  1. You are Manchester United manager in the summer.
  2. You have been given a 3 year contract and the team have just made 4th position.
  3. You are very likely to face the toughest opposition in the qualifying round.
  4. The Glazers, sponsors and fans are desperate for success.
  5. The club is most likely going to be banned in from all incoming transfer activity for 5 windows (in 6 months time) for breaking transfer rules.
  6. You have unlimited funds but must be spent reasonably to balance the books.
  7. The board also demands that you keep the United identity as best as you can (Youth, Attacking football etc).
  8. The board expects some form of success. The COC at minimum in the first year.
  9. Squad size rules still apply. Home grown rules still apply
  10. Keep your transfer reasonable. You can't buy Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar in one window.
Go...

What kind of manager are you?
  1. Happy to swing the axe for a clear out but risk instability in the squad.
  2. I trust in my ability to get the best out of these players. Only a couple will do.
  3. Promote the youth!
  4. Buy only experienced heads. Will they still be good in 5 windows time?
  5. Buy young players. The first 2 years of barrenness might be worth the success of the 3rd year. But will it?

Bale, Stones, Griezemann, Gundogan & Carvalaj

Unlimited funds right?

Messi, Suarez, Neymar. Atletico's defence. Bayern's midfield. About 800m or something, but problem solved.

*I see you've added a clause against buying these players.

Attainable targets to start with, especially those with release clauses...

Griezmann, aubameyang, mane, laporte, gundogan etc.

Its crazy that our board and managers continually fail to see this. Our board and transfer policies are extremely disappoining for a club of our stature.

sell: valdes, romero, rojo, blind, valencia, blackett, borthwick jackson, goss, powell, schneiderlin, fellaini, januzaj, depay and rooney

take illegal action to buy Ravel, Welbeck, Larnell Cole, Thorpe, Nani, Anderson and Rafael so we get transfer ban for next few periods:drool:

---------De Gea------------
Rafael-Smalling-Thorpe-Shaw
-------Pearson-Bastian-----
Nani------Ravel-----Welbeck
---------Wilson------------

Firstly I'd either sell Rooney or he'd agree to relinquishing the armband and becoming a bench player. Then I'd sell Fellaini and Mata to make room. Bring Wilson and Januzaj back and get them PL loans.

Get Stones as Smalling's new CB partner, buy Gundogan, Sane and one of Kane or Lukaku and switch to 4-3-3.

Edit* Just remembered the transfer ban part, I'd also buy Ruben Neves and
João Cancelo.

Almost all targets are attainable. When you've got Rooney making more money than most footballers in the world then Manchester United doesn't seem like a bad place to earn a living.

3 year contract?

Summer 2016:

Pay Antoine Griezmann's buyout clause before the European Championship - £58 million.
Overpay for İlkay Gündogan to avoid competition before the European Championship - £30 million.
Overpay for Rúben Neves before the European Championship - £25 million.
Activate Aymeric Laporte's buyout clause during the European Championship - £34 million.
Negotiate for Zlatan Ibrahimović with Mino Raiola during the European Championship - Pay top wages for 3 year contract, and a fat signing bonus.
Negotiate for Ever Banega - Bosman.
Acquire Alvaro Morata in swap deal *.
Negotiate for Samir Handanović - Bosman (best deal of the summer - been excellent for Internazionale - 11 goals conceded in 17 games).

Sell Wayne Rooney for whatever.
* Sell David de Gea for Álvaro Morata (Madrid will buy him back from Juventus for us) + £25 million.
Sell Michael Carrick.
Keep everyone else.
Sell Juan Mata for whatever.

Net transfer spend ~£90 million (assuming £30 million for Rooney and Mata combined so conservative estimate).

Squad:

Keepers:

Samir Handanović + 1.

Defenders:

Matteo Darmian, Antonio Valencia, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones (last year warning), Aymeric Laporte, Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw, Daley Blind.

Midfielders:

İlkay Gündogan, Andreas Pereira, Morgan Schneiderlin, Ever Banega, Ander Herrera, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Rúben Neves.

Forwards:

Zlatan Ibrahimović, Álvaro Morata (build him up as Zlatan's successor and play him as his relief, as well as wide in rotation), Anthony Martial, Memphis, Antoine Griezmann, Adnan Januzaj, Ashley Young, James Wilson.

Starting XI:

Flip to 4-3-3, and rotate the squad frequently to give more experience to younger players.

Winter 2016:

Buy Leon Goretzka for £25 million (train him behind Fußballgott as a deep lying playmaker/ defensive midfielder).
If Darmian's attacking play doesn't improve, buy João Cancelo for £20 million.

2017:

Starting XI is largely the same as the previous season, but start giving more time to the younger players.

2018:

Younger players ready to step up into starting roles after 1-2 season worth of experience.

Starting XI:

222-formation-tactics.png

Average age of outfield players ~24 years - a lot of them are going to enter their prime; and net spend of around £140 million. Add a couple players each season to improve squad, and 2 young player (16-18 yrs) on top of that to develop into first team starters/ squad options. If Academy players are good enough, play them - but don't obsess over it if the quality isn't there. Maybe try to scout better local youngsters in liaison with the scouting department to build for the future.

Absolutely cracking post mate. Pity Woodward and the board do not have the foresight or common sense that you do.

This is scarily good.

34 year old Zlatan who has never played in the PL to replace Rooney (on a 3 year contract no less ), probably one of the worst ideas I've ever heard.

