Chinese star quits to take coaching classes at Man Utd
Chinese star Su Maozhen has quit club and international football to attend coaching classes at Manchester United at the invitation of Sir Alex Ferguson.
"I contacted Sir Bobby (Charlton) and he recommended me to Sir Alex (Ferguson) who warmly invited me to attend FA classes," said Su, who was a student at Manchester United's youth academy in the late 1980s.
Su was told by his club Shandong Luneng that his contract would not be renewed next season, the Xinhua news agency said.
Su, part of China's World Cup squad this year, was considered one of the most talented Asian strikers of his generation, scoring 65 goals for Luneng and 27 for his country.
He was named Chinese Footballer of the Year in 1999 when he led his club to the league and cup double.
