Surprised by this one.

He'll be a big loss to Everton.

Only a nominal fee involved too, is his contract running down?

When's the last time he looked a player, in fairness? Scored just 2 league goals last year, remember seeing him play a deeper role a few times last season and he looked really ineffective. His game's always been about bursting into the box and nicking a few goals and very little else, once he's lost that bit of physical sharpness he's just not the same player and he doesn't have the all-round game to compensate.

No doubt a hugely important player for Everton in his peak but that was a while ago.

Yep, he really has died a death over the last year is so. The states is a good move for him

Don't think Everton need him now anyway, especially with Jelavic.

Nice guy though, hope he gets on well in MLS

He had 2 years left. Good decision by both the club and the player to do this as Everton probably don't need him anymore now they've signed Jelavic and Naismith.

Ah just read that he's one of their highest paid players.

Cutting the wage bill job.

I'd imagine he'll go down a storm in the States.

Not a big loss at all actually...He's on his last legs and to get pretty much all his original transfer fee and 8 seasons which is great. It's a shame that he won't get a testimonial as he deserved it but it's best for him and the club to leave (in footballing terms). We already have Naismith as a replacement who will probably be on much lower wages too.

EDIT: He will go down as a legend though. I really hope that when he's retired he can come back and we can have a testimonial.

Need to get rid of him in my fantasy football team.

He's a real cult hero, although he seems to have dropped his level recently. I'll never forget the way he just manages to grab goals out of nothing, and of course his trademark celebration. It's probably a good move for both parties anyway.

I remember once he was linked with us to replace Scholes when Scholes was struggling with an eye injury. Half a decade later, Cahill is gonna be playing for a club named after and owned by an energy drink, yet is still one of our best players. Incredible

Tremendous work ethic and was always impressed how good he was in the air, considering his height.

Usually MLS clubs don't pay transfer fees so its a surprise to me. Barcelona just realised Henry and Márquez so they could go.

Has been poor for the best part of 18 months now - if not more. Cracking signing for Everton, done his job well - which was score goals.

Never saw him as a centre mid, though. I always thought he lacked the quality to play that role. Was a good second striker and had a cracking header.

Best of luck to him. Another player that Moyes got the very best out of.

Ah this explains it
"Tim, 32, will move to the Red Bulls for a nominal fee, subject to agreeing personal terms and passing a medical. He will travel to the US in the next few days."

How to NYRB do it? That's 3 contracted players that they have got clubs to just let go.

Not sure about Marquez but Henry strikes me as the type of person who would go to a club willing to give him his last pay day but also a club that is at a fairly decent standard of football. There were rumours that a club in Dubai were willing to give Cahill a big money contract but he's not that type of guy. He loved the club and I'm sure a part of why he's leaving is because he thinks its time to move on for the clubs best interest as well. It would be great if we managed to sign him on a short term loan ala Donovan because although he might not give a footballing presence on the pitch, he will give a boost to the sides confidence and happiness.
