Carles Alena

Supposedly the next great attacking midfielder from the La Masia production line. If we get him, we'd have a logjam at the attacking positions soon with Gomes and Chong on deck.

Source is The Mirror though so be wary?

From what I've seen of Alena, he is more of a Xavi type of player as opposed to a 10. Not that it will happen, but he, Chong and Gomes could all feasibly become first team regulars all playing different roles. Alena is more a 6/8, Gomes an 8/10 while Chong is a winger.

Hmm, good insight, updated OP. I myself only saw highlights of him and only based my assumption on this Barca forum I lurk. I thought Kaptoum (sp?) was their Xavi type too, what happened to that boy?

I guess Alena is a Carrick replacement then?

I hope not as he's 18 which means Carrick won't be replaced in years.

His first name is Carles, not Carlos. Its the Catalan spelling, like Puyol.

Non story, his youth contract expires in 2017 and is up for a renewal. He's valued and aspires to play for the first team - moreover, if he were to be tempted away it'd be far more credible a rumour to be linked to Pep than Mou

Alena is also a 8/10. I doubt he'll play as a 6.

This is a non-story, as usual Barca youth players using our name to get the deal they want from their club.

To be fair, there is plenty of precedence of their young talents leaving.

Young talents being poached at 15, not leaving after

Well discounting the ones you wanted to sell, Thiago still left right? There was another striker who went to Roma I believe, Sanabria or something like that who was also supposed to be a very big deal and Barca wanted to stay.

Just because it's Pep it'll be more credible? What exactly do they have in common aside from once playing for Barca? Not having a go at you, but isn't Pep's posse now at City with him? Far as I've heard, he really isn't that well connected at Barca anymore.

Barca's youth policy have changed since Laporta and co. were kicked from the club. Rossell/Barto now run the team like any other big club, and their youths have taken a backseat to the big money signings. It'd be wise for United (and other PL clubs) to hover over the remaining blue chip talents left in La Masia as Barca continues their big spending. Someone will eventually hit the jackpot.

If he develops correctly, he'll be closer to Iniesta than Xavi. A lot of ifs and buts though.

For the same reason I remind cules about the Pep effect, no one is more blaugrana than Guardiola - no one. And if you're a player, much less a Catalan midfielder from La Masia you know this better than most.

Either way, only way Pep, IMHO, would even consider making a move for Carles is if the player himself was unsettled and from what I've observed of him over the past few years there's no chance of that. In the bigger picture though, Pep wouldn't poach from Barcelona

Pique & Cesc were poached at younger ages at a time when there was uncertainty within the club but mostly about how the youth were used. Bellerin joined his mate Toral who was always going to leave while the 3rd member of that trio of best mates refused to be lured away by money, a Catalan midfielder named Sergi Samper

Like I previously mentioned, it's a non story - he will renew and will play for the first team. Plus, he's not the next Iniesta or Xavi - lazy comparison

Agree to disagree. I don't think this generation cares that much about their clubs' histories. Playing time + chance to win trophies + money beats any perceived prestige to play for this or that club.

Thiago

And before you say he wanted out, Pep could've easily said no to him and convince him to stay at his 'beloved' Barca. He didn't.

Damn, Pep is a saint for some of you here

Depends on the club and the players that make it up, apples & oranges

Try again, Thiago was 20 y.o. and being marginalized. His fee was as low as it was due to not meeting minimum appearances in his newly renegotiated contract. Moreover, Thiago is not Catalan and has never claimed that he would play out his career at Barcelona

Ahh yeah, you're right. High and mighty Barca is above the rules of this generation.

Those are all true

Be that as it may, Pep still poached him. Stop making excuses, it's just one player

Nonsensical response, what rules of this generation?

Got any local Mancs who came up through the United academy that fled? Barcelona is the capital of Catalunya, a distinct culture & language distinguishes them from the rest of Spain. For a local kid who has dreamt of playing for the Catalan club, it's certainly incomparable to anything that can be experienced in the Premiership

Like a few things you've already demonstrated, you don't even know what the term poaching means. Poaching is acquiring a player without having to pay a transfer fee due to being underage (Bellerin, Toral, Cesc, Pique etc.). Paying a transfer fee for a player who is unsettled is apples & oranges

I wonder why people never learn. From what I[ve heard there was no concrete approach from us to sign Inaki Pena last summer for example. Every good La Masia youngster was linked with us at some points (in fact name me one that wasn't linked with us) and most of the case it resulted on their new contract not long after. Someone connect the dots.
