"Cheating, the English and the Spanish - an unfinished debate"

It's a cultural difference to be sure - football is theatre and good acting is appreciated as much as good skill. Or, perhaps, it is another skill. If you think the Brits are against it, try watching in North America - where men are men and feigning injury to gain advantage is worse than using video cameras to record your opponent's strategy* (*unless you're Lebron, who has made it an art form)

Personally having grown up in North America I've been conditioned that subterfuge is the worst thing you can do on a sports pitch, so my instinct is that if someone wants to pretend I hit them in the face to gain an advantage, I should be allowed to hit them in the face so they can earn it. But I understand that's my bias, and latin players have their own bias.

The real issue here is that referees apply the rules differently, in the same sport. That's just ridiculous, and an indictment of how screwed up the sport is. In a given week, we could play a League 1 side and have the sh*t kicked out of us, with the ref letting everything bar GBH go, then a Prem match, where dangerous fouls are called up more frequently, then a CL match where sneezing in the vague direction of a player is a yellow card offense.

Both sides are guilty of exaggeration and stereotyping. The Spanish league accepts playacting more whereas the English league does so with thuggery. Both have all those qualities but people just go over the top in their criticism of the other side.

There is more playacting in Spain although it has gone down dramatically in recent years. It mostly happens in heated derbys and big games. But is not as bad as it used to be. Please do not think everyone in Spain is like Mascherano or Alves. Watch other teams also. In England there is much less but i also think they are better at disguising..

Do they have a school for this s..t in London ? I saw Ramsey do the same s..t vs Leicester rolls over, looks in pain and then just stands up and complains to the ref . Btw how many rolls was that ?:wenger:

I think normally four rolls gets the other player a yellow, six for a red.

For me it is normal and part of the game, as a good fight in a derby. I agree with a bit of exaggeration to get a card but I do not like things like this , where there is not even contact and the player pretends to be hurt

Maybe I'm wrong but I am also in favor of diving to cause penalty . In the years being a ticket holder of two different teams I can not imagine a nice reaction from the fans if a player doesn´t dive if he has a nice chance. It would be treated as naive. However some players never try to cheat. I remember that Ronaldo was very well considered for referees in Spain since he never dived and for this he used to get many penalties and nice free kicks.
It is a challenge between a good defender who can intimidate the striker and a good striker who can fool everyone.
Keep in mind that in Spain the players are more used to soft referees in which the offenses are punished more severely. On the radio and television often repeat the phrase "referees of European competitions ", when some obvious faults are not whistled or the players can´t talk so often with the referee to discuss things.

Those laughing at the Chamberlain gif. This is the challenge, which damaged his knee ligaments and pretty much ended his season and may put him out of the Euros too. This tough guy attitude here is silly.

That Busquets incident had contact, he just exaggerated it. Definitely not red worthy, but you can tell the difference. He gained a false reputation out of it as the biggest diver in football, partly his fault, but those who follow La Liga and Barcelona know better. Ronaldo never dives? Which one are you talking about. His rep between refs in La Liga isn't that good at all.

@Brown Toothpick I mean Ronaldo Nazario. You are right,Busquets got a wrong reputation.I can't imagine him doing that nowadays.I should have added a photo of Alves :D

What's wrong with Chamberlain rolling around?
It's quite natural to do that when you're in pain, I thought. Even just stubbing ones toe usually causes them to hop around etc.

Ox is out for the season from that tackle...

And the foul on Ramsey that you're referring to was horrendous, should have been a straight red. Drinkwater's apologised tbf.

It's strange, sense would say the last thing you want to do is roll around and risk further damage, but in the moment instinct kicks in and that's what happens.

Admittedly though, I'd love a gif made where he keeps on rolling right along and off the end of the pitch and into the barrier.

It's nothing to do with a tough guy attitude, it's just funny watching a player roll over 8 bloody times!

Why does he stand up after rolling around like he was just shoot with a sniper rifle ? Is rolling around the ground a custom at ars school ?

Think it's a combination of tough guy mentality and people who don't play sports/football.
