Glazer get to a after drink brawl with Shittu, bot
Edgy edgy .. think everybody is edgy now .... things just didn't seems to move ...

The highest possibilities now being :
Rio - 30mil (crazy $ !!)
Duff - 10mil+Yorkie (no.9)
Finnan - 5mil (I reckon Fergie will definitely sign a fullback)

Welll ... that will be 45mil + Yorkie .... It's a bit too much for me personnaly and I think it will be the same for PLC .. even with the Nike deal ...

So ... what if things never happen at all ?? ... no players come in ?! ... gosh I think that's absolutely no no ... looking at the players that have left OT rank ... the team is very thin currently without enough cover IMO ...

Just a crazy shout here - if the 45mil above is no way near our budget - my mind say below is acceptable for a start at least :

Ayala - 12mil
Rebrov - 5mil (don wow ... he's the nippy type that could help us)
Coly - 4mil (max. I would think)

21mil in total ... that's even lesser that 1 Veron himself and I suppose this will definitely be ok ... and it leave rooms for Fergie to play with $ in the later part of season ... strengthening for CL 2nd round or whatever ..

I still fail to understand why a right back is supposedly somewhere top of our list. We have both Nevilles and Brown. It's left back that we're weak, as we only have Silvestre really (It's Phil's weaker side).

Rebrov hasn't really set the Premiership alive, while who knows how Ayala and Coly would do.

Ferdinand's age makes his possible deal the most attractive. It's an amazing long term prospect and thats what we need at the back.

Well, Amir, I wouldn't put Brown in that category, he's made to play in the centre IMO, he's to tall for a lateral defender. What we need is a fullback that can fill the shoes of Irwin. One that can play on both sides. Yes, we have P Neville, but he's a utility player, nothing more. Silvestre is our left back, G Nev our right back.

I would like to see a really good right back that can play on the left when required and push G Neville into the CB mix.

I think that Gary Neville is a fantastic CB. But as SAF as always said though, his height lets him down.

But a good defender is worth 30m?

I've said many a time before, play Brown and O'Shea and save the cash for another day, but SAF is obviously keen, so, I trust him.

A player who can play as LB and RB would be just fine. Except for the old irishman on a free transfer, who else is there?

Obviously we trust SAF and I am not doubting that Rio is quality:Would you say that Rio is £20 million more of a player than Stam.Personally I don't think so.There are players out there as good as him that would cost less and give us more money to strengthen in other areas..Just my opinion

There are a lot of considerations to what a player is worth (to us) than just how good he is now. Is Ferdinand twice the player Jaap is? No, but he could be the backbone for our defence for 10 years+.

Considering all the chopping and changing thats been going on at the back since 96, I don't think 30m would be badly spent here if Fergie believes he's the right player.

That's the problem! I can't think of a single one.

I think this 35m quid has come out of the air from the media. It's not going to be that. As I said, 10m more than Stam would be a fair price, what with his age, and my feeling that he will develop into a better CB than Stam. If he's put on a 6yr contract he'll be with us for the rest of his career basically.

That said, I think 27m is a fair price, but with the problems Leeds have with money, I expect the deal to be cose to 23m. IMO.

I said earlier today that I thought it'd be around £25m - £28m but now I think it'll be more.

I reckon not mate. It's all media fabrication IMO.

27m would be a fair price. But it might be possible for less.

I along with many others didn't see Ferdinand as a 17mil defender when he joined Leeds, but hes' shown his quality.

There are a few factors affecting the 'inflated' price IMO-

Pure ability(highlighted as arguably the best CB at the WC), he is in a select group.

Age/maturity- mentally he is ready for the top, and agewise he has 10 years of football in the engine.

Leadership/charisma- big clubs need big charachters to drive them on.

English- gives continuity, he is already playing well in the PL, and is pally with the United boys through the England setup.

Supply and Demand basically, Demand- United desperately need this kind of player, Supply- there are very few around. And of course everyone knows we have the money.

if you want a cheaper option than rio ferdinand then shouldn't overlook Alpay at Aston Villa. hes a very solid defender with a bit more pace than Blanc (well lets face it who hasn't) hes strong, very good in the air, had a fantastic world cup and is making noises about wanting to leave Villa. as for a left back wayne bridge is one of the most promising out there and Southhampton could be tempted for about 8m or so. so you could have a centre back and a left back for half what u think u should pay for ferdinand.

i bet you wish u had had a sniff at sol campbell last summer now don't you!

1. Finnan can play both RB and LB.
2. Roberto Carlos can play both RB and LB, tho' I'd prefer he didn't come to Utd.
3. Other LBs: Sorin, Bridge, Coco
4. Chivu might not be too bad, but the PLC will have to spend about 10-13m on him. He is a great player who can play at LB if needed but can play CB regularly. He is also experienced, but young and has great organisational and leadership skills which are always useful at the back. If we get Chivu with a defender like Ferdinand or Thuram, we'd have a good back pair. If Ferdinand were to come, Chivu would probably be a bit out of the budget, but he would be a great buy in the long run and when Blan retires, we won't have to spend on a hot shot defender.

Never seen Roberto Carlos play RB, he's not an option for United anyway.

And if Finnan can play RB and LB then fine, bring him along ;)

Oh yes I like Chivu too ... mainly due to his flexibility in able to cover the left ... If the gaffer think he can play a good CB (which is of course, our main concentration here) ... then I would think Chivu + a right back(less priority) will be a good move ...

Merely raising the topic here 'cos of the "edginess" ... I hope silent means the gaffer and Peter Kenyon is doing something "very meaningful" at the background and will give all of us a good smile end of day ...

Not much time left before the start of season ... I really don't hope to see a dodgy new team taking 5-10 league matches to settle down and find them way below the table playing catching game then ..

This is a funny off-season ... with all of us KNOWING that we will have to strengthen and the gaffer WILL DEFINITELY sign (many left after last season) ... but yet we have yet to see a single pcs. of transfer so far ...

Queinroz as 2nd man though ... sounds a good catch for me ..

Allow me to add another possible candidates as our "cheap alternatives" as our 3rd striker ...

Flo !!

wow wow wow again ??

Who say he's shit ? ..

I say he's decent and could suit our play quite ok ... Most important of all - he should be avail for not an astronomical kitty and he should be ok to play from the bench ... he's doing that at Rangers and before that at Chelsea anyway .. .
