Saturday 8th November 2008!

Whatya's reckon the outcome will be?

Personally, i fancy Joe for this one, but if his wrist & hands problems persist once again, then it will be very hard for Joe. Hope he batters him though!

Shame this fight wasnt staged many years ago. I think this is the first time Joe's actually fought in Madison Square Garden - that in itself tells a 1000 stories, and the "he hasnt fought enough fighters of real calibre in his tenure as Champion " corner, have much fuel for their fire!

damn, i hate shitanta!

In fairness man, if it wasnt on Setanta then you'd have to pay PPV & thats not just on Boxing, that includes football too. Remember 2 years ago before Setanta got more involved, you'd have PPV for Sat Kick-offs at 12.45 & 5.15 etc.. at that adds up quite a bit.

Whereas now, you pay a monthly subscription & you get more choice of football & shitloads more channels in the Setanta package!

Also Setanta are showing more United games than anyone else have done in the past!

I only hate setanta because due to the communal sky dish on my building we don't get reception for setanta. Then trying to cancel it is a nightmare so all in all i hate everyone really :D

Which is why Joe is fighting him now as opposed to quite a few years ago!

Not really, Calzaghe wasnt known in America when Jones Jr was in his prime, and boxers always go for the biggest draws to make the most money.

Calzaghe tried to fight Bernard Hopkins back in 2002, but Hopkins demanded about £8 million whilst Calzaghe could only offer about £3 million.

His destruction of Jeff Lacy made America take notice off him, and then all the top names at his weight wanted to fight him.

Cant wait... my whole weekend is planned around this... anyone know what time the main event is?

Fair point taken on the chin - not in an Amir Khan type of way either :)

The Lacy fight was immense. It really shoved it up to the American boxing fans & media who predicted a rout by Lacy - joke was on them, as that was one of the best performances by a "underdog" i've ever seen if not the best. Joe was amazing, his movement & punching was something of movie script-writing

Its a shame Joe has never got to fight some of the best around though, regardless of the purse demanded by Hopkins & the rest, his management (Warren) should of persued the best the States had to offer & paid the dosh so there's no question marks regarding his status in boxing history, which i feel is a little tarnished in some respects.

I think Joe is a great fighter & i hope his status goes through the roof on Sunday morning

i hope Joe wins, and then retires.

this fight worries me though, as i can see Joe struggling with Jones' power and not being able to hurt Jones himself.

basically i think Calzaghe will either beat Jones with hand speed, or lose due to lacking natural weight compared to Jones.

and whoever wins this fight will definitely fight Hopkins after his destruction of Pavlik. joe won't be able to retire with hopkins shouting him out, and with their previous fight being close...and shit.

can't wait for the fight on Saturday.

I could see Jones winning this one, don't really care that much about it though

tarnished!? he's 44 and 0!!! possibly set to go 45 and 0 on Saturday night against RJJR! that doesn't happen nowadays.

he's beaten EVERYONE put in front of him, including Eubank, Woodhall, Reid, Lacey, Kessler, Mitchell, Hopkins, and possibly Roy Jones.

seriously, if he beats Jones and then retires (which he should, if he beats Jones), he will be remembered as a ring legend and arguably the best British fighter of ALL TIME.

i don't mean to sound like i'm having a go, cuz i'm not. but we should appreciate what Joe Calzaghe has achieved in our time. because there's not many others like him out there, especially British.

Calzaghe is one of the finest boxers around... world champion for ten years, and still seems to have avoided all the bullshit and hype that surrounds his sport and remained down to earth.. I hope he wins this fight...

I actually hate watching boxing but find it so compelling.

Watching calzaghi against Hopkins was horrible. But watching him against Lacy was brilliant. I can see this being a very tough fight for both fighters and it'll be tight but i really hope Calzaghi can give another performance of a lifetime.

When I said tarnished i meant it from the perspective of boxing fans outside of Europe.

In the States he's not rated as highly as many others in the past & some in the present, mostly due to him not gettin the shots he deserved for whatever reasons. Roy Jones Jr will go down as a boxing legend worldwide & deservedly so, and if Joe can pull it off then Joe will stake his own claim - i only hope he doesnt retire after this one - win or lose, as i feel he can go another 1 or 2 fights over there. I dont see him losing but it depends on how well his hand lasts the pace of hittin a brick wall more times than he did against Lacey!

The Jeff Lacey fight really put Joe on the map with Americans when he put on a sublime show of boxing & pugalism, if he can get to that same level again with Jones then it'll be a marvellous example of British Boxing at its finest!

Lennox Lewis had the same problems gettin fights in the States. He had to just beat what was put in front of him until all his fights were in the States & no-one could hide from him. Riddick Bowe was the classic chicken shit fecker - remember "Chicken Bowe" :)

I feel that Frank Warren could of got him fights in the States. Whatever the reason a fight never materialised over there, its the only way to fully get recognition & Joe would of held his own. This will only be his 2nd fight in the states - that doesnt look great on his record but it wasnt his fault!

It was expected really, as Hopkins is the best defensive fighter around. You have be a really patient fighter to beat him and take your shots when you can. No one has hit Hopkins more times than Calzaghe did, and Hopkins has fought the best throughout his career.

This will fight with Jones Jr will still be a dangerous fight for Joe as he's still got the speed, but the defensive side to Jones has gone now and one big shot could take him out. I dont think Joe will knock him out, but I think he will outbox him and take a comfortable points win.

I see where you're coming from, but this idea that fighters have to fight in America to prove themselves is outdated imo. From middleweight up you can argue that a majority of the best fighters are based in Europe anyway: Abraham, Sturm etc at middleweight, Calazghe, Kessler at super middle, Haye, Mormeck, Maccarinelli at cruiser, the Klitchskos, Povetkin, Valuev etc at heavyweight. The only real exception has been at light heavyweight.

Coupled with the fact that the likes of Calzaghe, Hatton and the Klitschskos can generate millions and sell out huge stadiums in Europe, this cast in stone rule that fighters have to go to America to prove themselves makes less and less sense. Especially when you watch one of the most important and best fights of the year in Margarito-Cotto and find out that they couldn't even sell out the arena. If I'm not mistaken it only got a crowd of about 10,000 people.

Is 3am definitely the time this is on? I'm planning my night around it and have heard anywhere from 3am to 5am

joe should win this...

if the fight was 5 or even 10 years ago jones would have outclassed and overpowered him...

Calzaghe should control this fight but I can't see him knocking Roy Jones out. Roy Jones has gone downhill BUT he still has a punch and a boxing brain. Closer than people think this one.

Will be watching. Feels like no time's passed at all since the Hopkins fight, this has crept up on me

0405:Just to give you an update on timings. We have one more fight to finish before the big one. A couple of the undercard fights also went the distance so we may be looking at a 0430 GMT start. Watch this space.

I have it 4 to 3 to Jones but Joe was knocked out in the first round.

Jones is badly cut now
