After watching the FA Cup Final of 1979, I consider the worth of Gordon McQueen in todays market. This is the kind of player I expect for 30 million pounds. I don't think Rio Ferdinand is anywhere near as good as Gordon McQueen. McQueen could do it all. Devestating with the head, good with both feet and strong in the tackle.

My question is : What's the big deal in Ferdinands game? IMO, he is one dimensional. He can run and tackle.

However, Gordon had the reputation of being inconsistent and being caught out of position too often. That is not to denigrate the man. He WAS a very good defender - but not consistent enough.
That is what I have heard, read and seen on video.

You have already named 2 <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laugh Out Loud]" />

The dimension being defending. For 28 million pounds I'd expect a much better passing game and abilty in going forward like Blanc.

hmmmm....Rio has indeed had an indifferent and injury plauged start to his United career.
It may be mildly embarrassing right now that our star defender hasn't got going, but so what?
Rio will come good, O'Shea and Brown are looking strong and confident. Silvestre has developed into a mature defender.
By my reckoning we have the most talented group of young central defenders in England and perhaps Europe .

True.

Given the criticism our defence has had over the past 2 years, to now see the situation where we have a solid long term central defence of Ferdinand plus either Wes, John, Micky or even Gaz on top of the experience of Larry. Gary and Micky as first choice full backs with Phizza as well as Wes and John capable of covering both. And of course superstar to lead the dancing come trophy time ;)

The best part is that the bulk of the resurgence has come from our home grown talent with Tate and Roche following on behind them. Obviously, the defence is still young and has looked better largely because the team has at last found some cohesion but if we can put together a few more solid performances like this then the strength can only increase.

are Tate and Roche any good? And isn't there also Tierney? When Silvestre was criticised heavily earlier this season someone mentioned Tierney's name as a possible substitute.

Tate & Roche should get a few cup outtings and maybe a few appearances from the bench. From what little I have seen and more from what I have heard, Tate should make the grade and is advancing fast whilst Roche may fall just below the required grade (he is already 21, but may still develop) but is a good squad player at the moment.

Tierney is another very good prospect at fullback and may start pushing for a place in the next year or two.
