While I'd never want a scouser player for us, I wouldn't mind ex-gooners. Looking at their team I'd happil take a few off 'em.

Henry, Vieira, Pires for a start.

I didn't initially expect Leeds to sell their star player Rio Ferdinand to us for a new world record sum for a defender. But would Arsenal ever sell to us? They could do with a bit of money while they build a new stadium, and previously sold players like Overmars, Anelka, Petit, all at their best imo. Would their player's want to come? Did we really almost sign Vieira? If we did then certainly he was Keano's replacement - have we now permanently missed out on that opportunity?

David Dein would never sell to us while we are at the top. Leeds only sold Rio because of their crippling debts

I think it's more aposite to say that Vieira,Pires and Henry wouldn't want a manager other than Wenger.....so if you really want those 3 players (2 chances ...slim and none and slim just left town ;) ) you had better get Wenger first.....again,fat chance.Nice to see ,though, that some of you recognise real quality. :D

Absolute bollox.....Well,our best players are Henry,Vieira,Pires,Ljungberg,Bergkamp,Campbell,Cole,Wiltord etc....I can't see us selling them until they are past their best.

Though, what might be considered a worse crime is selling players with no adequate replacement...Stam/Yorke/Cole/Sheringham etc.....and now you have Forlan/Veron/Blanc...which might explain why you envy our squad.

True,
But Arsenal have become a better side than they were with Overmars & Co, so you'll have to admit they did good deals.

You on the other hand can hardly say you've become any better over the last couple of years, can you?

TRM.

12 years.

last couple of years?

just last season mate

I wouldnt have em,their jerseys are always covered in snot, what the feck is Wenger feeding them anyhoo? ;)

I really love hearing the Arsenal fans blabber on about Vieira like he is Mr Arsenal. They seem to forget the time when they were a distant second to Manchester United, and all Vieira could think about was how much Lazio, Real Madrid or indeed Manchester United would pay him. Now times are more rosy at Arsenal, he's having the time of his life. Figures, doesn't it.

Selling Petit was a mistake imo, but I can't see Wenger selling his crown jewels, least of all to us, and we wouldn't be interested in the rest of them.

united could and should have bought viera and any arsenal fans that dont admit they were shitting themselves when united started thier interest are bigger bullshitters than i took them for

bit like leeds and rio

it more than likely would have happened if we hadnt got veron, viera was angling for a move at the time remember.

u knoe wat maybe arsenal can have a gift from us forlan) and say

"WE WON" "WE WON"

get it

It seems to me that some Arsenal fans have completely blotted out their memory cells .Maybe too much drowning of the sorrows after dismal Champions League performances, not to mention what must rank as the all-time dreariest EUEFA Cup Final ever).

`Mr Arsenal`, Patrick Vieira, not so long ago took off to Florida for his holiday and authorised his agent to make public attacks in his, Vieira`s name, about how Arsenal were second rate, were not ambitious, were only buying `boys` etc.

He deeply embarrassed Arsenal by airing petulant, disruptive opinions so publicly and in such a boorish manner. Had Manchester United offered him the money he had wanted, he would have been here with us. Instead Arsene squealed, `That`s not the Patrick I know` and he was mollified with the captain`s armband.

Such are the ways of those who run the club Arsenal - rewarding a prominent player who attacks it in public by giving him the captaincy. Had a United player done that he would have as much chance of being captain of the team as I would have.

I am glad we did not sign Vieira - his wage demands were excessive according to reports from a number of sources and I really don`t want someone who slags at other team`s players physically and at his own club verbally in our Manchester United team. Please stay in London and do us a favour.

The point is who would we want from Arsenal at this time and to replace whom ?

Viera or Keane ?

Gilberto or Veron ?

Henry or RVN ?

Witord or Ole ?

Cole or Silvestre ?

Campbell or Rio ?

Cygan or Brown/JOS ?

Ljundberg or Scholes ?

Gary N or Loshny(?) ?

Not that Wenger or Dein would sell us any of the above, do we actually need any of them ? Personally, with the possible exception of Keane in a couple of seasons time, I'm quite happy with our lot provided SAF can get them functioning properly as a team which hopefully he seems to be doing again at last, touch wood !

arsenal would never sell to us. The only player there i'd like to see at old trafford would be Henry. We need a pacey striker to go with Ruud

your captain wants to win the CL, and has intimated this will influence whether he stays or not. so i spose arse doing well and showing progress enough that they can win in the near future would be an important factor in whether you can keep your world class players. <img src="graemlins/angel.gif" border="0" alt="[Angel]" />

i don't think it's about replacing any of our players. It's more about adding to our squad.

