Ajax technical director Leo Beenhakker has expressed his admiration for star defender Cristian Chivu before admitting he may have to be sold to balance the books.

Chivu is a reported target of European Champions Real Madrid and Beenhakker, a former coach at the Bernabeu, concedes that the 21-year-old Romanian international may go if the price is right.

"If Real come in with a concrete offer and are willing to pay the price we will talk about a transfer. But also if the bid is a bit lower we can talk. Many clubs, not just Ajax, need the money."

Beenhakker is hopeful though that Chivu, rated by the Amsterdammers in the 20million euro bracket (£13m), will stay in Holland.

"Cris is a complete player. He has everything, he's physically strong, can play one on one, he is fast, strong in the build up and has a very good shot. And above that he is still young," he told Spanish paper AS.

"I can't remember any central defender who was so experienced at just 21. Off the field, he is just as professional. In that aspect I would give him an A+."

Frankly I haven't got lot of chances to watch him play so not much comments on his ability ... but I do reckon we need a fast CB ... to counter whoever big guy he will be partnering with ...
I remember Chivu is also a LB ... so that will be very useful as a cover ... just like Mickie ...

13mil sounds a bit high though ... but frankly I would rather see that then 30mil for a single Rio !!! ... that's just too risky ..... . and we will be dried up right after that !! ... no way ...

I have only watched him in full action during Euro 2000 and euro games. Otherwise only managed to catch a few snatches of him on the dutch league highlights. Seems like excellent quality.

Lots of positive feedback about him though - eg Roy rates him highly.

IMO, it would be worth going for him or Ayala if we don't get Rio. Ayala is probably the better defender but Chivu has age and versatility on his side (LB and CB roles).

I've only seen him play against Celtic but he was excellent, a great prospect. He's a bit small but has great pace/skill/technical ability. He's captain of his country since he was 20 and will be up there with the Netsa's/Cannavarro's of this world in a couple of years.

As a LB if Lizarazu can do it so can he. Size is hardly important. Anyway when you see half of these footballers in the flesh you realise they're midgets. Or perhaps I'm just tall.

I saw most of Ajaxs' league games last season(Chivu at CB) and what impressed me was how consistent he was, captain and only 21- says something of his charachter.
Technically hes very good, makes very few mistakes, and though he is not the tallest, he is strong- has plently of lower body strength- never saw him shoved off the ball.
He is definately United quality, and he plays LB too, but I don't see him as an immediate solution.

Chivu is one of the biggest talents currently playing in the dutch league. He's highly rated by the dutch media and Koeman said he'll become one of the best players in the world in a dutch magazine... he wants to take Chivu with him to his next club (Koeman openly admitted that he wants to end up in Barcelona at some stage of his managing career). Koeman also likes him because Chivu isn't a party beast and is very professional and well behaved.

I think he's one that Fergie will fancy very much ... good discipline ... and you know the gaffer always emphasize in "character" .. I think Chivu has it definitely ... else to lead the country at 20-year old that's really crazy !! ... to me he's those "little giant" type .. huge in presence instead of physical ... But he ain't that small IMO ... should be more or less the same size as Gary ... of which I believe he's even faster in some sense ...

Among all the rumours running now ... frankly I am only interested in the following 3 really :

Ayala
Chivu
Duff ...

Others .. somehow I have some negative stuff on them ... Not going down my wishlist anymore ... even though I believe mine are very sensible types ... but well, say it too many times now ... till it really happens then ..

Chivu and Ayal suit me just fine. But Nesta is comming.
And so is Duff so
Duff, Nesta and Chivu would suit me just fine :)
