Manchester United set to sign Charlton’s 17-year-old defender Carl Jenkinson

A report in The People this morning, suggests that Sir Alex Ferguson will add to his burgeoning squad of young players with the signing of Charlton Athletic defender Carl Jenkinson.

The 17-year-old is believed to be worth around £500,000, with Charlton in need of the funds after they were relegated from the Championship to League One.

Jenkinson, who has recovered from a serious knee injury, is a centre back by trade but can also play on the right hand side.

According to the official Charlton Athletic website, "Jenkinson likes to get forward with the ball" and "the Football Association is continuing to monitor" his progress after a serious injury.

I really think they should get a million quid when he plays 50 games for us. And then another million after another 50. Still be a cheap player for any top club.

Poor Addicks

Hell - it's not that long since I was watching them beat Newcastle 3-1 - one of the most down-to-earth stadiums I have been to - players signed autographs and took pictures with fans on the way to the dressingroom.

And I even joined in when they were singing "Parker, Parker - what's the score" (should be mentioned that Parker scored a screamer a few minutes later which kinda shut them up)

And there is no way Charlton is coming up again soon

Got a few mates who live in South London, Erith to be exact... said it's like a ghost town now, I remember when they were competing for Europe he said the place was awesome... now, it's empty.

Shame, always had a soft spot for them.

Well - the area around Charltons footballground is not exactly the place you go to as a tourist to put it that way :)

That makes 2 off Charlton if the McGintey story is true aswell. I think we are pretty much ok for young defenders. Reece Brown and Thorpe look very promising IMO.

It would be very easy to hate us if you were a Charlton fan, what's the point for smaller clubs?

I'm a little bit annoyed by this, I can defend the annual 30m on berbatov or whatnot, but combined with this it just doesn't sit well.

Can't really disagree with you on that. But with the talk of the 6+5 rule coming in, it only makes sense to invest in young English talent so they can be given the best training possible by the club, and hopefully become of a high enough quality to fill those required places in the team.

The rule may be of benefit to national sides, but as is suggested by your post, it probably means a lot of smaller clubs are going to lose quality young talent before they've even been made use of.

From what I remember Charlton is a great club.. They have a very well planned out club.. Curbishley was the major reason behind all of that.. He was there for so many years setting up the scouting system linking up with good clubs (Parent-Feeder clubs) getting in Coaches, Management etc etc.. It goes to show how if given the time success can be achieved.

Another way to put it was that Curbishley was Charlton's Sir Alex Ferguson..

Why hate us ? Let's face it - Charlton needs the money and let's say they end up getting £1.5 million for 2 untried teenagers - it's not that bad a deal for them. It's not like they are destined to be the next Wayne Rooney.
And seriously - what players have Charlton got that are worth £1 million ?

Clubs with talented players who get relegated will lose quite a few of them - we have seen it before and we will see it again. Boro will lose quite a few of theirs in the summer - Leeds have been robbed for 3-4 years now...why should it be different with Charlton ?

.why should it be different with Charlton ?

it shouldn't, all clubs who bother with an academy should be protected ... finance apart , what's the point in smaller clubs fans taking an interest in exciting prospects if they are just gone at 17.

Good post.

And to think the manner in which they let him go? Unbelieveable Jeff!
Not that the fans would like it but he should be one of the first names that newcastle consider.
