'tis a silly place
Barthez is out for a month, many are calling this the perfect time to get a replacement. Im happy with Fab and Carroll, but I heard Carini's name thrown about. His move from Juve to Arse is on the brink of collapse because Wenger wants him as back-up but he insists he should be on the first-team. Worth having a look in ?

not if hes crying about having a guaranteed first place. Fab is still no1 and Carroll more than adequate backup

I have a sneaky feeling, call me paranoid or whatever, that the Carini decision to sign a contract could have something to do with the fact that we are apparently in the market for a cover for Barthez. He would be guaranteed first team football for @ least one month, and if he performed well he may establish himself (don't slate me for this, I have every confidence in Barthez and want him as our first choice keeper) i'm just stating Carini's possible line of thought.

It's just a possibility, but hey maybe i'm just talking out of, the, well you know what I mean.

Yep, we know what you mean.

The Carini deal was supposed to have been signed and sealed two or three weeks ago. I don't think it was not because he waited for another club.

Bit twitchy about this one. I'm still having sleepless nights from our last Italian keeper!

Taibi the sequel - ahhhhhhhh

Lets stick with Carrol and wait for Fab. If his injuires persist though then we'll have to make a move for a top keeper (preferably someone who can reach the crossbar !)

Errrr he's the uruguayan national team keeper.

Carini is Uruguayn. And he's already proven himself more than Taibi surely, at international Level and Champions League here and there.

And he's not coming anyway.

He sounds a bit like Barthez, but fed up with being a reserve keeper, so its understandable that he wants a first team place, it shows ambition.

Well, we don't sign much from Serie A but other clubs have had excellent results from doing so. The fact that we got Taibi (who never really got much of a chance, although admittedly, I was happy not to give it to him!) doesn't mean there aren't good players there we could use.

Carini is a fantastic keeper and, given the choice, I would pick him over Barthez for the short and long term. However, we bought Carroll and Steele in the last ~6 months so I doubt we will look for yet another keeper.

Alex has been quoted as saying we might need to if Barthez is going to be out for a while. But I think if Roy Carroll starts the season well then he might not. The problem would be if he got injured too.

With our luck it might as well happen. But then, you can't keep buying first team quality as backup for the backup just in case 2 players get injured in the same position.

We should invest on someone who can keep these guys fit and injury-free, it starts getting worrying to see how they go down like flies!

Barthez is injury prone and since the goalkeeper is one area where you want the player to almost always play, it is a concern. For that reason alone it would be a good idea to replace him. For the moment though a one year loan might be a good idea.

agreed Kneel. hey am sure we can borrow the Incredible Inflatable Man Bosnich for a season that'd go down well. :D

He'd be an excellent eventual replacement for Barthez. Maybe in a year or so. A loan would be ideal for the moment.

Talksport said both parties were in talks last night but no agreement has been made yet, and his name is not on the Arsenal programme. Sounds like they may go for Poom.

There are rumours now that we might sign him.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/a/arsenal/2201959.stm

I think he could be a great signing. That Italian expert for talksport was raving about him a couple of weeks ago.

Im starting to think these United rumours could hold a little water. Wenger:

'The Carini deal is over. He has chosen another club. Maybe you will see him somehwere else in the Premiership.'

Would be the ultimate smack in the face if Fergie justjumped in and took him from under their noses. Id be laughing my arse off. Just think of the look on Whingers face.

I just thought I would sing my own praises. No in all seriousness it just seemed to be too much of a coincidence, SAF statement about getting a new keeper and Carini's sudden decision to not sign his contract. I'm mean he knew he would be playing second fiddle to Seaman and to Buffon if he returns to Juventus so why the sudden in-decision.

Lets see where these Carini stories lead to...

carini is potentially world class...outside of buffon and frey, i can't think of a better young keeper in the serie a.

It would fit in nicely after Fergie said any player would want to play for United...

I agree, he's a huge talent and obviously getting huge 22 year old talents is never a bad thing.

But one wonders where it leaves Barthez and Carroll. Carini is younger than Roy but if we get him now on loan and possibly later on, on a permanent deal, Carroll's gonna have tough time ever becoming regular first team player.

Wenger: "I am delighted to have signed Fabian Carini on loan. He is a young international goalkeeper with outstanding natural ability and a great temperament and will definitely strengthen our squad as we look forward to next season."

TribalFootball:
Juventus are expected to loan goalkeeper Fabian Carini to Manchester United for the coming season.
The Uruguayan failed to agree terms with Arsenal last week, allowing United to nick in and sign the 22 year-old.

A Juve spokesman told Tuttosport, "We expect to agree a deal today."

The Turin giants may insist on a sweetener by striking a deal of first refusal on United's Paul Scholes.

The last line is clearly bollocks that they've added on themselves, but it looks like we may have a new backup keeper very shortly. Sir Alex was right, everyone does want to play for United.

Arsenal admit defeat over Carini

LONDON, Aug 18 (Reuters) - Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has finally admitted defeat in his bid to sign Uruguay goalkeeper Fabian Carini.
Carini was pictured with an Arsenal shirt last month when the north London club thought they had finalised a deal with Juventus to take him on loan for a year.

But the two parties could not agree personal terms and British newspaper reports suggest Carini could now be snapped up by rivals Manchester United.

'The Carini deal is over,' Wenger told reporters after his side's 2-0 Premiership win over Birmingham City.

'He has chosen another club... maybe you will see him somehwere else in the premier league (this season).'

United need cover because their number one Fabien Barthez is injured, while Roy Carroll and third string Ben Williams are considered too inexperienced to cope for lengthy periods.

Carini has flown home to Italy for the moment, leaving Arsenal to search for more back-up for David Seaman.

'We will be looking for someone else,' said Wenger, who has 21-year-old Stuart Taylor and Graham Stack, 20, as cover.

'We will make a decision before the West Ham United game (next Saturday) but we don't want to talk about any names just yet,' added Wenger

wenger admits defeat, who else would the other team be, it can only be us, as he would be stupid to leave arsenal for loonypool.

carini has the potential to be a hit like cudicini, he would sort our defence out for years:

imagine:

carini,
Gaz/brown, RIO, O'shea, Escude.

Built to last more than ten years, that's ten years of consistencey.

It does sound awfully promising, I must say. And it brings the question: Why didn't we do this earlier?

Carini,
Brown, RIO, O'shea, Escude.

Sounds great to me, has the potential to become the best defense in the world, though it would take a few seasons to mature. Which is why you have to gradually move to such a defense.

Arsene Wenger has conceded defeat in his bid to sign Juventus keeper Fabian Carini on loan and has confirmed that Carini could well be Old Trafford bound.

"I think you will find Carini is going to our great rivals," Wenger said at the weekend

Wenger said on Thursday that a problem had arisen over personal terms:

"It's over. We will look for somebody else and I will make a decision before the West Ham game next week. Maybe he is in Man United at the moment. The personal terms will not be a problem there.'

Meow.

Gary must earn his place back. This injury could be a blessing in disguise. He hadnt been performing to his maximum potential. Now he must work and fight of the competition for places.

Yeah but with Wes out 3 months i cant seem to find another rb than Gary.
