This sort of thing. A goal that Rooney dedicated most of his United career to scoring, but only pulled off once (I think?)

A sort of back spin, lofted shot from around the edge of the box. They’re actually my favourite type of goal. They happened fairly regularly in the 90s/00s (and earlier?) but seem to have completely dried up recently.

Can anyone think of any recent examples? If not, why not?

Also, any classics of the genre you particularly enjoyed?

Love chipped goals, such a beautiful thing. Always conjures memories of Eric with his collars up and chest puffed out.

Hardly see anyone attempt chipped efforts these days. I think it’s a combination of two primary factors. Firstly, the game has become tactical at the expense of beauty, if it’s all about percentages players are going to be told not to attempt the chip, especially from distance. Secondly, keepers are plain better than back in the day. Better positioning, more athleticism, makes them tougher to lob.

I mean the Cantona one is the correct answer.

Also Falcao against City in the Champions League 2017

May not be the most important factor, but I think keepers are taller (generally) than they used to be, making the shot a lower percentage option

Love the little smirk from David James as Rooney clipped that one over him.

Can't have this without Totti.

Or Beckham vs West Ham

with modern ball making technology, the balls are actually too round to be chipped.

I would guess the reduction is down to a combination of better goalkeeping, higher defensive lines and pressing systems providing less opportunity for chips and players being coached to make better finishing choices.

For example, take Beckham's goal below. Leaving aside the absolute oceans of space between players, if you were coaching him on the most effective way to finish that chance now you'd be telling him to bring the ball closer to goal even after his miscontrol, rather than taking the chance from that position.

But even with that, they do still happen from time to time, even if not as much as I remember them happening in the 90's particularly.

Seems like they happen every five minutes in the Bundesliga.

All the balls have chips in them these days, so technically all of them are chipped goals

Raul used to use a lot of lobs and chips.Couldn't find a comp with just those and with quality, dunno why.
Totti as mentioned before and that great vid above.
Di Maria has some beauties.
And obviously Maradona and Messi

PD: couldn't actually find some more recent comp of lobs and chips with great quality.

Just some classics:

Nico Gonzalez scored this last week. Was surprised as chips are a lot less common now.

A lot of the usuals have been mentioned but someone who gets underrated when it comes to this is Andy Cole he had a few lovely ones.

Legit feel goalies are built different and it makes it harder.

Don't know about taller, think they've actually started to shrink back down a little in more recent times after everyone was after 6ft 6 goalies for a while, but a bit more lanky/skinner in general. They don't look as broad or physically strong for the most part. It should make them quicker at moving their feet, including to get back to attempted chips and perhaps springier too or more agile, centre of gravity not as low.

Onana looks a bit more like a typical 90s/00s 'keeper in his build but nobody has chipped him yet that I can remember.

Edit: Forgot this one in a friendly.

We don’t see goals like this these days as football is boring. You get more highly thought of if you can run 12ks per 90 minutes as opposed to having the technical ability to deliver something like the above.

I’d wager a player like Ronaldinho wouldn’t even graduate these days as he’d be considered lazy.

I’ve always said to my mates : anyone who can score a chipped goal is technically an excellent footballer. Still stands true.

Please don’t post O Shea’s Arsenal goal