IN: Stones, Pogba, Reus, Embolo, Rannochia

Out: Rooney, Mata, Carrick, Blackett, Keane, Johnstone,

Loan: Goss, Fosu Mensah, Borthwick Jackson
returned from loan: januszaj, Pearson, Wilson
contract extended: Powell

Formation 4-3-3
First xi: De gea - Darmian Smalling Stones Shaw- Schneiderlin Pogba Herrera - Martial Embolo Reus

Second xi: Romero/Pereira - Valencia/Varela Rannochia Jones/Rojo Blind/Rojo - Schweinstieger Powell/Pearson Fellaini/Pereira - Young Wilson/Januszaj Depay

I've said it before, but I think players like Martial and Memphis would have benefited immensely from having someone Zlatan around, had we acquired him a few years ago. It isn't outrageous to think that Zlatan could have had the same effect on this team as Cantona had, to lead by sheer force of personality, to inspire the younger players with his confidence as well as taking the spotlight off them when things don't go so well. Right now we only have Rooney to do that, and he doesn't do a particularly good job of it.

1. Happy to swing the axe for a clear out but risk instability in the squad.

I'd start by offloading some players who are either too old, or simply not United quality. Carrick would be in the too old bracket, while Fellaini, Jones, Wilson and possibly Lingard would be in the 'not good enough' bracket. I reckon Lingard would do fine at Everton or something, so I'd offer him, Valencia or Fellaini to Everton in a cash + player deal for Lukaku.

After that, I'd shore up the defence (hopefully) by bringing in Bonucci, who I really like and should be with us for a few seasons at least, . With defense sorted I'd look to shore up our ageing midfield with Isco and a younger player like Barkley to replace Carrick and the soon-to-be retiring (at least within our 5-window period probably) Bastian.

Finally, I'd bring in Greizmann and a young, promising forward to replace Rooney once he's completely burnt out (I'd usually consider selling Rooney, but this 5-window transfer block would make me want to keep enough staff who could function in this new side). Someone like Fekir or Dybala perhaps, or younger and cheaper if I had time to scout a few :)

Without going over the top with spending (on a Neymar or someone equally unrealistic), I think this would set us up quite nicely. I'd also channel a lot of money into youth development and bringing in younger players to bring through the ranks.

It'd look like this when finished (roughly):

----------------De Gea-----------------
Darmian---Smalling--Bonucci--Shaw
--------------Schneiderlin-------------
-----------Isco--------Herrera--------
Greizmann---------------------Martial
-----------------Lukaku----------------

Subs & backups: Valdes, Jones, Blind, Barkley, Schweinsteiger, Memphis, Rooney, Fekir, Young, Mata

Almost mate. Periera and Wilson don't need to be registered as they are u21. Leaves a squad of 24, 6 count as homegrown, leaves 18 foreign and we can only register 17 non homegrown. So you might be able to tweak summer 16 deals to make it work, winter 16 is defo ruled out.

Yeah maybe if we got him years ago, but Cantona retired at ~30. I'd much rather keep Rooney over signing a 34 year old Zlatan. It is completely idiotic to suggest we would improve by replacing Rooney with Zlatan at this stage.

Recruit:
Griezmann £58m Top quality, gettable with the release clause, can take the goalscoring burden off Martial.
Moutihno £15-20m Great technique, experienced, can play in a midfield 2 or 3.
Umtiti £15-20m Good, young, available for a right fee, can do shifts at LB.

DDG
Darmian* Smalling Umtiti* Shaw
Schneiderlin
Herrera* Moutinho
Mata* Griezmann
Martial

Then add 1 or 2 world class talents who may be available and want to join (ideally 3 or 4 but not realistic).
*: Main positions for further upgrade.

It pisses me off we were offered moutinio and passed on it. Someone like him would be perfect for our midfield.

Play 4-4-2.
Make 3 signings each 50 million pounds each (total 150 million pounds over 3 years) that are English, young and wont feck off to Spain

Wow. Very well thought out & articulated, but I question if we could get 30 mil for Mata/Rooney (their wages are too high and we usually get less transfer fee to make up for it), & don't think Real would give us 25 mil & Morata for DDG, so that blows the estimated 90 mil net spend. Rather keep DDG & pay straight up for Morata & maybe still get Handanovic, just in case, but it could be overkill if DDG stays.

I'd still think we would be short of defenders, unless the youngsters prove out, which can be possible. Rather get rid of Jones & Valencia and recruit another fullback as cover, which would bring net spend to over 200 mil. I would probably also try to flog Blind & Young, more of getting new faces in, but they also are blunt Swiss Army knives, and in a non-LVG team would be liabilities. You forgot Fellaini (figure you sold him as well), but then again, Carrick doesn't need to be sold since he probably will retire or at worse not re-signed.

I wish you worked for United !

Expensive
RW - Griezmann/Sane
CM - Gundogan/Koke/Verrati
LCB - Not sure, really. Haven't seen enough of Laporte this year to say him with confidence. Stones has the ball skills but seems to get dribble more than i'd like

Bit Cheaper
RB - Best 17-20 year old we can find to compete with Darmian
Striker - New Chicharito, basically, to score off the bench and get 15-20 starts
CM2 - Best 17-20 year old we can find to very soon replace Schweinsteiger as the backup for Herrera and Gundogan

Team:

----------Martial-------- (Striker, Wilson)
Memphis-----Griezmann (Mata, Januzaj, Lingard)
--Herrera--Gundogan---- (Schweinsteiger, Mata, CM2, Pereira)
------Schneiderlin--------- (Schweinsteiger, Blind)
Shaw--------------Darmian (Blind, Rojo, RB)
------LCB---Smalling------ (Blind, Rojo, Jones)
----------De Gea----------- (Romero)

That's the squad for next year. Still work to be done, in the form of selling one of Rojo or Jones and getting a better CB.