One thing very true is we have sold and have not adequately replaced. We have great players, but the squad isn't so big anymore.

So when we bring up possible signings, i think it's more of adding and not replacing.

Hi Jopub, nice to see you back. I prefer your postings any day to those of Gillespie!

Sorry, I just don`t like Patrick Vieira. I feel Arsenal and the Manager let themselves down giving the captaincy to such a petulant, slag-merchant as Vieira. Roy Keane has a big mouth but he uses it to spur on the team - Keano never went on holidays and slagged off his club for not being ambitious, signing `boys`, not doing this or that and all from the safety of remote USA.

NO United player who mouthed off the way Vieira did through his agent would EVER wear the captain`s armband. I don`t respect the way Arsenal and Arsene jumped to attention and gave Paddy a new toy after he spat the dummy.

Contrary to what some Arsenal supporters think, there were loads of MU supporters praying Vieira would not join. Including me.

Morning and thanks gg

Well I have to say I am in 'backward compatible agreement' if there is such a thing !.

Truth is when all that 'Real' / transfer / and contract stuff was going down mmmmm... what 18 months ago I wanted shot of Paddy myself . He was utterly undermining the camp and showing he was at heart a real mercenary . He was also underminig to Arsene to the point wheer our manger also thought if I can't keep our mos influential / best, most pivotal player I can't really do the job and even gave him a doubt about keeping the job Moreover his performances at the start of last season were abysmal . As you know these things spread and you could see the club , not only the first eleven, were burdened with the whole affair .

As for captaincy material he was actually never that imo although to compare with Tony was unfair .

BUT BUT BUT .........

It would seem AW managed to convince Paddy that his bread WAS buttered at Highbury .

I won't go into the full details or I'd be here all day BUT I have atheory as to Vieira's problem at the time and it was due largely to one game - the Cup final loss to Liverpool . We'd come second in everything since the double in 98/99 and we played fantastic in that final with Vieira in awesome mood . As you know we lost it in the last 7 mins Owens brilliant poaching ( well done him ) . This particular loss really hit Patrick and it hammered him making him think we can played like that and STILL not win anything . With best mate Zinadine in the other ear telling him how he shold play at Real for billions it was in retrospect surprising he did not go .

Anyway Arsene did the best managerial talk of his career and made him believe he should give it one more shot.

He still did not play at hos best for the first half of last season but plugged away . Arsene signed HIS contract which told me he knew PV was staying .

Then another factor came into it - The return of Tony Adams . As TA got back he took over the captaincy EVERY time . Actually he was magnificent even though he played few games . His most important contribution was with Vieir . In many of the latter games last year TA often took Vieira aside (particularly at Bolton away0 and gave him very public middle of the pitch bollockings. You could see Patrick was more than shocked by this treatment .

Paddy then terminated the relationship with his agent - One hell of a good move .

The belief returned towards the latter end of the season, the weight of responsibility actually helped his game, the inclusion of the much improved Edu helped too as someone else who could hold the ball with him . His disciplinary side improved beyond belief .

In short he had been given a lesson in captaincy in greed , in life, by Arsene, by Tony and his teamates who made him believe it WOULD HAPPEN for him - AT ARSENAL .

It has been fascinating watching his transformation as he has learnes that to captain and lead others you MUST have certain prerequisite qialities and to my and many others amazement he has attained these WITHOUT most importantly losing the fire that makes him NOW arguably the best midfield player in the world .
He has with now, the world class Silva at his side returned, to the form of previous years without the stupidity .

So there it is giggsgirl a transformed player and ( although you wont ever fully change him - thank God )a more mature and responsible man , who is now also a much more 'Tony Adams presence style' captain.

As you will see next week

;) ;)

And there was I thinking how stimulated you were by my posts........such fickleness !! ;)

Thanks for your post Jopub (and yours Gillespie!). So that explains it about Vieira - I am not being sarcastic. Often the truth is different from the simplistic views of one-eyed supporters! I didn`t know that about big Tone keeping the captain`s armband - I assumed Paddy had been given the captaincy to passify him.

There you go - I was wrong. I have to admit that PV is an asset to Arsenal and would have been an asset to Manchester United. We all can learn to love the players we profess to despise when they are opposition!

1 thing about PV - he seems rather privacy-conscious, not a bad thing imo. I have never found an webpages devoted to him and there is a lack of information about him on the net. Does he come from Paris, like Anelka? Was he born in France? I`d be interested to know.
