Can an outfield player wear the No 1 shirt?

Not allowed

It has happened though (but never in the PL, I don't think)

Has this ever happened before?

Well, Mbappe cannot get the 7 but 1 is close enough.

Assuming we can pay the fine and it's not totally banned.

Not allowed in the PL or bigger? Never seen it either but never thought it might not be allowed.
In the PL specifically, although they may have eased the rules. They used to be very strict about shirt numbers but recently we've come to see first team players with very high numbers (which used to not be allowed in the PL).

Gotta admit I find it a bit odd how precious people get about shirt numbers. Makes literally zero difference to anything

Surely we’ll give it to Kovar or something. A young GK who we back to be here long-term

I’m definitely one of these people. Khalid Bouhlarouz wearing number 9, William Gallas number 10. Just a couple of examples that used to irrationally upset me.

What annoys me is when TV matches list the players numerically and the list is just a complete shambles

Rui Patricio wore 11.

So I don't see why not.

Edit. Also just remembered Kafes played for one of those Greek teams used to wear 1.

Mame Biram Diouf was The 1 wasn't he.

Boulahrouz was atrocious at Chelsea and had an awful hair style at the time. I remember one match against Man Utd where he was particularly terrible.

Have you ever seen the United lineup tweets?
I stand corrected. It will indeed make a difference to the lineup tweets. Maybe it'll be a wake up call to the moron who thinks ordering a team lineup by shirt number instead of position is a good idea

Its a throwback from when numbers were assigned to players on a match by match basis depending on their position on the pitch. Either go back to that or just abandon the fact they have any real meaning anymore.

Let's try this formation, it could be the new meta. 10-9 goal scorelines

Ossie Ardiles wore No.1 in the World Cup for Argentina.

In 1978 WC he wore No. 2, Alonso was No. 1. The shirt numbers were distributed following players names listed in alphabetical order (and that's how Mario Kempes got his legendary No. 10!)

https://www.fifa.com/tournaments/mens/worldcup/1978argentina/teams/43922

Goalkeepers wore numbers 3, 5 (Fillol) and 13, for example.

Edit: And you are right, Ardiles was no. 1 for Argentina in 1982 WC (Fillol, legendary GK was no. 7 in that World Cup)

It would be so ridiculous that whatever outfield player goes for it should be kicked out of the club immediately :)

Wrong mentality

The question is can, not should. I don’t believe there is a regulation governing the number 1.

also can a player wear 0 if they want ? I remember back in t'day in F1 , Damon Hill driving the 0 Williams because the champion (also from Williams) the year before retired or something.

The legendary Mexican keeper Jorge Campos would sometimes play as a striker for his club Pumas UNAM and would wear the 1 as an outfield player back in the 90's. Scored a couple of goals for them too. Don't know what the rules say about doing this nowadays though.

If we still had Mata, him. But his name under the number.

One Mata.

Time for bed.

Or died...

Edit: Actually, retired, you're right
