Would help with the quality control of the site which is going on at the moment, and allow people to admire or give negative reps for posts.

Obviously if the system was abused, or not used correctly, mods could take steps to stop this.
 
x42bn6 he meant for us to give each other rep points and not the mod give us points..
 
IMO, not a good idea.

Why would you want to know if a poster has a bad reputation or not anyway? That would be discrimination.

aye, if we are going to do that we should do it properly and put ethnicity somewhere in the user profile ... and whether posters make noise when they breathe, hate them types.
 
I think it would be a bad thing. Some people would very much stick to "the party line" on issues and not offer really different opinions (such as "I hope we sell Ronaldo") as they'd be crucified. One of the good things about here is that you do get different opinions and this would be stifled a bit with a popularity system.
 
I think others have already given good reasons why rep points have no real benefit.

The mods do use them for newbies where it is very useful for determining who gets promoted, but for regular "full" users, it's pretty much pointless (excuse the pun!).

A muppet is a muppet and you don't need a rating to figure it out!
 
People will just bad rep people they disagree with or don't like rather than judge the quality of a post and rep a user.
 
This idea can work only if you hand the ability to give negative points to a handful of football specialists, but certainly not to every member.
