want to go there, it's clear.

"I know I'm not the only player interested, there are other players who really want to play for PSG.

"It's not just for the money, but also because we see that there are very good investors who want to move the club to produce good football and win trophies."

What a twat. He complains about competition at City then in the same breath says he wants to head to Paris where all the good players are going.

Shell of himself any way. City can afford better and won't care much if he goes.

Glad to see our Rio still trying under increased competition. At least he has heart.

eh Drifter, next time just make a new thread instead of bumping a two year old one with profanity in the title, will ya?

Did you edit the title to the current one Dwazza? If so, bravo. Gold star.

Will shitty even give a feck if he leaves?

Surprisingly Joleon Lescott has been very good for them since Toure's drug ban.
